Hurricanes back-row Ardie Savea has decided to pull out of contention for the New Zealand Sevens Olympic team and concentrate on fifteens.

Savea joined the All Blacks' Sevens squad this year and was a part of the squad that won back-to-back legs in Wellington and Sydney.

He was to be involved in the last two tournaments of the series in Paris and London before trialling for the Olympic Sevens team in June.

"We’re naturally disappointed that we can no longer call on the services of such a great sevens player,” said Neil Sorensen, General Manager Rugby, for New Zealand Rugby when speaking the All Blacks website.

"He could well have made a huge impact at Rio as he’s a classy player and he proved that again in Wellington and Sydney. However, we understand his reasons. As we said from the outset of our Rio programme, playing sevens was very much a personal choice for players. You’re never going to get the best out of any athlete by forcing them to play against their wishes."

All Blacks Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens said Savea had made a real impact during his return to sevens.

"Of course, we're very disappointed as we’ve enjoyed having him back. There’s little doubt Ardie could’ve been a key player for us in Rio, but we respect his decision," he said.

“What's really important looking ahead, is that we still have a strong squad of players motivated to perform in Rio. That’s creating great competition for places so we’re very excited about the next two tournaments as we shape the best team for the Olympics.”

The All Blacks Sevens squad to prepare for the final two tournaments of the HSBC Sevens World Series assembles in Mt Maunganui on Monday 2 May. The squad of 14 to travel to the Paris Sevens and London Sevens is expected to be named on Thursday 5 May.

Good for the 15 man game & I guess some of us will keep him on our fantasy rugby teams now.
He's been playing really well this season & should make the squad for the tests against Wales. Competition for the 7 jersey is really fierce now, Cane, Todd, Savea will battle it out with Cane having the incu* mbency.

what a surprise!!!!....... that's a big loss for the sevens team,....... but I supose that's the reason behind it,...... the huge competition for the AB openside spot which is now open,...... but could be closed this year,...... and if Savea loses this year for playing sevens at Rio he could see himself out of it

yeah, Cane has the incumbency having been McCaw's back-up for the last years,...... and Hansen & co rarely change their mind,..... but the openside spot is probably more open than it ever has been,......

Todd had an outstanding performance today (IMO deserving MoM),...... and he's getting an excellent form inside the best pack of the comp.,...... Savea's form in the last 2 SR seasons has been outstanding also,...... if you compare the 3 players in the SR competition, Todd and Savea are IMO way ahead of Cane,...... but it's true that each time Cane has played with the AB he had huge games,...... this is going to be a very tough one

.... as for the sevens team,.... he's going to be a big loss but the Ioane bro. are stil there,...... specially Akira Ioane who is the freakish power of this game and wouldn't be called to the AB while he's not starting at blues,..... which is something very difficult to understand (Umaga is making some rare decisisons),....... his skilset is unique and IMO has the words AB written all over him,.... he could be the next AB blindside,...... and after the next WC even Read's sucesor,....

yea mate , how good are the AB stocks with so many quality players in every position...

...even plenty of locks which hasn't always been the case - am picking won't be long before Taleni Seu gets an AB  call up as he's got everything..., came straight on the field and scored the winning try for the Chiefs against the Canes, plays lock and flanker...could be another Nakarawa in the making..

Brycy, even more amazing when we remember that we are coming off a RWC year with the usual exit of rugby greats & the migration of many kiwi players to Europe. Life is good!
We will see who Hansen brings into the squad for the Welsh games, he will be scratching his head on a few players. The 7 position, 10, outside backs & as you said lock... all good problems to have & I am glad we have a good coach making the decisions.

..bro we could easily field two AB teams that are world beaters...the downside of having so many great players is we lose some on the fringe of selection because there are only a finite number of places available...

..the upside is NH rugby is benefiting /improving as a spin off as is the quality of there rugby with the addition of players like Carter and Piutau...and more exciting to watch with all the Kiwis making a marked difference with their new clubs..

Sorry to interrupt this Kiwi mutual appreciation society circle-jerk, but who would the centres be in this 2nd AB team?

Come to think of it, with Nonu gone, Conrad Smith retired, Ranger crocked for the season and Sunni Bill choosing to play 7s this year, who would be the centres in the All Black A team?

I know Charlie Ngatai is having a pretty good season but he's never looked international quality. Same can be said of Ryan Crotty. Do you guys have even one test quality centre left . . . let alone enough for two teams?

...how many internationals do you need to play to look like an international ?...

..Ngatai's already played 13 internationals...eight of those with the Maori ABs where he's the captain...lost count of how many tries he;s scored this season..

Crotty has 15 AB caps....Fekitoa has played 13 internationals...Moala won the test for us against Samoa and might be worth adding to yr fantasy team now Rangers injured...

..Ben Smith also plays outside centre - given how many fullbacks we have might be worth doing.... plenty of options..that's just five centres off the top of my head...not sure who Hansen will pick if that's what yr asking - probably Crotty and Ngatai both who have scored hat tricks just recently if that's any indication of quality...

I'll give you Fekitoa but if Ngatai and Crotty are your best 2nd 5s then you're struggling to put up one decent XV let alone 2.

Ngatai has 1 test cap, not 13 . . . and his try count which is so high that you can't keep track of it is actually 5 . . . 4 of which came in one game . . . so in fact he has only scored in 2 games in total.

Neither Ngatai or Crotty have ever been anything but understudies to the likes of Nonu and SBW so to claim they're of a similar quality now suddenly when Nonu and SBW are not available is a bit of a stretch.

....bro the Maori All Blacks play international teams as well ...even our U20's are called Junior All Blacks so I have totalled all his caps to fourteen...all adds up to international experience however you want to spin it..

...can't find anywhere where I compared anyone to Nonu or SBW but I'm sure whoever Hansen picks will get the job done once they pull on the black jumper...can see Hansen experimenting a bit with a few combinations...

Brycy, doesn't matter how you spin it, Ngatai has a grand total of 1 test cap.

Maori caps count the same as Barbarian caps or World XV caps . . . and as for your notion that junior U20 caps count as test caps, well . . .

No, you didn't compare Crotty and Ngatai to Nonu and Sunni Bill but the fact of the matter is they're vying for their All Black #12 jerseys. I agree that there's no comparison to be made . . . that's really the point I'm trying to make!

...Rooinek ,semantics mate...looks like all those caps are really annoying the shit out of you mate..

...so I was wrong when I said he had got a hat trick when he actually got four tries instead ,in one game - that just strengthens my argument about how good he is..

...and how many centres have better try assist stats than him...probably zero so yr missing a whole side of his game...he also plays a big leadership role in the team in yet another dimension..

..who knows he may not even make the team but if not it's more likely to be through injury given how the Chiefs backline is carving up the opposition...

Really? Do I sound annoyed to you, Brycy? Hey, if you want to pretend that Barbarian caps or U20 caps count as test caps knock yourself out.

The only point I was ever making on this thread was in reply to your boast that the All Blacks could field two world-beating sides. Well, I have no doubt you could select a pretty good second string team but I reckon that team would be short of test quality centres. The fact that you're counting Maori "tests" and U20 appearances to try and justify Charlie Ngatai's inclusion tells me you're pretty desperate but don't let me stop you beating your chest.

...bro can't see anywhere where I said test caps re Charlie Ngatai...what I said was internationals...meaning playing international teams thereby giving him international experience...wasn't boasting about us being able to field two world beating sides either...unfortunately that's not within the rules..so it's all rather hypothetical..

..however yr concern for our centre stocks has been noted and we appreciate yr feedback ... it will be filed in the appropriate place... maybe get back to us again after the next test and we can see how wrong you were...

Rooi, when comparing the ball handling skills of our forwards to SA players we also can call on several of our forwards to round out the copious number of backs, e.g. Faumuina could be used to soften up the opposition before we switched to players like Coles, Reid, A. Savea, Vito, etc.
Fekitoa is a given and I think Grotty will be selected as he is solid & Ngatai will be next IMO. Moala may also be looked at again.
Congrats on beating me in the head to head fantasy rugby!

Tx Justwin. An extremely rare head-to-head win for me in the Foxsport comp.
When you say Fekitoa is a given, is that for the 1st team of world-beaters or the 2nd XV?
I'm still not seeing 4 centres in total (2 centres and 2 2nd 5s for you Kiwis) who are all world-beaters.
Okay, we've got the plodders Crotty and Ngatai at 2nd 5 who despite all their hundreds of U20 and Maori caps could only be considered world-beaters in a parallel universe located somewhere in the far reaches of the south Pacific ocean . . . but even if we give you the benefit of that very strong doubt, we still only have Malakai Fekitoa as the #13.
For a nation that can easily field two world-beating XVs, you guys sure are struggling to name the 4 centres in these two teams!

Never mind the locks and props...and then they haven't even decided on the best 10 going forward. Some potential for sure, but all have weaknesses  (bar Barret IMO). NZ has super talent at it's disposal,  but it seems their success have gone to the head of some fans in a big way.

Rooi, all things are relative so comparing the centers in NZ with the centers in the current potential Boks - no problem mate.
But do the Boks need a backline as they simply use a forward as first receiver after that your options are pass it to wee Willie (a hit or miss player), then onto de Allende (accused as having a tractoring running style by a credible poster on this site); then onto J. Kriel (who I rate as a FB but who has yet to establish himself as a center at national level.
No, I would back the forwards listed above as a safer bet
PS our league is very competitive, I am 7th currently yet I am first in the other league I am in. I don't like the emphasis on head-to-head comp but prefer just a comparison of points .
DB, Cruden first choice, Barrett off the bench is a proven combination. The kicking will sort itself out. My guess is Cruden is still strengthening his leg after knee surgery but will start taking kicks soon.

Barrett is spectacular for sure (as was spencer) & he is also a really good utility option but Cruden is more solid but cannot cover other positions from the bench. So, it is best if Cruden starts & Barrett comes off the bench.
Both players really have determination but with a difference. Cruden never gives up & finds a way to win; Barrett is incredibly resilient & especially if he makes a mistake - then watch out because he will come back with a fantastic play. The play that Mozart & CleverMike "debate" (in terms of who missed the tackle) where Barrett scores a great try is one such example. A fantastic quality to have.

Careful guys ,mustnt over praise our boys .Even if they have won everything in sight for the last 7 years .Hell they even managed a win against Japan !I would rate the NZ Maori games as full test caps ,after all they are playing national sides arent they? Pretty sure they won 19 tests in a row too.n interesting aside the NZ 18th [ Maori ] Batallion beat a SA Army team in 1942 ,in the middle of the desert campaign it would be a bit hairy one imagines.

Brycy, I'd have Ngatai in there in a heartbeat at 2nd five alongside Fekitoa but Hansen has shown faith with incumbents (and their backups) up to now so won't be surprised if he goes for Crotty given he has had more test experience up to now.Either way we are blessed as you said with the quality to replace Nonu and Smith. Crotty is as steady as, distributes the ball well and doesn't throw any "Hail Mary" passes at the wrong time.Ngatai has all of these attributes along with a great kicking game, a good sidestep and blistering pace for a 12. He has improved out of sight this year.Note to Rooi; Brycy said we could field 2 world beating TEAMS, he didn't say that all players would be the absolute best in the world in their positions! That's what teamwork is all about.

Just for the sake of clarity, when you guys say you can easily put together two "world-beating teams", are you saying that you could put together two teams that would beat every other side in the world or are they both teams that would beat a World XV made up of the best players of all the other inferior countries combined?

Wardad, you and the other Kiwis are trying very hard to make this a SA vs NZ thing. It's not. I'm not saying SA centres are better than NZ centres nor am I denying we lost a humiliating match to Japan in the last RWC. Okay? Calm down and try to understand what I am actually saying.

Whew, you guys do get very sensitive, don't you?

Just to recap, Brycy made a boast that NZ could put together two world-beating teams. Okay. When I saw that post, I thought about who would crack the second NZ team and it struck me that with injuries and retirements, you guys are a bit thin at centre and I said as much. You would have thought I had just raped and killed all the babies in New Zealand judging by the purple-faced, frothing and indignant responses I got from your lot!

Okay, so now I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and we're going to pretend that relative plodders like Ryan Crotty and Charlie Ngatai are world class centres  but all I'm asking for now is a little bit of clarity . . . are these two "world-beating teams" simply capable of beating every other team on the planet or would they in fact be capable of both beating a World XV comprising all the other untermenschen in a combined team?

Do you at least understand the question I'm asking ?

awesome news regarding ardie giving up on sevens, hes been the best looseforward in super rugby this seasson.

cane has got to get the nod ahead as the All Blacks incu.mbent 7 having been king richies understudy the last 4 years, but its only a matter of a time before ardie overtakes him.
ardies all round game compliments the All Blacks attacking philosophies, and not at the expense of what is expected of an opensides regular duties.
not saying that canes not a good attacker, but ardie can do everything that cane do and some of it (especially the attacking aspect of their game) he does much much better.

i saw an interview with savea where he said rio was the number one priority on his 2016 rugby calendar, especially rio. so i wonder why the sudden change of heart???
i would not be surprised if hansen had been in touch with ardie and maybe nudged him in the direction of the All Black. hansen knows the for that ardie is in some exceptional form, and to have that in the All Blacks would spell the doom of all who stand before the mighty All Blacks.

@basque fan,
"yeah, Cane has the in[removed]bency having been McCaw's back-up for the last years,...... and Hansen & co rarely change their mind,..... but the openside spot is probably more open than it ever has been,."

agree that openside is more open than it ever has been.

but i disagree regarding hansen and co changing their minds. skudder is testament to that, he debuted for the All Blacks last year and was our incu.mbent 14 from pretty much his test debut.

the dumping of dagg can also be used as an example of hansen not being afraid to make the tough but best choices for the All Blacks.

while i know the uzumaki clan  have an eternal alliance with the hurricanes which may lead to accusations of me being biased, IMHO ardie will be one of the next surprise changes in hansens line of thinking as he becomes All Blacks coach.

"Savea's form in the last 2 SR seasons has been outstanding also,...... if you compare the 3 players in the SR competition, Todd and Savea are IMO way ahead of Cane,...... but it's true that each time Cane has played with the AB he had huge games,...... this is going to be a very tough one"
couldnt agree more.

while im certain ardie will eventually usurp the imc.mbent All Black no7 jerssey of cane, canes reliable performances to date means he will be given every chance to prove him self the better All Black option.

".... as for the sevens team,.... he's going to be a big loss but the Ioane bro. are stil there,...... specially Akira Ioane who is the freakish power of this game and wouldn't be called to the AB while he's not starting at blues,..... which is something very difficult to understand (Umaga is making some rare decisisons),....... his skilset is unique and IMO has the words AB written all over him,.... he could be the next AB blindside,...... and after the next WC even Read's sucesor,...."
yeah im glad the ioane bros are still there, NZ 7s team need all the firepower they can get with blitzboks and especially fiji looking deadly.

dont forget that cane was called into the All Blacks while being a bench warmer for the chiefs, im pretty sure he started less then 5 games for the cheifs in 2015 so there is precedence.

akira definately has All Black written all over him.
not sure why umaga has benched akira in 2016 for the blues, obviously hes not taking over kaino on the openside flanker, but hes a very competent no 8 and 6.
maybe umaga could bump luatua to lock as a solution, then he could have them both on the field.

IMO our All Black looseforward trio will soon look like this...
6 a ioane, 7 a savea, 8 k read, 20 s cane.
i hope non All Black fans dont read that line up, cos its only going to give them rugby nightmares.

..Sas ..as our friend Rooinek will tell you, we have enough loose forwards for several AB teams... and in that respect Matt Todd hasn't been too shabby for the Crusties aniether...being from Hansens hometown might even put him further up the pecking order than Savea...?

...am a big Ardie Savea fan myself ,have him in my fantasy team and even if Cane outplayed him on the weekend I'm with you about using Cane off the bench for the ABs ...

...Sam Cane's a machine, has captained the ABs and part of the leadership group so he's locked in.. , both Cane and Savea bring their own unigue set of skills... but it's difficult to ignore Ardie Savea's impressive set of stats in comparison...

...but Savea is still on the fringes of AB selection and will need to play consistently well for the rest of the season to be considered...consistency being the operative word....

..looking forward to seeing how he goes against the Lions this weekend being tested by Kriel, Whitely and co...love the way he's always trying to get one up on his brother which is great motivation for him to play well..

Hansen brought A. Savea into the AB camp early & took him as a tourist on an end of year tour if I remember rightly. He then was managed carefully in terms of game time. This season he is really c oming into his own. He has increased his weight and game time. Is he ready for a season of super rugby and then AB season after that? Hansen & Ardie's coaches have done everything right so far.
Maybe they will bring him in & play him off the bench with Cane starting. This is the next logical step to see how he goes - not throwing him in the deep end like the SA coaches do.

True JW ,other coaches would probably have bunged him i there national side 3 years ago and hoped for the best .Anyone remember how one dimensional Ma'a was when he started ? He even got dumped for a bit but added to his skillset and honed his abilities till it was impossible to keep him out .
