memorable rugby moments....


1) Watching Habana screaming down the far side in a game between the 'Tahs and the Bulls at the SFS......his foot speed was amazing.


2) The try he scored in the CC final Bulls versus the Sharks.


3) Richard Bands a prop forward on his way to the tryline fending off Carlos Spencer in the process.

 

4) Stormers loosie(forget his name but I remember the tackle) who flattened Carlos in the mother of all tackles... Carlos never did recover from it.


5) George Gregan flying through the air in making the tackle of the decade on Jeff Wilson just as he was about to cross the tryline.


6) The Larkham drop goal...yes THAT one...like many Bok fans I was shattered and bitter for a very long time.


7) Lomu in full flight....there has never been a more awesome sight.

 

8) Lomu again, this time swatting and trampling the POMS on his way to the tryline.


9) 2007 WC final: Jake White walking Twickers after the win ....I swear I saw tears in his eyes.


10) Saved my best for last....1995 WC final...Francios Pienaar instinctively on his knees with his team mates thanking the man above for a miraculous win. Even if you're not a religious person you'd still have to respect the humility of Pienaar and the Bokke.


Those are my memorable moments which is not necessarily everyone else's, feel free to share yours.

Pretty good choices. I have to add Richard Bands flattening McCaw leaving him falling like a tree with his arms out like a zombie. Hard to think of anything else to beat your list.

Nice thread Denny!

1) Robbie Flek getting tackled by, I think it was Deon Keyser, while jogging to score a "certain" try2) Lambie's kick for victory last year against AB's at Ellis Park, because I was at the game! Clapped so hard my hands hurt! 3) Danie Rossouw's try saving tackle on Mark Cueto in the 2007 RWC final.4) Johnny Wilkinson's drop goal - you know the one! 5) Habana crying during the Anthem 2007 RWC6) Jaques Fourie's try against the British and Irish Lions, think that landed up being the international try of the year. 7) Jannes Labuschagnes late tackle on Wilkinson. Red card, that cost us the test and a massive hiding! 8) France beating the AB's in the 99 world cup semi-final.9) Springbok defence in the soaking rain in the '95 world cup against France. First time I ever remember people sweeping the field! 10) Not rugby, but my most memorable sporting moment ever! Alan Donald run out against OZ in the cricket world cup semi's! I can still feel that pain!!

Or how about the last-minute 50m penalty Pat Lambie kicked to end the All Blacks 22 match winning streak last year?

Thanks Draad.....that's him, Hendrik Gerber. I remember Spencer walking up to him and the Stormers and mouthing off afterwards which was just a tell tale sign that he was hurting bigtime.


Nice memories Bluebok...not sure about the Donald run out, perhaps we should make up a cricket best memories. ...about the Keyser tackle, there'd still be some egg on Flecks face to this day!

That about sums up Lambie, a Currie Cup. Yes the one where the Shark's pack walked all over the Province. Besides, no Tin Cup makes my list. Not by a long, long way!

As per the New Zealand test? Well, that's a matter of opinion. It does not make my all time greatest moments. And when I do think of that test, I think of Pollard, not Lambie - who missed an easy drop kick bang in front of the posts minutes before hitting that penalty. But I'm not so arrogant, conceited, bitter and sour as to judge others on what they do and do not consider a landmark rugby moment to them. I'll leave that to you.

Hennie van Zyl scoring against the All Blacks at Ellis Park in 1960, after Antelme came in from the opposite wing to create the overlap....my first test at 13 years old and a truly memorable one.

 Some other memorable tests:

(46) South Africa v New Zealand (40)
The 2000 Tri-Nations Ellis Park test between the two. What was remarkable was that we were in very dark waters at this point and nobody gave us a chance of doing anything. This test left a lasting impression on many All Blacks to this day.

(26) South Africa v Australia (22)
2003 Tri Nations. This was another test where the Boks were seen as easy beats but we smothered Australia and broke them. It was another fantastic demonstration of the Boks with their backs to the wall and prevailing.

(40) South Africa v New Zealand (26)
Another Ellis Park classic, 2004. This was perfect revenge of years of being beaten by New Zealand. We finally broke that duck and in spectacular fashion and went on to win the Tri Nations that year. Monty gave up 20 points with the boot that day, so the scoreline flattered New Zealand.

(22) South Africa v New Zealand (16)
New Zealand's first test after utterly demolishing the British Lions in record fashion, 2005. It was a brutal test and New Zealand, at the very peak of their powers at that time, were pounded.

(31) South Africa v New Zealand (19)
2009, the year we routed the All Blacks for the first time since 1998, but in three tests! Morné had a day to remember scoring all 31 points.

(28) New Zealand v South Africa (30)
2008, Carisbrook, New Zealand. We had the edge over New Zealand in this game, returning to our true style of play. However it appeared that this was to be another of those close tests that slipped through our fingers. But a moment of pure magic from Januarie sealed the deal. And that charge down of Carter's drop followed by Frans carrying four All Blacks past halfway and out of range were some of the best moments of Bok rugby.

New Zealand have bee the greatest beneficiaries of bent reffing in world rugby. They got a World Cup out of it; the rightful World Champions being France. That was the last straw for me. The game of rugby is no more credible than WWF.

@Denny: The whole 2011 WC was a farce, there at least 5 rigged tests. The Ireland v Aussie test was another of the big ones. I can't say what the Boks would have done in the final, though I believe we were one of the two best teams in the tournament, but the French were for a fact robbed. That New Zealand fans can gloat after loking like helpless babies floundering in a home final is a true reflection of how egotistical they are. That unbeaten run was an even bigger farce. Watching Ireland have the greatest moment in their rugby history stolen before my eyes was sickening. And don't get me started on McChump, boasting after the WC Final that they would have beaten France by 30+ points in a fair game. This is clearly not the same New Zealand I grew to respect as a youngster. There is no aura, just a stench of corruption.

But back to the topic, here are some more memorable tests for me:

(36) Wales v South Africa (38)
2004, Cardiff. This is to date my favourite encounter between the two. There were some fabulous tries scored by both sides in what was a scintillating contest. Here's a link to the best try of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIkrrJGxK3U

(14) England v South Africa (25)
2006, Twickenham test 2. Pretorius made amends for botching the first test with 4 drop goals , almost equaling the world record set by Jannie De Beer. It was a crucial win that broke England's longstanding stranglehold on Bok rugby.

(6) England v South Africa (42)
2008, Twickenham. This was a very strange test, almost as strange as the 2006 loss to Australia, or Australia's record loss to us in the mid 90s. They were actually very competitive and threatened to score throughout the test, but we simply refused to cave in and hit them hard every time. It was another display of Bok power and resilience.

(61) South Africa v Australia (22)
1997, Loftus. This was that strange test mentioned previously. Again, very competitive on the field, but we finished off everything. Still Australia's biggest defeat, almost eclipsed by their second, which was also against us in 2008! Australia held the lead at half-time 13-15, but an 8 try blitz and 43 points in the second half utterly blew them away. That against a star studded Wallaby side.

 Ummm, can't get more corrupt than the Bok refs prior to isolation Lestat. It's the only way to explain away the Boks pathetic record against the ABs in the last 23 years and "puleeeease"don't try and bring up that old chestnut "central contracting"!!Highlights for me:

moolaa, how old are you? You sound like a spiteful teenager! Don't you get it? So many of the moments mentioned above by the SA posters are wins against the AB's, and that is because beating the AB's is the ultimate achievement in rugby. It is a massive sign of respect for the All Blacks! How do you take it? By being spiteful and petty. 
Just to illustrate, not one poster here has brought up the French forward pass, and it was forward, that knocked NZ out of the 2007 world cup. You see, that is a childish and spiteful memory, and even though every one of us here thought about it, not one mentioned it.

Moolaa is correct about the SA "hometown" refs in the 60s and 70s. A lot of South Africans are not aware of the overseas perception that our pre-isolation refs were cheats.

In New Zealand, the likes of Gert Bezuidenhout and Piet Robbertse are held in the same kind of esteem that South Africans hold Bryce Lawrence . . . and British Lions followers will remind us of Max Baise's bias in 1968 and 1974.

Rooi, that was before my time, but I'll take your word for it regarding the two ref's. However, bringing them up was done purely to be spiteful, and if their corrupt officiating is one of moolas most memorable rugby moments, then he is an incredibly sad individual.  
I get that he is just trying to get a rise out of people....fark it, he's not worth the effort.

 Moola.....going back to the RWC situation, you should jolly well know that it was the advice of the touch judge to Wayne Barnes that ruled the pass valid. Care to tell me who the touch judge was ? Also, I have read many times how independent analysis of that match has concluded your beloved NZ actually infringed twice as often as France and got away with it. There was no bias, you just lost. What happened thereafter was disgusting and sanctions against Henry and McCaw for their comments should have been brought.

 Becs, did I say that pass was forward? Read what I said.What was disgusting is that the Frogs somehow didn't concede a penalty in the last 60 minutes of that game! So by your submission that the ABs infringed twice as many times as the Frogs, then surely Barnes should have awarded the ABs at least a couple of penalties in the last 75% of the game?? Just saying.....
