This article from News 24:
"Some of us are instinctively, resolutely optimistic about Springbok rugby, even when times are tough.   But the glass-half-full brigade may reluctantly close the gap on the apocalypse crew, alas, by finding it hard to muster genuinely chipper thoughts about the likelihood of South Africa swiftly avenging in Buenos Aires on Saturday (21:40 SA time) their first-time loss to Argentina at Kings Park last weekend.

In short, Wednesday’s greatly shaken-up Bok team revealed by coach Heyneke Meyer does dangerously little to inspire pre-match confidence.   To put it politely, it looks experimental - and in many cases glaringly short of a gallop - and will do extremely well to find the necessary cohesion after the long-haul trek at pretty short notice to see off a Pumas outfit presumably revelling right now in their triumphant homecoming and weighing up another famous kill.

The big question, I reckon, is: has Meyer been given (or given himself) the licence to risk another Test reverse - it would be an unpalatable fifth on the trot if it occurred - with a view to the bigger picture of the World Cup next month?

Because if win-at-all-costs is the motto being spread through the Bok camp for this one, the troops assembled (including as many as eight alterations to the starting mix) may labour to find the necessary synergy to complete the stiff requirement.

There is a hint of overkill, and a similar peppering of panic ... and these, in fairness to the suddenly hard-pressed Meyer, have not previously been hallmarks of his patiently and often very rationally-assembled Bok template since 2012.   Or is he quite prepared for the possibility of taking another more immediate torpedo to the hull, in order to cocoon one last time a great many of his firmly-in-mind personnel for the assault on RWC 2015?

The shaking of the bag for Saturday is so extreme that it is hard to know where to begin for analysis purposes.    Maybe the front row, so often the area where Argentina brutally focus their attack, best sums up the extremity of Meyer’s reaction in selection terms to the 12-point Durban humbling.

Simply put, it is “all change, please” as the entire Bok trio is restructured in the quest to stave off a second turbulent day at the scrummaging office in a week.   Meyer is not too wide of the mark in saying that reserve props Trevor Nyakane and Marcel van der Merwe “finished strongly” in Durban (to justify their starts for a stern examination in Buenos Aires) although by then Argentina had basically completed their destruction job at the set-piece and assassin-in-chief Marcos Ayerza long been pulled off for a well-earned rest.

Still, Nyakane is especially deserving of only a second appearance in the run-on side after amassing 14 caps as a substitute: the loosehead coped quite well with that legend of the No 3 trade, Martin Castrogiovanni, in his maiden start for the Boks in Padova last year.

He is part of a significantly more representative-looking Bok XV this weekend, which won’t surprise too many observers after a fresh political hoo-ha earlier this week.

Whether this was a conscious step or not, it probably still won’t placate some critics who will lament the complete absence from the match-day 23 this week of Siya Kolisi, who did everything that could have been expected of him in 17 minutes off the bench at Kings Park, but finds himself no more than a nominal “additional tour squad member” for the Argentina trip.

Naturally the return from a relative wilderness of Irish-based Zane Kirchner to the last line of defence – his last of 29 caps was as deputy fullback against Scotland at Port Elizabeth 14 months ago - will ruffle plenty of feathers.

Regardless of reports that he has been playing solidly for Leinster, he just seems too glaringly like a “fallback” considering the known limits to his skills set ... and anyway, he will do wonderfully well to switch on to immediate needs after a significant exile from the green-and-gold cause.

I haven’t personally discounted the possibility of a good World Cup by the Boks, and I’m also not yet among the hysterical prophets of doom over Meyer’s suitability - and some reports this week suggest we’ve still got him until 2019 - to the head coaching job.

Right now, it’s this Saturday that worries me more.

An Argentinean friend is among those whose company I will be keeping for the game on Saturday night. I fear it is the cork on a Malbec that may be triumphantly popped at the final whistle.

Again ...

This sums up the situation 100% and put to the sword all the hullabaloo of our two resident comedians.   There is no reason to be confident  as summed up in the following extract:-

"In short, Wednesday’s greatly shaken-up Bok team revealed by coach Heyneke Meyer does dangerously little to inspire pre-match confidence.   To put it politely, it looks experimental - and in many cases glaringly short of a gallop - and will do extremely well to find the necessary cohesion after the long-haul trek at pretty short notice to see off a Pumas outfit presumably revelling right now in their triumphant homecoming and weighing up another famous kill."

Kirchner has a greater skill set than Lambie! Had a very good run of form under Meyer from 2012 to 2013. The difference between him and Willie is that Kirchner is a more physical runner, and likes to come into the line more directly. He has a penchant for creating assists, but he is not going to your first receiver type pulling the strings. This will put much more pressure on Damian because now the onus for creating space falls on his shoulders. I'm not an Mvovo fan but he does again offer more physicality. I think the backline is vastly superior overall to last weeks team, but the 10-12 axis is very, very vulnerable. A 10 and a 12 that cannot land one effective tackle is looking for trouble. Will Lambie distribute? Will Damian get over the gainline? It could make matters worse seeing that Lambie is not very good at managing his depth or alignment, this will put even greater pressure on Damian. The forwards look good, and I look forward to seeing what the front row can do. But in the end I hope Argentina expose the 10-12 axis so Meyer can drop this nonsense for good. The Lambie delusion must end now. The delusion that Damian can create and handle physicality must end now as well.

I don't agree with all HMs selections, but I sympathize with the challenges he faces. He drops the very marginal Hendricks for Kriel, to make way for JDV and it's called a racist decision by PdV.

It's a disgrace. Almost nobody who knows the game would have argued against this change. But the prior Springbok coach attacks his successor on such flimsy grounds. One wouldn't be surprised if he played a role in the Cosatu debacle.

Let's be honest, no player is being left out of the Bok team for racist reasons. The coach may not rate a particular player of colour, but that's not because he is a player of colour.Perhaps this happens at lower levels it's hard to know. But this accusation is being level levelled at the Springboks and it's baseless.

HM may not be the best coach in the world. I rate Jake much more highly. But the rubbish being directed at this fundamentally sound man should make real rugby fans rally around. The Springbok coaching job is a poisoned chalice and it's not helping our rugby.

 Herr Goebbels
It has the potential for a lot of egg alright.  Meyer made some wild claims you supported - but never gets to correct what was the problem the previous weekend, namely the under-performance of the forwards.  He in fact added to the problem by selecting -
*   Matfield as a lock; and *   Alberts as a loosie
Matfield will solve one problem you imagined last week as happening.  He will call virtually all line-uts to go to everybody bar himself.  So Etzebeth will get some more line calls, but the type of calls leading to the score of De Jager will not happen - because Matfield is too weak a ball carrier to make such an attack possible.   They nay pass the ball to Alberts - but he is even worse in ball carries than Matfield is.
The problems encountered in ball protection and recovery will also be worse - because Alberts is notoriously incapable to do it and since he is not match-fit will add to that problem as well.  Brussow was neutralized last week in that aspect of the game as well.   Flippie was a flop when he replaced De Jager in the Aussie test - so that is adding to the problem as well.
I think Meyer is hoping that the combination of Matfield, Van der Merwe and Alberts will produce something positive, but they have flopped in the recent times and all three have flopped this year in whatever level of rugby he played in.
The other comic selection Meyer made was to pick Kirchner at full back.  The latter was basically used by Leinster on the wing - since hi full back performance was defective.   Like Morne Steyn at Stade Francais being only used at flyhalf when Plisson was  not available - Kirchner was too defective at full back to qualify to play in that position.
This team is so poorly constructed that whomsoever made an impact in the tests against the Aussies and the AB's will be neutralized in the upcoming game.   The situation last week in losing balls in scrumming will be worse this week and the real useless ones will be exonerated and instead of blaming the really poor links - the blame will obviously go to the wrong  players,  Last week our resident comedians blamed De Jager for the poor show of the props and other forwards and  De Allende for the flops of Pienaar and even De Villiers and Kriel.
I am expecting the normal praise-singing of the useless Alberts and Matfield will be endless and I am going to note what those two actually contribute and will remind the praise-singers of what really happened.    If they in fact outlasts 30 minutes on the field of play I would be amazed.

What will stand the Boks in good staed will be one would think a determination to win.Against this is the travel. As to the team itself:Front row. If the illegal scrumming continues expect a similar result. Locks have been severely weakened by the inclusion of the non  entity wee matfiled 105 kg and 38 year old NEVER has been.
The under perfroming Brussouw is retained whilst the serial loafer Alberts is included. All one can hope for is much improived performances from these two.
The pedestrain Pienaar is retained!!!  There isa step down from Pollard to Lambie. Allende and Kriel resume thier fledgling partnership. This is good news as to date they have been the best centre combo in the RC. Arguably the best in the world.Kirchiner comes in for Willie another big step down.
Can the Boks win. Ofd course they can but Meyers silly selections have certainly not helped.
The dropping of Lood for the pap non perfroming matfiled is probably the worst rugby call ever made. However should matfiled steal one lineout ball his groupies here and in the press will be swooning and ooooh aaaahing like lunatics. Candidate for man of the match etc. I have seen it all to often before.

Ou Card is now tryting to suggest with Willie away it will be Allende's fault if the backline doesnt fire. Nice try Card but your tactics here are too elementary to be effective.Time for you to admit you got the Allende call hopelessly wrong.
As for the good doctor his call on lomp has also backfired!!
Its a great pity some folk cant recognise exciting young talent.
Thge big shame is how Koch has been so negatively effected by illegal Argie scrumming.
Chances are it will happen again and Marcel van der Merver will be lambasted by then uniformed. Jannie can count himself lucky to not have been playing.
Inevititably the wrong conclusions have been drawn.

B eeno, I simply stated some valid concerns. Willie creates the space as an extension of 10. Not our 12. Without him, who will fix the defence and allow our strike runners to attack with some space? And this creates a bigger problem, if 12 cannot create space backline pressure usually degenerates into short crashballs as the backline gets choked out wide. But Damian has not been able to function in this capacity at all! And what about Lambie? 10 dictates the level the rest of the backline come onto the ball, that's why varying your depth and alignment is so important. Lambie will be able to stand wider because of Ruans improved service, but will he do that? That width stresses the opposition flank from scrums etc. And will Lambie play flat enough to hold the defensive line? It's up to both 10 and 12 to do this, but it starts at 10. Damian likes space and if Lambie plays his usual muddled way Damian will not have that chance and will either shuffle ball aimless out wide, dart back inside or fail carrying the ball up in trying to bring some forward movement to the attack. Then defence. Do you realize that in all the tests that have been played by these two in these positions, only one effective tackle has been made? That's six years of Lambie and several tests of Damian. If you factor in their Super rugby defensive performance it's worse. So you  have statistically the worst defensive centre at 12 with the second worse defensive 10 in Bok history, playing together! Don't be surprised to see Serfontein sooner rather than later.

You are a comic - and a very real one at that.  Every time you write the same crap about De Allende and Lambie.
There were some deficiencies in the defence of De Allende - but not a tenth of what you keep on carping about.   In Super 15 he was not the worst defender either - at 12 Steyn was for instance considerably poorer than him.  He was by some distance the strongest ball carrier in direct attack we have for years - definitely a stronger attacker than Steyn ever was -  and fact is he is also good in open play.  That was why he was the highest rated center 12 in Super 15 and also in the recent test series.   You are so prejudiced against De Allende on account of the fact that he is at 12 and not the useless defending and attacking center Steyn, that you refuse to see anything positive about De Allende and constantly write crap about him on this site.
What is really amazing is your failure to see how much worse the two Steyns are than anybody who have played at flyhalf and center and keep on writing fairy tales about the two of them.  When asked for examples where they ever met the fairy tales attributes  you write about their abilities, you never once name examples
The improved service of Pienaar is another poor joke - he was slow and predictable in each game thus far and really has lost the plot completely.  That deficiency you would naturally use to blame Lambie for the expected poor backline display.   That will be result of rubbish balls from the forwards, where Matfield and Alberts are bound to fail.

Two points here:

1. "...who will lament the complete absence from the match-day 23 this week" - Was he even present in the match day squad at King Park?

2. "Did everything that could have been expected of him" - Was he expected to disappear?

Meyer must surely be on the verge of a full blown nervous breakdown.

He's been in a state of panic ever since he started as Proteas coach.

He knew he didn't have the makings of a good coach. Not at club level, not at CC level and definitely not at test level.

He thought he could wing it and get by ... like he did with the Bulls when they were hot.

He was fortunate to have had a team then that did it all themselves while he sat back and took all the credit.

Now that he has to actually work a bit he's been exposed as utterly incompetent.

The mere fact that he's returned to the pathetic Kirchner says it all.

He doesn't know what to do. He has no ideas, not that he had any to begin with.

There isn't a tiny little bit of innovative thinking in him ... none whatsoever.

The man's in a state of panic.

Why he would accept an extension to his contract is beyond me. I guess the money must be good enough to endure the ridicule of another innings.

He'll go down in history as the one single coach who had vast amounts of talent to select from ... yet deliberately chose to bring the old, the tired, the talentless, the burnt out, the average club player back into the mix ... while using words like "brilliant" and "awesome" to describe his picks at every turn ... all in an attempt to cover up his inadequacies.

This is a fool of a man.

So sad that we have to endure him for another 4 years.

Only a fool would have broken up the de Allende/Kriel combo to bring back an old man.......same can be said of bringing back useless Matfield......there is nothing smart in what Meyer does.

Telling us that old man Kirchner is great and that had Morne been available, he too would have been selected......this is how poor this man's thinking is.

Does he honestly think we are going to take on the world with the likes of Kirchner, Mvovo, Hendricks, Jean, Morne, Pienaar, du Preez, Brits, Heinke, Matfield, Alberts, Louw and the likes.

Hell he begged Jaque Fourie to come back from retirement......had he been fit, he too would be in the mix

Conservatism of the highest order. The guy is useless......just go check all the social media sites, the country wants him gone......they see him for the useless coach that he is

 Dr Goebbels
The least of my worries is De Allende - the most is the players you always support and effectively destroyed the team whenever they played for the Proteas.   The one thing that helps is that even Meyer was not stupid enough to select the worst center dud we have had for years - the useless Francois Steyn.
Most of my worries center around the geriatric duds in the team.    Start looking objectively at the useless players like Matfield, Alberts and Pienaar and you may find out why things have gone awry.   Since Matfield returned to play at lock - he has reduced our Tight 5 to a Tight 4 and we consequently won only 5 of the 10 matches he played in.  Alberts have stopped playing rugby years ago and all he is good for is a name on the teamsheet.
Pienaar has been BS in capital letters - but your rating of him was distorted by your hatred of Reinach.
Those are my worries - but I would double those if Fransie was anywhere near the squad.   His tackling stats were worst than those of De Allende and he has had no attacking ability for four years now.   Maybe he is frightening the wits out of opponents - but I rather think they are choking with laughter when they see him on the field of play.
H ell the day you see rugby and come up with logical comments must be receding by a year at a time.

What SA gets is the facts, no-one can support a fool who thinks the likes of Kirchner, Mvovo, Hendricks, Jean, Morne, Pienaar, du Preez, Brits, Heinke, Matfield, Alberts and Louw are the best in their respective positions.

We all know that a half descent coach would not be entertaining these washed up has beens or never beens at the expense of the class youngsters we have at our disposal.

Imagine a coach selecting a 38 year old ahead Lood, Willemse, PSDT and du Plessis.....that in itself sums up where the social media views are versus how blissfully ignorant you are.

Aren't you a little embarrassed to still be throwing your weight behind this loser?

None of those 2 are as bad as the rubbish you constantly support.  How about commenting of the atrocious record of the Proteas since Slapgat Ouma Victoria returned to play for the Proteas.
He was actually in 11 tests - but I left out the Aussie test where his denuded ham string got injured and he only played for `17 minutes doing zilch in that time.  The Proteas lost that one as well - so 11 tests played - lose 6 win 5.   I am using the same method here as you always use to support Fransie - so you cannot argue about the method.
Matfield is the great destroyer off the SA Tight 5.   Alberts is the Fat chap who has retired from rugby years ago and at 32 like to see his name on the teamsheet.
I can add some other duds you support to - what about Fransie, De Jongh, Leyds et al just for starters?

Meyer has made some bad selections it is true. However constant injuries has not helped him builkd a squad and neither has the inclusion of quota players. No use snapster moaning about Hendricks and Mvovo and blaming the coach.
The Boks, understrengtt as the match 23 was, should have won both tests re nz and OZ. On a ref error adjusted scoresheet Argies also would have been comfortably beaten.
Hence the criticism re Meyer is unbalanced. We actually could easily have won this RC.
However, picking guys like wee victor is a mind boggling error as have some other selections.
Krile not in and Kolisi in - that is pure unadulterated quota nonsense. Not selecting Jaque Du Plessis and Willemse is bad selections. Not playing Faf de Klerk = massive blunder.

You did not read the thread properly - dunce.  I will agree with CC here.  The Springboks had a great name as a sporting team and was a top-rated team before Meyer got hold of it.  At present they are a disgrace and to besmirch the name of the previous Springboks by calling some of the present lot Springboks is an insult to all previous Springboks.
The fact is most of the dinosaurs in the team is destroying their own reputations - while Meyer is not prepared to look at alternatives and has not built up a squad  for the WC over the past three years.  He rushed back to the players he used to be familiar with despite their present performances and is now harvesting the result of that misguided approach.
No team can built a winning culture with that lot in the team - players like Matfield, Alberts, JP Pietersen and Morne Steyn are the root cause of the performance problems over the past 14 months.   And then we have Francois Steyn< Fourie du Preez and even Jean de Villiers as well.

What a ridiculous statement taking into account that the win ratio in the matches he played in, in that period was 80%...

In the matches he did NOT play in, the win ratio is 40%...

So is he now blamed for NOT playing?

The Trroth Fairy
Can you read the 14 months issue in particular.   Morne played in only three tests as a starter and was dismal in the second Wales test in June - so Meyer replaced him and put him on the bench against Argentine with near disastrous consequences.  Despite desperate efforts by Morne to lose the two games he came from the bench games against Argentina - Morne was unsuccessful in his efforts.  He tried the same in the Perth test and we did lose that test.
He is over 31 years of age - was never a good enough flyhalf - a clueless player with kicking at goal his only positive - and he was desperately poor in the games he played in last year.   he became the bench flyhalf for Stade Francais and only start if their first choice flyhalf is not available.
Bearing in mind how poor Morne was last year - so much so that Meyer replaced him with Pollard in the Argentinian tests and after his Perth flop dropped him completely from the side - I would hate to think how poor he is bound to be at present.

I did not consider the matches where Steyn did not start in - since it would have been unfair to the starters in the games.   He came off the bench twice against Argentina - but that was not taken into account.
Ag Foeitog - Trooth Fairy - you are still besotted with Morne - but what can one expect from anyone who cannot see what damage Morne in fact caused.  He was dropped from the team by Meyer no less than 3 times - once in 2012 and twice in 2014.  Would that have happened if he was of any use in the matches he played in?
Remember he was virtually the whole year the back-up flyhalf of Stade Francais and he started only when the first choice flyhalf - Plisson - was not available.   Why is it that a back-up flyhalf for his club is regarded by some as good enough to play for SA?  What can be expected is fatal flaws in critical times during matches and Morne is known for losing the plot in such cases.  Just look at the last ten minutes of each of the games he played in in the RC last year and you will find out where he lost the plot.
Sorry - but he was always a questionable and robotic flyhalf.   Only plank s would think otherwise.

So Beeno, I cannot remember you saying anything about not calling the team Springboks when they lost to two depleted English blocking sides in 2010.

Morne has played better for Stade than Lambie has played for the Sharks, end of discussion. And the team owner commented how Morne has made the role his own. It's end of discussion really. And where is Goosen? Nowhere, and predictably so after you boldly predicted he would take the Top 14 by storm.

Jakkals, you talk the truth here my friend.  Lambie is like a stray dog in the kennels when he is on the field, decisions are made for him.  Goosen is 'n fragile boy with no real talent, the last time he performed was at school.
Morne may kick a lot on instruction from the coach but then his kicks are not aimless like these two and include Poepollard as well.  Morene makes decisions and reads the game expertly.
Personally I think Catrakillis is better than Lambie.
