If JJ, Kriel, DA, Lood, Serf, PSDT, Malherbe or Lambie had committed that Matfield offence and lost us the game, what would you be saying right now.
But I am not going to blame Vic as it's a team game and games are not lost by individuals

If you are referring to the penalty, I thought it was an aggressive but legal clean out. If you are referring to the lost ball near the line....it was going to happen we were presenting turnover ball at every carry, we needed to get it wider to have a chance.

No I am referring to his grabbing the player around the neck and having the penalty reversed.....one that had 3 points written all over it in front of the poles.....with few minutes left in the game.
But I am not going to blame him for our loss......but I know that had that been DA for instance you would.
These things happen in this beautiful game.....individual players should never be blamed

Very big, but I'm not convinced it was a penalty.

Any grab around the neck is a penalty

Sure rugby is a team sport with 15 individual players contributing to the team.
Now please tell me what contribution "Greybeard" made to the team.
!. Had a penalty reversed.2. Called himself at a line-out and lost.3. Spilled the ball in his own 22.
Thank goodness he did not start the game.
Sure the better team won........but with players like him in the team the other team will at most times be better.
Yes I will say that his contribution resulted in the Ab's win because after the penalty reversal and losing 40m as a result of the reversal penalty kick the Boks were flat the rest of the game.

Thanks a ton old man.

It wasn't a grab around the neck....I have looked at it again slow motion. The AB players had his head down over the ball Matfield puts his head on the players back and his arms around his chest and lifts him up. It's nothing like the Moody incident where he had his arms locked around the players neck and pulled him by the neck.
You can see that type of action all the time in rugby...for example Pollard at minute 38 does exactly that before the Keino yellow.
It was an equalization call. And there were 15 minutes left in the game with the Lambie penalty still to come.
This is a silly analogy Dave...nothing like JJ or Allende losing the test in the last move.

Minute 17.09 just scanning, Franks does the same thing to Pollard. When the player is down over the ball any attempt to lift him has that effect.  It was a very marginal call and I think an equalizer called by Aboob in the box. Garc es by contrast did a fine job.

He brought down SBW in full flight twice, when the Boks were struggling to contain him. Not Matfield's finest hour but the only thing that disappointed me was the lost lineout.

Disagree Moz he goes in around his neck and rolls him letting go of the neck....what makes it particularly stupid on Matfield s behalf is the fact that the ref had had his arm up for our penalty for some time before Matfield stupidly tried to clear Read in that fashion.
3 points thrown away by stupidity.
I'm not comparing it to a specific incident by the likes of Lood and co....I am just stating that had Lood done what Vic did your headline would have been that Lood lost us the semi there and then.

Add to that Habanas early sprint on Dan and another two points went down the drain.matfield was a disaster waiting to happen and it did. If only Step had been our substitute we would be in the final.

Hope Moz ana lyses incidents where the abs infringed but the malignant George Ayoub of Oz made no mention of it to the ref. Commentators mentioned Schalk being grabbed around the kneck and no penalty being given and there were other incidents where good old George kept silent becasue the incident would have been unfavourable to the wee abs.
Thought the ref himself tried to be fair. Nice to see the wee abs getting pinged for things they would never get pinged for with an Oz ref. Ref better than expected given his history when reffing our games.

The relief is that its goodbye victor. A decade of fielding a tight four has ended. We now have a young lock combo that if not already are, will definitely be the worlds best in future barring injury.

Bottom line is that Matfield cost the Goats a shot at winning the match. If he hadn't transgressed the law the Goats may very well be contesting the final next weekend.

The same as Morne Steyn cost the Goats the match against the Wallabies.

Matches are indeed lost by individuals as we saw yesterday.

Either way ... the Goats were never going to beat the All Blacks. They're just not good enough as a side to have managed that.

How would it look if the

Matfield had hold of the neck in the tackle.
One of the other posters with the software may pull it up for you but you should check it yourself. The time stamp is 62.44.

Aside of the incidents mentioned - Matfield did his oprdinary against New Zealand - he also was outjumped in a line out by Whitelock.
Even i there was an excuse for one of the incidents the rest are all red marks against Matfield,   Sad to say - I did say if he came on in the match we would lose the game because of him.  Even though you would not recognise it - the match was lost because of two players -
*  namely a ball loss by Burger that caused a try be scored by the AB's; and*  Matfield's negative contributions to the team effort - especially turning around a kickable penalty is lunacy.
I think it is time to admit that the time has gone for the old-timers and that their contributions to the present SA rugby scenario has been a huge negative.   There contribution to the present tournament was unfortunate and should have been foreseen by Meyer.
The time has come that we look at the future of rugby in SA and it could only mean an improvement in our rugby.  However, the game plan to be used and the need for allowing greater scope to players to be inventive is really of major importance as well.

Lood didn't do us any favours either as the supposed next best thing at 5.

He was poor in the tight loose and his primary function in the line out showed him up as a second rate flash in the pan. He loses the plot against better opposition.

Just not test material.

mike just to add the whole rugby adminstration from club level to union bok level needs to sit down and discuss the path forward on how we want to play the game from bottom to the top.
only when we have consensus on that then we can go ahead to develop our players ext to filter through the system to the national side. we have a crisis of styles and every coach thinking his way is the best way even though skills wise our coaches are amongst the worst in the world. apart from 5 or 6 coaches we are barren in the coaching department.
saru needs to also step in and ban international players from wearing the bok jersey and that would also aid our unions to hold onto players more as the bok jersey is more worth than money...its only proper to reward local players with contracts than trying to play to the tune of players leaving our shores.
to fix our pattern of play is a collective effort and we need everyone's buyin to repurpose our systems.
we have the talent but we need to work on collectivising the game patterns and skills development systems to aid at the end of the day the national side

Mozzies recording failed to record around the 62 minute mark and started recording at 63 minutes again.
Talking about being blind to the fact.

All nonsense. I saw at least 6 similar clean outs in the Bargie game....none penalized. Aboob doing his thing.
