Im just going to come out and say it...
There is just no way that HM can contemplate overlooking Schalk Burger for this years RC and RWC in this sort of form.

Even his biggest critics would be hard pressed to find any reason to leave him out.
I would even go so far as to play him as an opensider if we have to play him and Coetzee.
I am a massive Marcell Coetzee fan. I see him as the leader of our loose trio for years to come, but right now Schalk is my man.

Lets forget about his pitbull style of play for 80 minutes...
Lets just think about what else he brings to the table..
Take a look at him in between plays.... motivating, giving "gees", pulling together... the man is an incredible team player and motivator and there is little more important than a man that can bring a team together when the chips are down. I'm not saying he'd be my 1st choice captain, but he has an aura about him that very few legends have.

Now back to his game play...
Clevermike is going to come with stats to try and prove me wrong...
But go back and watch the Stormers games, even when they have lost.
The man still stands out like a sore thumb.... bouncing from 1 ruck to another. His work rate is phenominal.
Look at his tackle ans assisted tackle count (@clevermike), his ball carries and his support play.

I know some people are going to come on and say that he is getting old.
Bollocks! How old is he? 32?? That really isnt too old now is it??
If you are good enough, you should be on the field. Form overpowers age in my books.

Yes, after the RWC, lets take stock and bring through some younger guns, but if you look back at every RWC since 95, the team that has had the leadership and experience on the field, tended to pull through the final.
Gregan, Back, Dallaglio, McCaw, Smit, Matfield.... just to name a few...
We now have Schalk, who would fit in to that category.

I see no reason why he should not be in our starting XV.

Can someone please give this man a Bells?
Well said FD.

I especially love your line "If you are good enough, you should be on the field. Form overpowers age in my books."

That goes for young players as well!

Saf?

Anyone disagree with my comments?

So far it seems as if this could be the very first post where we have 100% buy in?

Schalk is a must for the Boks, he has found a new lease of life and is playing the best rugby he ever has done.

Flash I made the point about Schalla many moons ago suggesting that this great player would be back and that he wasnt too old.I do however draw the line at the 105 kg and 38 year lock impostoir wee victor. I do of course agree with your performance only criteria which ou maaaike also holds to.He has been reasonably complimentary of Schalla as this players progress has continued its upward curve .

If healthy -  Schalk, Matfield and du Preez will all start the 2015 WC final, Boks will win and there will be plenty of crow to go around.

Yep of all the old men, he is the only worthy one......I'd take him to the WC

Flash, not sure why you are talking about him vs Coetzee as Schalk is playing 7 and Coetzee 6.

Schalk is playing his best rugby right now as he is playing in his rightful position of 7

 @saf
yeah i was just saying that i'd play schalla over coetzee as an opensider if HM really wanted to be daft and choose anyone else on blindside.

But YES absolutly... Coetzee and Schalk and Duane would be ideal for me. Then probably have someone like J Kriel come on as an impact player for the last 15 or 20 if need be. But we have so many options, its scary... in a good way

"I am going to print this thread and frame it! For the first time ever, we all agree on something!"

Not so fast . . . I'd pick Marcell Coetzee, Jaco Kriel and Heinrich Brussow ahead of Skulk in the #6 jersey; I'd pick Jacques du Plessis and Nizaam Carr ahead of Skulk in the #7 jersey and I'd pick Duane Vermeulen and Warren Whiteley (and a fit Arno Botha) ahead of Skulk in the #8 jersey.

I would certainly consider Skulk for my bench because he's very versatile and could cover all 3 loose forward positions, but I don't see where he could start for the Boks if the team was picked on form rather than reputation.

Having said that, I do think Heyneke Meyer will pick Skulk in the #7 jersey in July. I think he'll pick a loose forward trio of Coetzee, Burger and Vermeulen . . . and to be honest I'd take that ahead of any combination that includes Oupa Mohoje or some other quota option.

Nope no way would I ever pick Schalk as a 6......and certainly not over Coetzee.

Schalk would make my squad he would not make my starting 15.

My options at 6 would be Coetzee, Brussouw, Kriel, Carr, Labs or Kolisi

My options at 7 would be PSDT, Jacques du Plessis, Schalk, Elstadt, Labs, CJ Stander, Arno Botha, Rhodes, Liebenberg or v/d Walt

My options at 8 would be Vermeulen, Arno Botha, CJ Stander, Whiteley, v/d Walt, Mtembu or Liebenberg

Our best possible starting trio would be Duane, Alberts and Brussow. The strength of those three is ridiculous. My backups would definitely have Schalk and Coetzee.

Move on to what? Are you seriously telling me you plan on going to the World Cup without one of our best ball carriers and defenders? What alternative do suggest? Coetzee? I would much rather have Schalk at 7. Alberts is a key weapon, and minus Flip we can not mess around here. Omitting Alberts would be a huge gaff.

After reading this thread, one thing is clear, we are seriously spoiled for choice when it comes to loosies. Also, and many will hate me for even saying this, but Spies has also been in decent form.

I'd play Jacques du Plessis or PSDT ahead of Alberts at 7, given I would play Willemse and Etzebeth as my locks.

Alberts might have been all that a few years ago, I have not seen any of that for ages

To play PSDT at 7? That should never happen. Not unless all our loosies were injured. Our coach is a smart man, whose only flaw has been giving the fans what they want. Those mistakes have been: de Allende, Jantjies, Lambie, Goosen, Reinach, Bismarck over Strauss, Louw over Brussow. Aside from that he has done little wrong. If he had the Bok team of 2008-2011 we would have won the World Cup, no doubt about that. What he has done with such scant talent is extraordinary. 22 tests where only New Zealand could beat us. Only three teams have beaten us under Meyer, NZ, Aus and Wales. And the Welsh loss could have been averted had Meyer not given the fans what they wanted!
