  • Cape Town - Western Province back Pat Howard has reportedly signed a deal with English Premiership club Northampton Saints.

While the news is yet to be officially announced, Netwerk24 has reliable been informed that Howard will leave the Cape union later this year.

The 23-year-old Howard, who can play wing and centre, is contracted with WP until October 31.

This means he will in all likelihood be asked to stay until the end of this year’s Currie Cup.

Flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis (Montpellier, France) and prop Steven Kitshoff (Bordeaux-Begles, France) are also heading abroad after this year’s Currie Cup, while utility forward Michael Rhodes will head to Saracens in England after the Super Rugby competition.

Howard represented South African at Under-20 level in 2012, but has struggled for a starting berth at the Stormers, with players like Juan de Jongh, Huw Jones, Kobus van Wyk and Johnny Kotze ahead of him in the pecking order.

23 years old and not getting any game time. His career is passing him by, so it is in his interests to sign overseas and at least get game time

Sadly Coetzee is an ignorant prick for not selecting this talented youngster......it was only a matter of time before he left WP.

Good thing is he has played for the Bok U20 side which means he can only play for SA......same applies to Kitshoff thankfully

Howard is a talent lost by the Stormers WP because of the rank stupidity of Coetzee in not realizing that his backline is inadequate.  Howard should have been the no 13 center - De Jongh has way too ma ny deficiencies.

And still there is a thundering silence about one question. Where is Gert Smal's influence in the Stormers set-up?

You know that and I know that. The only problem is that when it was announced that Gert Smal would joining our friends in Cape Town it was shouted, from the hilltops, how Gert was going to sort out Coetzee and his "silly ways".

Nothing has been confirmed by the Saints yet but there is some disquiet about this if it does turn out to be true.Much to many supporters chagrin, last week, Will Hooley was not given a new contract, a young English prospect, and was then snapped up by Exeter. That would be the same team that made us look fools yesterday and cut our lead at the top of the Premiership to a measly 6 points. They have also beaten us Home and Away now in the same Season. The excuse for failing to keep him with us was that we had enough cover in the positions he can play in, even though he favours Fly Half, and we need more Forwards. To then hear that we have potentially signed a foreign player, and one that will fill the exact same positions he did, is galling to say the least.
I have had one lifelong supporter tell me that they have just about done with our illustrious, and I say that with sarcasm, Club.

Look the complete twits running WP including head coach Coetzee didnt even keep Pollard.
Howard should have been playing but an obession with small backs by wee Alistair sunk his chances as it did with Van der Heever. Howard should be knocking on the door for the Boks by now but has been overlooked whilst the half bake de Jongh keeps getting chance after chance and also wee Leyds gets picked on  the wing instead again Howard who at 100 plus kgs and fast is a tremdous prospect.
Sooner Coetzee departs the sooner we have the chance of getting in a proper coach - one lives in hope!
One wonders if this list will grow after RWC. It could be only the beginning.Good luck Howard hope it all works out and apologies re the twits running WP etc. Maybe you should stay and see what the new coach does?

Instead we see investment in physical liabilities like de Jongh, Lleyds, Kolbe and Kotze.

If we consider the injuries to Steph du Toit, Arno Botha, Malherbe, Marcel v/ d Merwe, Frik Kirsten, Kitshoff, Kolisi, Stokkies Hanekom, Visser, Odendaal, Andries Coetzee, Ruan Botha, Faf de Klerk, Frans Venter , Jordaan and the non availability of Frans Steyn the following non selected squad makes good reading and points to Meyers short comings in a big way.

15. SP Marais, Jessie Kriel

14/11. Rhule, Kolbe, Sithole, Kobus v/Wyk, Skosan, v/d Heever

13/12. JJ, Mnisi, Taute, Andre Esterhuizen, Watermeyer, Mapoe, Howard, Sadie

10. Boshoff, Jantjies, Swiel, Catrekillis

9. v/Zyl, Schreuder, Groom

1/3. T.du Toit, S.v/d Merwe, Mellett, Dreyer, Maks v/ Dyk

2. Cooper, Visagie, Scara

4/5. Lewies, Jacques du Plessis, Willemse, Jean Kleyn, Mostert

6/7/8. Mtembu, Elstadt, Brussouw, Rhodes, Labascagne, v/d Walt, E. Oosthuizen, CJ.Stander, Minnie

13 - Juan de Jongh (Stormers): He has not yet set this Super Rugby season alight as he did in the Currie Cup last year, but his performance against the Waratahs was well rounded and impressive.Bubbling under: Malakai Fekitoa (Highlanders)

Lets look at the non selected squad

Marais....dropped by the Sharks after the Saders exposed him

Rhule, Kolbe, van wyk, Skosan and Van de Heever....I like the latter, the rest are non selectable as well as being non selected

JJ=toast,  Esterhosen=blind side flank, the rest are probably even worse

Boshoff= Can't kick under pressure....ditto Jantjies, Swiel = lightweight

Schreuder is terrible, Groom only a bit better

Mellett is a disaster,Thomas = Green, Maks= Maks niks

Cooper, Visagie, Scara....no, not really if one is realistic

The locks are B plus

Lappies=not test material, Stander= Pipe dream.....Brussouw I still admire if his body can survive.

Geez Dave this list is a horror movie of mediocre talent....you can't be serious!

Let me try to illustrate your problem Dave by selecting a team from your squad;

Marais

Sithole

JJ

Esterhosen

Rhule

Catrikilis

Schreuder

Mellett

Cooper

Marcel

Lewies

Mostert

Mtembu

Labuschagne

And heaven only knows who at number 8.

Surely it's obvious to anybody who has watched any rugby that your team loses to the ABs by 50 points and to the Wallabies by 35.

This has nothing to do with the suggestions of Dave and everything to do with the usage of Howard by the Stormers.   To play players like Leyds and De Jongh ahead of Howard in the Stormers and WP teams is an insult to the intelligence of people by Coetzee.
De Jongh was pathetic in most matches this year and his defense is at best a joke in bad taste - his missed tackle ratio is around 28% this year and ball possession losses is back to the pathetic situation of 2012.  Leyds went to the Force last year - was virtually never used by them because he was so pathetic and they refused to renew his yearly contract as a result.  He returned to the Stormers and is suddenly the find of the season for them.   Even a worse defender than De Jongh - these two contributed to major losses by the Stormers this year in no small measure.

 I have.

Northampton Saints sign Stormers centre Pat Howard

Northampton Saints have completed the signing of Stormers centre Pat Howard.

Rumours of Howard's possible move were reported in the South African press on Monday and the Saints have now confirmed the capture of the 23-year-old. He spent three months with Munster earlier in the season and will arrive at the Saints after his Stormers and Western Province duties have come to an end.

"Pat is a young player who has shown plenty of promise in the Currie Cup, Pro 12 and Champions Cup," said director of rugby Jim Mallinder. "We've been impressed by what we've seen, but believe that there is more to come from him and are looking forward to seeing Pat develop in our squad."

"I really enjoyed my time in Europe earlier this year and was delighted when Saints showed interest in me," Howard added. "It is a great opportunity for me to be joining a fantastic club and continue to develop as a player. I cannot wait to pull on the Saints jersey!

"I have had a great time coming through the ranks at Western Province, but feel that now is the right time to experience something new overseas."

Vlagshit trust you to get half the story......if you dig a little deeper you fool you will see that I have gone on record saying that Kolbe is the best of the little guys in the Stormers side and a side can afford to have one little guy.......that little guy would be Kolbe, but only on the wing.

I was talking about that group of small guys as a collective you idiot......the Stormers play too many little guys in their backs......get it????????????????

Moz the problem with your take on my players is that its a load of CRAP......so bullshitting about SP being dropped when in fact he is injured......about sums up your take in general.

We had Esterhuizen exposing you for the bullshit you wrote about his speed, when he took that break and made a fool of you.....lets hope you have put his speed issue to bed now........but my guess is that we will continue to hear you bang on about him being a carthorse.....so he is a blind side flank is he, how did you work that one out.....bwhaaahaaaa

So now all of a sudden Willemse is B grade in your eyes.......you are lying again as we know exactly what you think of him.

A side selected from that squad of non squad members at the time, would be pretty bloody handy.....let me help you a little.

So Jantjies, the form 10 in SA right now, cant kick under pressure......but you advocate Frans as a 10, with his slow hand to foot.......wow Moz......you really are clueless.

You really have no idea when it comes to players......hell you find favour in de Jongh at 13, Matfield at 5.........no more needs to be said.

Sadly I have no influence. Even the old players I know have shunned the Club now and my Uncle, who played, was a Scout for the East Mids and an ever present there on Match days, rarely, if ever, attends these days. The soul of the Club has gone, I'm afraid. They even let non Members into the Crooked Hooker Bar now....a place reserved for the Old Boys. And they let women in....ridiculous !

NH rugby is no different to football now - its stinks.

Its about time the IRB stepped in and placed caps on the number of foreigners each club is allowed to contract.

Po sts: 12009 RE: Bok flyhalf discussion...let's have your views
May 28, 2014, 23:11:41 Goosen walks it hands down, the only real challenger is Lambie. Goosen has shown in the past few weeks that he has his mojo back - the perfect all round flyhalf......great attacking flair and a big boot on him. I also like that he muscled up considerably......which should negate any questions of fragility.

Lambie is another great allround 10, with star qualities.

Morne should never have played a single test for the Boks

Jantjies has fallen to the ignorance of Ackerman.....the same fool who selects Deon v/Rensburg at 13 and Cronje at 9. Its sad how Jantjies has been treated......I trust he will be moving on.

Boshoff is a handy enough flyhalf, I like him.......has a textbook kicking action.....he is not test standard though - he has no x factor with ball in hand.

Frans is no flyhalf, never has been......does not have the temperament for 10 and his hand to foot is too slow under pressure......a handy stand in 10 if need be.

Pollard and Swiel are the best of our up and coming 10's.

Goosen to start with Lambie as back-up......very easy selection

As I have explained a million times, Saffex, they do have capped levels of players....but somehow the clever little legal bods work around it. Like granting a Euro passport, that renders the player invalid from the cap.....and, as I said, it's amazing how many happily married or happily involved players suddenly chuck their women for a Brit/European when they get here. And lo and behold, a Euro passport magically arrives in their laps.
Goodness me....who would have thought it ?
And players/agents/other scummy folk in the game are also culpable.
The whole thing is beginning to put proper supporters off, quite frankly.

And a month later Pollard was the be all and end all............. I would be surprised if we see Goosen in the RWC squad as anything more than a back-up fullback. I would gladly eat humble pie if proven wrong. That is, of course, unless we suffer a few injuries to other prospects at 10.
