The match is soon to begin and its is vital to put away these kiwis. I'm assuming they have managed to find some players willing to take the field!

So may the best team, the Stormers win, and may there be no ref deciding the game for once with biased calls.

Alistair of course has done us no favours with some of his selections but we will have to put that aside guys and do the job. In their face for 80 minutes is once more the rule.

At 70, 71, 73 rd minute there he is.... Far out this is getting beyond ridiculous you small minded kiwi and ur refs are going to make the whole competition obsolete because of ur cheating refs. What's the point in playing the game if ol kiwi ref gonna make sure the home team wins.... Absolutely pathetic and reality is I don't really care about the outcome of this game just wanted a fair competition anyway good on u cheats ruining it for all..... Say what u like this is beyond pathetic...

Prepare yourselves for a lot of blubbering, foot-stamping and high-pitched squealing.

The Hapless Stompies were anal-gaped by a New Zealand team in a game officiated by a New Zealand ref . . . this is not going to be a pretty sight.

Don't say you weren't warned!

Had to laugh at the bully Vermeulen trying to act the tough guy while standing over the Blues second smallest player . . . only to get pwned by the Blues smallest player. Vermeulen looked like he was about to burst into tears! Wehe!

Well done Blues!

Redsman I have not seen the game but hear we outscored them two tries to nil. All their points coming from penalties. I am sure that you are right and yet again the kiwi ref has done his job. Only solution is to ban nz refs?

Given the reward ou brycy got doubtless they know the routine. Bwahahahahhahahaha have they no shame? Then they bleat on about their fine record.  Hilarious

rooitwit you can take off your blues jersey now but please oak how about a little Go Sharks for appearances sake.

Redsman what can be done about these kiwi refs. If Oz and SA took they matter up with the IRB etc could things change?

What did Marshall say do you know? - you will usually get an attempt at a honest assessment from him.

Nope I am reacting  to Redsmans clear outrage at another kiwi ref debacle. Could it be true. Well given the history there is a high probability it is. As I said I will certainly watch the game.

Anything else rooitwit.

One has to be patient with ou roiitwit he never quite gets - not the sharpst pencil in the kiwi box.

Rooitwit I sense you are a bit bitter about something. I note you were absent from the board for some time after the Stormers pumped the guppies. Isnt it time you got over it. Always feel free to tell Uncle Beeno your problems!

Match summary ex Supersport

Chris Noakes kicked six penalty goals but it would have been the DHL Stormers who were kicking themselves after the Blues held on to win 18-17 in a tight, tense game on a damp field at North Harbour Stadium in Albany on Friday.

The Stormers built up strongly off the last move of the game as they desperately sought the score that would have won it for them in similar fashion to their great come-from-behind effort across the bridge at Eden Park in Auckland two years ago. Back then the Stormers fought back from 19-3 down to win with a late conversion kick from Dewaldt Duvenage.

This time it was Elton Jantjies who shaped up to be the hero after the ball had been set up on several occasions as the Stormers took the ball through phase after phase after the hooter had sounded. But when it came back to him in a good position to snap over a drop-goal, the Blues defence was storming down on him and in face of the pressure he fluffed the attempt.

Inevitably there will be disappointed fans who will have a go at Jantjies for that miss, but in truth it should never have been up to him. The Stormers dominated the first half in all the relevant statistics except the one that counted the most, the scoreboard. Every time the Blues went into Stormers territory they left with points, with Noakes kicking three penalties to the Stormers one to lead 9-3 at the break.(Congrats t othe ref h eclearl ywasnt missing anything Bwahahahhaha)

What that scoreline doesn’t tell you though is about the number of points that the Stormers left on the table in a crazy 15 minute period in the middle of the half. The first miss was a try-scoring opportunity that Joe Pietersen created with a blistering break in the 19th minute. He had Gio Aplon on his outside and the wing surged forward to a point where, with Pietersen unmarked on his inside and the tryline only a couple of metres away, it would have been a certain try.

Instead Aplon held onto it and he was caught by a good tackle from Rene Ranger. The chance to score was still on though, and Andries Bekker could have made up for the Aplon mistake had he passed just short of the line. Instead he went himself and was adjudged, after consultation with the TMO, to have fallen just millimetres short of the line.(Fair call - millimeters! Guess who inivetably got the rub of the green?)

At that stage it looked like the Stormers were starting to take control, but they trailed 6-0 to two early Noakes penalties, the second of them just three minutes before the try-scoring chance was wasted. Then five minutes later, trailing 6-3, the Stormers produced one of those brain explosions that occasionally trips up even the finest teams.

Clearly thinking they had the ascendancy on the field, which they did have, Jean de Villiers opted to set up a lineout drive rather than kick for goal and level the scores at 6-all. The Stormers were unlucky as one small slip stopped them from driving over for the try, which would have made any post-mortem comment about the decision irrelevant.

But the kick was from a position almost in front and would have been a certain three points, whereas the conversion rate of lineout drives, even if the Stormers are good at it, can’t be nearly as high a percentage of probability.

UNFORGIVABLE MISTAKE

The Stormers then did get a chance to kick one three minutes later from an easily kickable position for Pietersen, but he missed it. Perhaps that preyed on the Stormers’ minds, for they then opted to kick for a lineout with their next penalty, which was also just within range of Pietersen’s boot, and this time Pietersen missed touch.

He had also missed touch with a penalty early in the game, so it was not a good night for the fullback. Indeed, it was not a good night generally for the Stormers’ kicking game, which had been so good against the Hurricanes but was pretty woeful for the first part of the match in Albany.

An early second-half penalty from Noakes put the Blues 12-3 ahead in a game where for most of it they were second best, and that was a turning point as then the Stormers appeared to lose composure. Suddenly they started to knock on balls as frustration crept into their game, and they also lost their earlier authority in their first phase play.

The Blues, by contrast, were emboldened by their ability to get Noakes to tick the scoreboard over every time they got within range, and the Stormers suddenly started to give away a succession of penalties in addition to making mistakes (Aha the penaties suddenly they forgot how to play - we get it). They had done neither in the first half.

Sure enough, there was another penalty for Noakes to kick, and at 15-3 down , it looked like the Stormers were out of a game that they should really have been leading. That though was when the Stormers, perhaps releasing some of their own tension in thinking that the game might be gone, started to play, and a great angled run from Juan de Jongh put De Villiers in for the first try of the match.

The conversion made it 15-10 with 14 minutes to go, but the Stormers kept conceding penalties every time they were inside their own territory (Amazing ho they managed that eh!!!). A stupid scrum penalty gave Noakes the chance to make it an eight point lead from almost in front of the posts and the Stormers were let off when he pushed it wide, but then came what looked a refereeing error when the Stormers were blown at a breakdown.

The breakdown penalty was dubious in itself, but the play shouldn’t even have been in that area of the field as the assistant referee had adjudged that the ball had come off a Stormers player off a kick, when really it was Rene Ranger that it came off. It was quite clear on television, and was an unforgiveable mistake at a key moment of the game. It was from that lineout that the Blues played themselves into the territory where the penalty was awarded.(Shocking really but not unexpected)

This time Noakes kicked it and with the Blues leading by eight points with fewer minutes remaining, that should have been it. But the Stormers weren’t finished, and De Villiers, now playing as well as at any time in his career, took an outside gap and ran through poor Blues defence to score a great try. But by the time Pietersen had kicked the conversion there were only three minutes left.

The Stormers shouldn’t have been chasing the game though, and they only have themselves to blame. They were unfortunate in many senses, but this was also one they gave away.

Seems a day of lost chances and ref foul ups. The lost chances we take on the Chin. The ref blunders like the one mentioned we dont. Sometimes when a side is getting tiddled by a ref they try too hard nd become desparate. It appears quite clear the Stormers were the better side.

seeing as how i hit a nerve i will throw a dog a bone and tell u how deon fourie performed as i know u havent and probably wont watch it, :o)
but he was awesome, easily the best pilferer in the game, with a running game to boot. i would put him in my Bok team and have no probs with it, a real possibilty considering the latest bismarck report,

anyways, dont worry, im assuming u have been a life long stormers supporter, so u will be use to dissapointment, my hurricanes are in the same boat, but i guess NZ rugby especially the All Blacks is a nice concilation, but errrrrr, hey, what about that trevor noah, hes a pretty funny guy, so u can find solace in that, cos u wont find it in rugby.

Having just finished watching the game I have to thecome to the  conclusion that the Stormers were by sum way the better side. Appalling luck and then ref blunders handed game to undeserving Blues. Turning down pwnalties was also not on when youare in front of posts. Build your lead.

Duvenage was a flop with his kicking - is Groom being punished for the charge down against the Cheetahs?

I normally would  be more surprised than before about crustie rooitwit and the kiwi bird brains carrying on as they have but of course I am not.

Man it could have been such a comfortable win.

Was that touch judge Pollack by any chance - he sucks big time - the twit must be blind or a blatant cheat - neither possbility gives one any resassurance he should be reffing Super 15. Ban all kiw refs they are unworthy.

Stormers played a mixture of excellent rugby and some silly errors at crucial points. This could easily have been a five pointer. My how frustrating seeing this inferior blues team win by 1 lousy point when we shouldhave been 20 up with 4 tries!! Ugggggggh a five pointer was there for the taking

Hapless blues couldnt score a try dispite much noise about their backline. Sorry Hakwa they dont look championship material on what I saw tonight. For them the field had shrunk and  they were going nowhere apart from the ref giving them all the 50/50 calls.

At least one had the satisafaction of knowing that  the Stormers were the superiour side by some way.

Keep going guys its not over yet.

"crustie rooitwit"?

Baboon-ou, I know you're an extremely stupid person with a very short attention span but I'm not sure how someone even as thick as you would come to the conclusion that I'm a Crusaders fan. For some reason I like the North Island teams more than the South Island teams and the Crusaders are nowhere near my favourite Super Rugby team.

If it helps (and I'm pretty sure it won't, but anyway . . .) my ranking of the current Super Rugby teams in terms of personal favouritism goes something like this . . .

Sharks

. . . daylight . . .

Cheetahs

Kings

Bulls

Chiefs

Blues

Hurricanes

Crusaders

Highlanders

Reds

Force

Rebels

Brumbies

Waratahs

. . . daylight . . .

Stompies

There, I hope that clears up any confusion in that laughably feeble little brain of yours.

Edit: Meant to add, your weak-arsed team lost because they weren't good enough. It's really as simple as that.

Etzebeth was rusty....not surprising really. I thought Williams showed the value of experience, and had an excellent game. The technical preparation of the Blues pack was spot on....although I'm not sure about the pulling down of the catcher bit at the lineouts. To always be pulling down the catcher in the path of the maul, and time it precisely after he hits the deck and before he feeds the ball....seems to require Einstein like time increments. The nanosecond comes to mind.

Hasbeeno, I've had a word with the Blues and they totally agree that the Mild Zephyrs were far the better team and have therefore forsaken the 4 points and awarded them to the Zephyrs. That gives you 5 in total so should make you happy.

As a South African man who lives in Albany and supports only the Sharks, I think last nights game had all the substance needed to make it a cracker. Sure I like the SA teams to do well but I also realise that a Stormers loss would be better for the Sharks so I was really on the fence with this one.

As just a supporter of rugby in this case, my view of the game is totally unbiased. I was hosted in a box just to the right of the half way line as we would see the field and and basically have neck cramp now as my head was locked to the right. First half, it was all the Stormers, second half, all territory went to Blues. Now my issue with that is how can the Blues continuously snuff out Stormers attack by turning the ball over and its play on yet everytime the Stormers turned the Blues ball over it was deemed illegal and we were watching Chris Noakes line up a kick at goal? Surely this reeks of inconsistency. I am not saying Jackson had a bad game but definately not consistent there.

Anyone watching who thought the Blues were the better side on the park are either kiwi supporters or fooling themselves. Gio Aplon fucked a try up by simply not flicking the ball off to Joe Pietersen. Then they passed up on kickable penalties. Look, thats not the Blues fault, the Stormers fucked up on both those occasions.

Blues attack didnt look like crossing the Stormers line with exception to a lineout where Parsons almost went over unopposed. Blues put through a lot of little grubber kicks and they had clearly identified this as the way to pin the stormers back and possibly force a mistake from the fullback and pounce on that because they didnt back themselves to carry the ball through the line.

Stormers attack through the backs was superior on the night (surprising but true) and one has to ask, why did they continue kicking when the Blues backs looked out of sorts once the Stormers had earned the right to go wide??

Joe Pietersen is to skraal (skinny) and he has been pre programmed to kick!!

JDV showed last night why he is still one of the best players in the world and thats why on a previous post, I mentioned him for the SANZAR Warriors team at 12 ;-)

I believe they should select 3 of the top refs from each country and only they officiate these games. No SA ref may be involved in a game involving and SA team and so on!! Glen Jackson was totally poor last year in New Plymouth when the Sharks were hammered by the Hurricanes. This was a team that went on to make the finals and Jackson made them look like shit!

Not to say he cheated last night but I have not liked that prick since the Sharks Canes game. I cant see how a team so hot on attack leaves the field with only 3 points after that much territory and possession.

Good on the Blues for the win. They helped my boys out but they definately were not the better side.

Polyboy, I dont see how you can use the word "mauled" with a 1 point victory that included no try to the home team but two against with a further 2 (at least) fluffed opportunities.

If anything, Blues were mauled. I just wana ask Glen Jackson how is it that Stormers dominated 1st half but were not awarded penalties. Shoe was on the other foot in the second and Blues kept being awarded penalties. Surely consistency must be questioned there.

Dont mistake this for me saying Glen cheated. I am not saying that but was he consistent in his interpretations? To dispell any more of these rumours and shady games, we should go back to neutral refs. Hell even better, use only northern hemisphere refs!

Hakwa, at every turn over, a pedantic ref can blow a penalty for some reason. If you close close enough, you can ping a number of players for doing something "you" deem is illegal if you are the ref.

With the laws open to interpretation by the referee and rugby matches not being reffed by robots, we will always see this big difference. All we can ask for from any ref, especially pedantic ones (and Kaplan is included here), is consistency! Surely all those times the Blues turned the Stormers ball over on the deck was not 100% legal and if so, how come the many times the Stormers did the same thing it was deemed illegal? My point is a ref can always find a fault but he definately looked a lot harder for the Stormers faults than the Blues.

A ref can interpret the laws anyway they want. He can let the one team get away with a lot more, little things like slowing the ball down longer before penalising and shit like that. Allowing one team to fight for position for a few seconds longer than the other. Just liitle things like that and thats what I think was happening. I have no problem with a guy like Chris Pollock. He reffed the Sharks against Chiefs and we lost. No fault of his but Glen Jackson is a shit ref and I think he is the closest thing to Bryce Lawrence there is going!

Exactly so Boklogic, the problem breaks down into two parts. The laws that allow bent refs to subtley blow one side out of the game and refs themselves being bent. Kiwi refs dont even bother at times about subtlety. There is little consistency.

IRB have to institute vigourous monitoring of refs and ensure those who are not up for the job are weeded out.

50/50 calls especially should be monitored for bias. What we are seeing isnt good enough.

Like I have mentioned in the past, it is ironic that Saffers are complaining about ref's when they invented the "bent" ref concept, The AB's were always up against the opposing team AND the ref in test in SA pre isolation...do you guys remember that or is it all selective memory lapses for you guys. Boklogic mauling was a poor selective choice of wording...but come on take the loss and move on, the rugby world is not against or are conspiring to bring down the SA teams, crap just happens some win some lose.
