Another game where he thought he was a No.10 and his numerous mistakes at the breakdowns allowed the All Blacks to keep their noses ahead.

Proved why his name showed be inked onto the team sheet as he was simply amazing at scrum time to help his team gain the upperhand.

His work rate was once again of the highest standard and his bulldog approach was great to watch. However, he forgot about executing the basic fundamentals of a hooker.

When a scrum has a strong right shoulder, it will flatten any challengers and that is what the Beast gave his side - scrum dominance.

Had a huge task to sort things out at line-out time and did that admirably, however, he could not make a real impact off the bench this time.

Has big shoes to fill at scrum time and did just that but that was all he was able to do.

15 Willie Le Roux 6/10 Excellent first half, in which his first two touches were to put each of his centres away. Some great takes too. But he faded in the second half with the rest of the team.

14 JP Pietersen 5/10 Not much of an opportunity to shine. Safe under the high ball in the first half. Thought he was away for an intercept, but play was called back. Not a lot of fun in this weather for a winger.

13 Jesse Kriel 4/10 One break early on suggested this might be his game. It was the last we saw of it. The rest of the game rather passed him by. Certainly not the last we’ll see of his international career though.

12 Damian De Allende 7/10 Vied with Pollard as South Africa’s best back. He’s going to be a star - hard in defence and a bristling threat in attack. These two centres may one day match the careers of those opposite.

11 Bryan Habana 5/10 In the first half he was looking a million dollars, dominating his opposite man in the air. Undid it all with indiscipline in the second, culminating in a yellow for a cynical infringement.

10 Handre Pollard 7/10 Had a wonderful battle with the man opposite him. Did not miss a kick at goal, some achievement in the conditions, and looked good with ball in hand, which was likewise impressive.

9 Fourie Du Preez (capt) 5/10 You know he is key to this Springbok side but this was a relatively poor game by his standards. His kicking from the base was strangely off, as was some decision making.

1 Tendai Mtawarira 7/10 Big game from the Beast. Do not think he touched the ball (no cries of “Beeeast” were heard), but was a rock in defence and dominated at scrum time, which looked his side’s best hope.

2 Bismarck du Plessis 6/10 Solid at the set piece, which was always likely to prove South Africa’s way into the game, particularly in this weather. Made some big interventions in defence too.

3 Frans Malherbe 6/10 Weighed in with some big hits in the first half and was part of a dominant scrum. Has earned his spot during this World Cup fair and square. Did start to fade in second half, though.

4 Eben Eztebeth 7/10 He and his partner are a pairing for the ages. Had not featured as a target at the lineout this tournament, but certainly did in this match. One superb tackle on Milner-Skudder saved a try. Dull penalty, though, proved costly.

5 Lood de Jager 7/10 Big target in the lineout but it is his work around the field that really marks him out. He made some big tackles, held up his opposite number and carried hard. What a career awaits.

6 Francois Louw 7/10 He was a terror at the breakdown and rock hard in defence, particularly in the first half, when South Africa looked the likelier winners. The Boks’ answer to McCaw.

7 Schalk Burger 6/10 Huge involvement, although he has been criticised of late for appearing too much in midfield. Huge hits, too, but he spilled the ball to pave the way for Beauden Barrett’s try.

8 Duane Vermeulen 6/10 Not quite the heights reached last week but still a fine showing. Some key tidying at the base of a scrum in the second half was in vain and one tackle on Ma’a Nonu particularly stood out.
