I'm not of the school that thinks JdV will be back for the RWC. His knee injury was so catastrophic at a very late stage of his career, we need to accept our best centre since readmission is gone. So who is going to play 13 at the RWC?

Looking at yesterday's two games we had most of the 13 candidates playing bar the fragile Jordaan. And one has to conclude the best candidate for 13 is de Allende.....the only trouble being he is also the best 12 candidate by a proverbial mile.

Mapoe and Sadie are two decent journeymen centres. Both scored good tries, both were also exploited in opposition tries.  Of the two Mapoe seems to have a bit more chutzpah, but his bag of tricks is not that impressive. S adie seems well rounded without any real spark.

In the other game de Jongh was matched up against JJ. But both of them were pretty much bit players. De Jongh made a nice break early and pulled off a great forcing tackle on Kriel. JJ was a competent link in the Basson try with his pace. But neither had a really convincing game.

Then there is the question of Kriel, perhaps the most mentioned candidate for 13....was there anything we could see that convinces that he is the man for the job? Not really. He did everything well except for two turnovers, without really imposing himself.

As we saw with de Allende last year there is a lot to learn about top level centre play, it could already be too late for Kriel to shift to 13 and fully prepare for the RWC. The prospects of de Allende being the only viable choice at 13 are increasing by the week.

If you're going to have De Allende at 13 who are you going to have at 12? Serfontein?

You forget Odendaal and Vorster. Sadie is a classy player.
There is no problem at 13 unless it is created by foolishness.

HasBeen you are becoming more like Dave every week....Vorster  and Odendaal have had a few decent games in open S15 competition. The WC is a whole different level. We have a problem at 13 believe me.
I don't know who I would choose at this stage Shezza, but 13 is a harder slot to fill.

So we have the possibility of playing Allende at 13, kriel, Mapoe, Saidie, Vorster and Odendaal. All we need to actually do is make some decisions now and get the franchises to tow the line. I think both Odendaal and Vorster will make very good 13s.Big fast and with steps etc.Its like the prop situation . Beast and Jannie played to death and getting on but no decent succession planning. Also its like playing the soon to be 38 year old matfiled who is way past it.
No we make many of our problems although there are significant ones foisted on us.OZ played Bieber when he was a teen etc etc.I am off to play tennis.

Yep well we thought that about JJ and Taute as well. I think Vorster and Odendaal are better bets, but they are trying to establish themselves at 12 in the S15... And we are to believe they are ready for the WC at 13? Sorry I'm not convinced.
Enjoy your tennis.

Thanks Moz, I did enjoy t he tennis. Took 2 hours to complete one set which went to a tiebreak which I lost!. Need to start earlier as it was getting dark when we stopped. Winter is on its way alas!
We have not had as much center talent for a while. Allende and Jean, Jan and Odendaal, Vorster and Mapoe. JP, Jordaan, Esterhuizen.

Beeno: Surely it was the ref's fault?

Of the 13's playing Mapoe has been our best, followed by Sadie.

Would I select one of them as our Bok 13 - NO

We have to move one of our in form 12's to 13 or play Jessie Kriel at 13, where he has played often enough.

Any of de Allende, Odendaal or Vorster could play 13.

I have also always advocated that Kobus v/Wyk should be playing 13.

Its a pity we have not had the opportunity to see youngsters like Pat Howard and Tyler Fisher at 13.

Personally......I would play Serf at 12, de Allende at 13, with Kriel on the wing and Wilie at 15

Personally I wouldn't play Stepfontein for the Bools let alone the Boks.

Serf is the best young 12 in the game......he walks my Bok side at 12 with his eyes closed

How can he be the best young 12 in the game when he was totally dominated by de Allende earlier this year. This is delusional stuff Dave....he isn't fast, he isn't elusive....he isn't strong.

For him this injury break is fortuitous...it preserves the fading myth.

He was not dominated by de Allende at all......Jan has proved himself at test level already, de Allende has not come close...therein lies the difference.

He is not fast, he does not need to be at 12......no slower than Jean.......he is elusive, has a great attacking skillset and is very strong.

He is so going to rub your nose in it in the years to come and I will keep reminding you

I very much doubt it.....Step has done nothing in tests so far, and is destined to be replaced. A junior talent who has not progressed.

He was one of our best test backs last year despite playing out of position at 13......has achieved more than Jean did at the same age and will be better than Jean as he has better attacking skills than Jean had.

Place holder for who given he played alongside Jean

Given Meyer's high praise of Jan last year......I think you might just have that one wrong as you do most.

Jan will be entrenched in the Bok side for years
