Mallett on the uncontested scrums

Well moz, Meyer said that the law stipulates that only players listed on the team sheet are allowed to play in those positions. That is the law and he or Schalk could do nothing.

With Sam Whitelock having been yellow-carded in the 59th minute, the Boks would have hoped to make their one-man advantage count at scrum time. Except they couldn't, as French referee Jérôme Garcès ruled uncontested scrums. It was a strange decision, as while the Boks had replaced tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis at the start of the second half with Vincent Koch, who later left the field because of a head gash, they still had Trevor Nyakane on the field, who can play both loosehead and tighthead. Nyakane was not a designated tighthead for this match – so Garcès was technically correct in his decision – but with six fit front-rowers on the field, common sense should have prevailed. Instead, the Boks lost the opportunity to dominate a seven-man All Blacks scrum. 

Borchardt makes it sound more like the rule is that a competent tighthead has to be available....rather than the coaching take that he has to be designated.  

Maybe he is wrong, but the inability to continue scrumming was very frustrating. Compounded by Strauss coming on it was a double whammy.
