Malherbe: Finally a Springbok Tighthead that can tackle and do more than decent scrumming

A polished gem has been uncovered. Finally a Springbok Tighthead that can tackle and contribute outside the scrum.Hopefully he will be one of the centrally contracted Boks to keep the best talent in SA. 
Our scrum has been missing an international tighthead for some time. 
Jannie usually costs 5 points per game with missed tackles that block anyone else tackling .
The centrally managed contract system must be especially geared for younger players to retain the best talent in SA by higher salaries. 

Malherbe had a very good game. Would be wonderful if he is finally our answer to occupy the tighthead place. Now lets see how well he performs in the S15 next year.

The strong point of the Stormers - the only real one - was the scrumming of the Stormers last year with malherbe and Kitshoff being the props involved.  Koch played in the initial games of the Super series last year since Malherbe was injured.   He did very well last season  and will inevitably do well next season..  

Not so well against the Lions....and not so well at minute 73.20 against Bargie, when he was cracked onto his knees, very lucky not to be penalized. Malherbe got much weaker replacement loosehead opponents in the AB game and the Pumas game and did little with the oportunity . He scrummed without much effect against Jenkins in the Welsh game, a player who often gets put away.
He was good in general play against the Bargies, but he is a vulnerable scrummager. Okay when the pack is moving forward....but with his laid out position a liability when under pressure.

Check out that scrum for yourselves....nobody on here or the media will ever pin point it, runs against the story line.

 Does not matter Moz, Jannie is done. He should have been relegated long ago.

 Sure he is, he was hanging on to make the RWC. But I doubt Malherbe is the replacement , nor Coenie, nor Marcel, nor Koch.

 
Thomas Du Toit and Koch are our future props.

Throw Dreier into the mix with Trevor and we have a solid front row.

Marcell and Redlinghyuse are also solid tightheads we could draw nearer.

I can't think of a single South African tighthead that isn't vastly superior to Powder Puff Jannie.

It's hilarious to think that old moffie's been singing his praises all these years.

There never was a problem with Malherbe's scrumming.  Mozart in his praise-singing of Jannie du Plessis as his "national treasure" had to find a problem and in that he was just about lying in every case he invented.
The latest comment is hilarious:-
 "Okay when the pack is moving forward." 
So why Mozart - is the scrum moving forward?   That kind of BS statement is staggering.  There is always an excuse - when Malherbe does well - the excuse is that his opponents were weak.  When Jannie buggers up somebody else is to blame.   
But Jannie is gone and one will have to find out what Mozart will do next - all his favourites are goners from the Springbok team.   His bitterness against future players will have to be based on his fairy tales about how they compare with the failures he championed in the past three years.   


 

 Moz, with respect, Koch is still young and there are lots of tricks a TH must learn to really dominate. Koch's can be fixed with coaching.  IMO his problem is technical. We need 2 TH's who play alternately,  we don't want the scenario like with Beast and Jannie being played into the ground by both the Sharks and the Boks. Jannie should have been in his prime now, with a couple of years left on the tank. Like you observed earlier, your TH is your national treasure, not to be squandered.

I like what I see with Malherbe, disappointing that Kitshof's going abroad ........ especially sad when they're still so young .

Jannie is already 33 years of age - way past his prime.  Whether he was played into the ground or not is not the issue here - fact is he became a liability wirh defiucient scrumming and totally absent contribution outside of scrumming  over the last two years.
Motrivation for Jannie's selection for the WC was imaginary and that is a fact.  I would rather have taken the following props to the WC - they would have done better:-
