There is now little doubt that Schalk is back, in some ways better than ever. His hold up of Pococok for the maul, try, pick up of low errant passes and high intensity contact play says so. What amazes me about this bloke is he can carry a ball into a pod of four opposing forwards and always present it back to his team.
But it was his calm leadership after Vermeulen left that made his captaincy claims. Last week I demurred when somebody suggested Schalk, on the basis he wasn't a certain pick....but as another match goes by he silences more doubts. If Matfield and Jean are not available Schalk could be the best of the lot.
