It's not only those country towns in the SW Cape that appeal to me but mainly memories of Agulhas towns like Stilbaai, Herma nus, Arniston and further up Knysna, Jeffreys Bay and Cape St Francis that appeal. But sadly they are not a shadow of their former self...huge developements have sullied them...greed and tasteless new money desecrates natural beauty. I can understand Ol' Maaiks sentiments....the once beautiful Natal North Coast has been totally ruined by developements in Ballito and Zinkwasi...it's a mess today.
Yes the lovely little harbour in Genoa would appeal to me too but thats a pipe dream...I now live in Hillcrest KZN which too was once a beautiful little country village but an abortion today...if it was not for the love of the further afield Midlands and Drakensberg where I enjoy my flyfishing for trout, I would find living here unbearable.
I'm a country boy at heart and love both the mountains and the sea...big city life is shallow to me with all its falseness and materialism...a certain madness that grips man's insane need to crowd...give me space anyday... thats why I cannot understand why you with all your financial independence to want to live in a dump where ol' Blue Eyes and Scareface made their lairs.
I guess each to his own...thank goodness we are not the same otherwise even those rare places of beauty would be more crowded than they really are

Actually I live on a bluff over Lake Michigan in a delightful suburb. It is country living, we have coyotes and especially deer passing through at times. Beautiful red tailed hawks breed on the property. I have oak trees, ash, elms, weeping beach, birch, chestnuts, weeping katsuras, ginkgos, tulip trees, hemlocks, maples and grape arbors. It's not the city.
The golf courses are superb, regularly attracting the Pom golfing set. We have a world class music festival just down the road every summer. And there's a Ferrari dealership in town. I can take a 3 minute walk and swim in Lake Michigan.
Have you ever been to Chicago, you seem a bit out, of date Capone is dead.

That sounds quite pleasant....but too close a big industrial city scares the hell out of me ...no I have not been to Chicago but I did go to visit other parts and these huge cities in the States would come last of the list of places to inhabit.
Not criticising but only fail to understand...you obviously like big city life and as I said each to his own.

No I don't like big city life....but I like having access to big city life. You can have your cake and eat it. But if you don't like great music, good food, wonderful opera, great museums and great sporting events....it surely wouldn't matter.

Am with you Moz, the perfect balance is living out in the bush with easy access to a city.
Skip the opera though.....give me Kings of Leon or Pearl Jam anyday!!

Well we dont have Pearl Jam but we have Aretha Franklin and Santana 15 minutes away. And if Seb wants to fish he could fly fish for salmon in late May and early June. Nothing like catching a king salmon off the rocks.
Dave nothing substitutes for the great vistas of South Africa.....but one can duplicate the micro beauty of a lovely Cape Town suburb....and do so without having to watch whose behind you.

And the incredible thing is I can now watch the S15 on my TV....and I'm about to eat my Pro Nutro breakfast. Later I might have an Ouma rusk. Both of which I ordered right off Amazon. The world is truly one's oyster these days!

I haven't been everywhere, but I have seen every continent except Antarctica, which I figure looks like Chicago in winter. And nothing comes close to South Africa....the mountains, the sea, the wind , the heat, the air, the smell of fynbos.
