Hulk Burger to lead Boks
  • 21 Jul 2015
219  3Schalk Burger in action against the Wallabies

Schalk Burger will become the 55th Springbok captain when he leads the side out against the All Blacks on Saturday.

The 32-year-old has been named interim captain in the absence of the injured Jean de Villiers and Victor Matfield. He assumes the captaincy from Matfield, who was ruled out of action in the short term after suffering a hamstring strain against Australia.

'Schalk has been a magnificent servant of Springbok rugby and he fully deserves this responsibility,' said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer on Tuesday.

'The resilience he’s shown in coming back from serious injury and illness is the kind of qualities I look for in players as well as teams I coach.

'In my eyes, the captaincy is very important and something I never take lightly or want to cheapen. Schalk’s character and the fact that he has been a role model for so many through the years made this an easy decision.

'He’s always led through example and has distinguished himself as one of the best leaders in South African rugby in the last decade. I’m very excited to see what he can bring in the absence of Jean and Victor.'

Burger has captained the Stormers and Western Province with distinction and will become the 10th most-capped Springbok at Ellis Park on Saturday, winning his 77th cap, moving level with lock Mark Andrews.

He overcame serious injury and illness in 2014 to fight his way back into Springbok contention, recapturing the form that made him one of the most highly regarded loose forwards in world rugby.

Burger, who made his Test debut at the Rugby World Cup in 2003, said he was humbled by the decision to name him captain.

'I’m a very proud man today, but at the same time I’m humbled by the faith the coach has shown in me. Ever since I first put on the Springbok jersey, my dream has been to represent my country with distinction and to make South Africans proud. It’s still sinking in that I will actually captain the Boks.

'This is an honour that is bestowed upon only a select few people and I will do whatever is needed for the team. With this position comes massive responsibility and I’m very excited for Saturday.'

Looks like Pienaar took the blame for the Boks losing. Some of the option taking at the end of the match was pathetic.
The Boks were easily the better team for 60 minutes of the match- before going into a conservative shell instead of scoring again to put the game out of reach for the Wallies

I think that Pienaar was replaced at minute 67.   To be quite frank he was not tops when also  having to take over the captaincy early.  However, of Meyer wants a backline player as vie-captain he was in a dwang - he only had Pienaar and Habana to choose from.  Pietersen is nowhere near good enough even to be in the team and I think Meyer cho se Pienaar in preference to Habana.
Be it as it may Burger took over at minute 67 from Pienaar as captain.  Hope he does better on Saturday.
Good news seems to be we are rid of Matfield - at least for the upcoming game.

Mike,  Pienaar played better than in all the other games Meyer picked him,  so dropping him now makes sense in the nonsensical way we got used to in the last 2 decades of Bok rugby.  But is he really dropped?  If true,  Mornè will probably start.

Oh for heaven sake Pienaar was a backline vice captain. The fact that he was vice captain  did not mean he was next in line for the team captaincy. Another Miss Marple moment gone wrong.

Nobody said Pienaar was dropped from the team - Meyer is too stupid to do the right thing in that case - he should be.  The worst thing Meyer can do is to play the clueless and useless Morne Steyn on Saturday at flyhalf - we will in that case lose by 20 plus points.  The last time Steyn played at flyhalf against the AB's at Ellis Park we lost because of him.  He was utterly useless in the 2013 test and he gifted the AB's at least 14 points because of seriously flawed decision-making and poor execution - coupled to putrid defense.   He did a Morne special just before halftime in that test - same as he did in Perth just before the end of the test last year .

Pienaar was the least of our troubles. But unless Du Preez plays, we should stick with Ruan. His service was faultless and that aided in our attack significantly. Reinach is not going to improve on that. Our biggest issues were that our centres lacked repeling force on defence and we could not apply pressure with the boot. Our front row was another, and bigger, issue when the replacements came.
Sharkbok, the Boks were not as dominant as you'd like to think. In the first half, despite being dominated at the breakdown, Australia threatened regularly. They had many tries gone begging and wreaked havoc in our midfield. From the start of the second half they were attacking wave after wave for most of that half, in our half. Kuridrani playing the fool with Damian was where Australia had a foot in the door and it ultimately cost us that test.

We did not lose at Ellis Park because of Steyn. He was the better Bok back on the day. Even saved Duanes blushes in poor tackles. But I have dealt with your lies regarding that test before. If you want to see a Bok team lose by around 20 points primarily because of our 10 against New Zealand, why not revisit the 2011 masacre - still a record loss in New Zealand to this day - involving Lambie? Or the home loss of 2012 involving Goosen and Jantjies?
Ironically, after being comprehensively destroyed in 2011 with Lambie, the Boks proceeded to defeat New Zealand in their final game of the Tri Nations and nearly nilled them in the process! The team that would later win the World Cup, and Morné was central to that result alongside Fourie.
You get it so wrong, so often.

 Desert Disaster
There are two issues here that you miss out on.  The first one was that your lies about De Allende has been thoroughly exposed already - so that one we can put to rest.  You should be ashamed about that collection of lies about last week already.
The worst show of any flyhalf in the time since Meyer was appointed was Morne Steyn - always a piss poor clueless robot.  He was desperately poor in the Ellis Park test in 2013 test missing nearly half of his tackle attempts -worse than any other flyhalf in the Meyer era.  The special I referred to nearly gave Naas Botha a seizure - he spoke about that one for nearly the full discussion during the match half time.   Because the robotic Morne Steyn  was told before the match to pass the ball and not to do his normal to donkey kick everything away, he did not make a relieving kick from near the AB's tryline when he should have and passed the ball seconds before halftime - directly causing Messam's second try.   His piss poor defense in that game was standard Morne's - so we can state that as a fact as well.
Incidentally it was not Duane that made the poor tackles which he was supposed to blush about according to you - it was Fatso Willem Alberts - you miserable liar.  Lets evaluate Morne Steyn's desperate efforts to lose test matches and put them in order of success by him in that respect:-
*   The Ellis Park test in 2013*   The Perth test in 2014     **   The Dunedin test in 2012  *       *   The Argentine away test in 2012*   The Argentine   home test in 2014*   The Argentine away test in 2014
*  Morne was dropped even by the nearly-in-tears Meyer after those two disasters,
His memorable contribution to the at home test last year was a charged-down kick where De Allende in a desperate effort prevented Bosch from scoring a try for the Argentinians,  The away test he desperately tried to ensure an Argentinian win by donkey kicking a ball into touch - an effort that put the Argentinians attacking in the final two minutes of the game, which they could have won through a penalty or dropped goal.  Fortunately enough that was avoided because the normal penalty machines were absent at that late stage of the game and the Argentians strangely enough did not attempt a very easy drop kick.
The Morne Steyn history  since 2012 was always a recipe for disaster - in that period Lambie was ten times better than piss poor Morne.   Lets comapre their record since 2012 (only starting games indicated):-
Morne 2012 :   Played 8 - won 3 - drew 2 - lost -3Lambie 2012 :  Played 3 - won 3
Morne 2013 ;   Played 12 - won 10 - lost 2
Morne 2014 :   Played 3 - won 2 - lost 1Lambie 2014 :  Played 4 - won 3 - lost 1
Summary :  Morne  played 23 - won 15 - Win percentage =  65,18%                Lambie played 7 - won 6 - Win percentage  = 85,71%
I assume in your dismal reckoning a 65% winning percentage is better than an 85% one - so we can accept that somewhere in your feeble thinking that is the case.

Still ... Meyer selected him as vice capt ... deliberately ... why?? ... he should have used his head instead because anything can happen on the day and we'd be forced to depend on the decisions of this brain dead moron to lead our side for the rest of the match.

Is it any wonder we lost?. Meyer can't even select his vice capt properly. How's he ever going to select the correct match 23 when he himself seems to be a few cans short of six pack.

Moron!!!!

Go All Blacks!!!!

Burger is a vast improvement on Matfield.  At least he produce the goods on the field of play and does not moonlight in the back reducing the Tight 5 to a Tight 4.  Burger is physically strong enough to produce the goods in the position he fills in the team, while Matfield is too physically-deficient to be a lock.
i hope De Jager has another cracker on Saturday.  If so - we may just witness the departure of the weak dummy from the team.   However, that is unlikely - since Meyer might just wants the creep irrespective of what happens.

De Jager was miles better than Matfield has been in any match he played in during the past year.   Did that mean that Matfield cracked up in every match he played in?  I think De Jager was miles better because he is a lock, not a half-backed backline moonlighter reducing the Tight 5 to a Tight 4.

Nope Tokkie, I can't think of one try Matfield has let through by a defensive lapse in his 122 match  test career. I can think of two Lomp has let through in his 10 match test career. So are we to conclude if Lomp plays as long as Victor he will let through 24 tries?

Still going on with the same lie - Mozart.  But then what about the way Matfield collapsed in the English test - earning a yellow card in the process.   For the rest Matfield gave away enough penalties and buggered up badly in both All Black tests last year to write a book about.

The day will never happen that your descriptions of what appears in videos is correct.  The descriptions are often just plain BS - with lies predominating.  The problem is you write what you wish to have seen happening - depending on whether you like the player (far-fetched praise songs) and those you dislike (total misrepresentations).   And of stats you can talk without even knowing how to evaluate stats to arrive at a meaningful determination of performance value.  So when you look at stats you do not know what they in fact means.
At lest I am honest and give an honest assessment of eprformance - you have been exposed as a liar and that is a fact.

No Tokkie, lets not even go to the penalty thing....stick to the topic. Name when Matfield blew a defensive assignment for a try once in his 122 tests.

Easy - I would name an incident if you talks the truth and admit that you lied about De Jager as is clearly visible in the video of the match.
But you cannot deny that Matfield cannot carry balls in traffic and gave away numerous converted penalties when it happened because he goes straight down and then hangs onto the balls.   Also in denial about the yellow card of Matfield in the Twickenham test last year - now are you?
