S harks in shambles, but at least without White training and playing is fun

  • Companies and organisations: Sharks

THE Sharks were quick to dismiss Springbok World Cup-winning coach Jake White last year after a eight-month stint that delivered winning the South African Conference, a first-ever win against the Crusaders in Christchurch, a first-ever back-to-back triumph in New Zealand and three away wins in four Australasian tour starts.

White’s Sharks won a home quarterfinal before losing the semifinal away to the Crusaders.

The end for White was abrupt. The senior players wanted him out because they found his methods too disciplinarian, too prescriptive and too draining.

They didn’t like the protocols White had instilled, among these demanding the players report to King’s Park at 8.30am for a working day.

It was not the way things were done in Durban. It apparently was not the Sharks way and the players were unhappy.

White was not prepared to compromise. He was also not prepared to continue to work with a coaching staff (in Brad McLeod-Henderson and Paul Anthony) whose professional coaching experience did not extend beyond a year.

Sharks CEO and former Springbok captain John Smit had made the appointments of the former high school coaching duo.

Smit and McLeod-Henderson had played as teammates for the Sharks. Anthony had coached Smit at Pretoria Boys High.

Smit insisted on the duo’s potential amid criticism that it was a jobs-for-pals situation. Brendon Venter was another Smit had included in the Sharks setup, as a consultant to the inexperienced professional coaching twosome.

Venter had overseen the winning of the Currie Cup, but White emphasised that was a feeder competition and Super Rugby was the toughest provincial competition in the world.

White was nonnegotiable in his thinking on the history of Super Rugby. The Sharks had never won the title. He felt it was unacceptable that the Sharks continued to fail with the quality of the squad, the budgets available and the strength of the Sharks brand.

He felt only a change of culture would bring about a change in results. The players were entrenched in their ways and accustomed to a rugby lifestyle that accommodated their social lifestyle.

White, despite his Midas touch wherever he has coached, was not the right fit for the Sharks. They deemed him unpopular and the players flexed their muscle to force an immediate exit.

You would have believed the Sharks were wooden spoonists in the competition; such was the send-off of the World Cup winner.

The Sharks Currie Cup team then took a 50-point beating in the semifinal of the domestic competition and settled into an off-season in which everyone expressed happiness and confidence in the likes of McLeod-Henderson and Anthony.

They are considered good guys in Durban and the players like them. But this happy team took 50 points in a semifinal.

And this happy team was made even happier with the appointment of former Springbok assistant coach Gary Gold as the director of rugby and effectively the head coach.

The pre-season was hyped because the players were content and had the right fit in coaching staff, who would allow the players to express their natural talent.

Anthony was a media regular in talking up the attack of the Sharks. McLeod-Henderson spoke of the culture, new defence coach Michael Horack spoke of the balance required on defence and attack. Gold, who only arrived a week before the season proper because of Japanese coaching commitments, added to the celebration of Sharks rugby, which in the 2015 Super Rugby season would reward attack.

This squad was going to entertain, score tries and win over friends of the running game, White’s Sharks were deemed dour, boring and condemned for having allowed a head coach to instill discipline, defence and conditioning as the pillars of their blueprint.

White, in 2014, did the talking when it came to rugby matters. Now everyone had a voice and every day a player or one of the coaching staff was waxing lyrical about the joys of Sharks rugby and of the ambitions of an attack-minded team that wanted to entertain with five-pointers and not win because of an ability to deny the opposition five-pointers.

Life, as a Sharks rugby player, was good again. Order had been restored.

Then the season started and the Sharks lost at home to the Cheetahs in the opener and the first month produced a team of individuals, ill-disciplined on the field, devoid of defensive desire and yet still convinced they were a content unit capable of winning the tournament.

White’s Sharks had conceded 22 tries in winning the South African conference and making the semifinals. Gold’s happy campers in 2015, eight rounds into the competition, have already conceded 22 tries.

The Crusaders, reduced to 12 against the Sharks 15 at one stage, put 50 past the Sharks in Durban and the Lions beat them in Johannesburg at the weekend.

But Smit, Gold and the players don’t agree that the Sharks are a squad in crisis.

It’s all smiles within the group in Durban and the leadership has been dismissive of critique around the coaching appointments and player recruitment.

White is coaching Montpellier in France — a team he has improved and are now favoured to make the play-offs. He has done it through discipline and a respect for defence.

But White’s is a cussed name in Durban because he did it his way. That upset the players and support coaches.

Sure they won the South African conference and made the semifinals but rugby was apparently made to feel more like a job.

Players, it is said, again have their voice and every coach is a voice in 2015.

Rugby again feels like a sport and Monday to Friday is no longer an 8.30-start working day.

On-field discipline and defence are things that went with White.

Training is again a pleasure, as is playing because where White demanded discipline and winning, the perfect fit of coaches and players have agreed it is about entertaining and freedom of expression.

Hence, the continued defence of team unity and disregard and annoyance at anyone who describes the 2015 campaign as a shambles and suggests the word crisis.

Jake demanded higher standards....he needed to be backed by management. These guys deserve everything they are currently experiencing. The sickening crowing as a WC winning coach was unfairly let go has been stuffed right down their gullets.

Where did the journalist got his story from?  This is Jake White glorification at its worst.   There are two sides to the story - the White side and the comprehensive side.
Jake White had his good points such as disciplinary requirements which is a strong point in his favour.   However, his handling of the players also had serious negatives and those include -
*   insistence on a negative kicking role for his flyhalfs to the exclusion of backline players;
*   the ineffectiveness of Steyn in that kicking game - which as a result of aimless and inaccurate kicking frequently put the Sharks on the backfoot and caused them possession and territory losses coupled to White's constant protection of Steyn; and
*   the favouritism he displayed towards a few players and the constant blaming of most players for deficiencies during matches.
There was serious disruption in the ranks of the players not about the discipline part, but about the whole Jake White system with reference to his game plan and the way he gave some of his favourite players preferential treatment to the detriment of others and the resultant deficiencies in creation and maintenance of a team spirit encompassing all players.
All of the above was in the media before and the new 08:30 story is a kindergarten invention.    No players refused to report for duty when so required - the issues mentioned above were the real problem between Jake White and the players.
Fact is that Smit had a major share in the problems encountered by the Sharks.  They mentioned the appointment of assistant coaches and his friendship with Venter as a problem - which it no doubt was - but they never mentioned the contracting of Stevens, Wentzel and Botha - which contributed to the existing geriatrics problem at the Sharks.
The main problem that hit the Sharks in the place where it hurts most - namely in the pocket - because of public disenchantment with a negative game plan, caused spectator numbers to slip dangerously.
That was the total picture that caused serious problems in the Sharks set-up.  Let me state clearly - the players are not above blame, but the real problem was the total disruption of the whole environment that caused serious player, management and public disenchantment central to the problems at present encountered at the Sharks.     White was only part of that disruption - but a major negative part nonetheless.

Agreed Mike. I never had any respect for Keo and my main gripe against White was always his close association with Keo. It seems that John has caused a few problems since he took over, were he a politician he might have been branded as corrupt.  Sharks are in deep waters ATM.

So White has Montpelier headed to the playoffs? Imagine that.
Jake White 1 - Deniers 0, again.

He's the Bill Belichick of rugby. Obtuse, but so effective
We will rue the day he is appointed head coach of an international contender. Much more of a loss to SA rugby than any of our defecting players. One would imagine there will be some positions open after this WC.

As a person in contact with many people in the know, I think there was an objective article not so long ago.   The article emphasized three issues to be addressed by the Sharks.  Those include -
*   dealing with mistakes made by John Smit since his appointment by the Sharks Franchise as CEO;
*   the appointment of competent supporting coaches - especially backline and forward coaching staff;
*   and cleaning out of the player complement by getting rid of deficient and often geriatric elements in the squad and rebuilding of the squad on the same basis as Muir did in 2005 - the squad needs more youthful players in their ranks.
The present player deficiency as a result of serious disciplinary problems especially - has brought to the fore a number of youngsters - eg Esterhuizen and Marais.  Other players like Lewies, Lambie, Jordaan and Du Toit will be back as soon as they have recovered from their injuries and Thomas du Toit is growing better and becoming more prominent.   However, there are still major other gaps to be filled - like a Tighthead and strengthening of the loosies - while the Sharks are very thin in the backline in most positions.

It's not a quick fix for the Sharks and as a loyal and passionate Sharks supporter I'm prepared to give Gary Gold more time to fix the mess that Joke White left behind.

No surprise to see that Joke White implemented so many petty and small-minded processes at the Sharks like making the players work a normal working day starting every day at 08h30. I mean really, what kind of gigantic knob would try to remove all the flexibility that comes with being a professional sportsman? No wonder the senior players wanted this supercilious and self-serving control-freak gone.

The damage that Jake the Snake did to the Sharks psyche and their traditional values could take years to repair. The team hasn't yet shaken off the aimless and uninspiring kick-and-chase game plan we saw during Jake's tenure, but if that isn't bad enough, there's also a very worrying lack of culture or identity in the team as can be seen from the ill discipline, the red cards and the suspensions.

I don't blame Joke White entirely for this mess. I also blame John Smit for being stupid enough to hire Joke in the first place. I mean really, you didn't have to be a rocket scientist to take a look at White's history and realize the man had no integrity or loyalty (or talent as a coach . . . don't make me go through the whole luck of the draw in the 2007 RWC again!). The petulant and spiteful way he dumped the Brumbies and reneged on his contract just because he wasn't considered for the Wallaby role was a disgrace. What was John Smit thinking when he signed Joke for the Sharks?

I say good riddance and let's give the new guy a chance to clean up the stinking mess that Joke White left at the Sharks.

I am not sure whether Jake White is instrumental in Montpellier heading for the play-offs.   After 22 matches played in the Top 14 tournament - the situation basically is that Montpellier is at 7 on the log and there is only four matches left in the Round-Robin stage of that tournament.  The first of those four is  on Saturday.  I think the only thing Montpellier can hope for as a bad slip-up of teams higher on the log and Montpellier winning all four remaining matches.   The chances of that is minimal.
Montpellier has given White a massive budget to bring in new players and he will use that budget.  However, it will only be really clear if White has a positive impact in the case of Montpellier next season  in the French Top 14 tournament and potentially the European Champions Cup next season.
So I am indeed doubtful whether your statement above about White at this stage holds water  and we will have to see how the tournament progresses .   Montpellier is playing Brive on Saturday and should win that game.   Brive is number 11 on the log at present.

They only reason why one would write off the chances of Montpellier, would be that you do not understand the dynamics of the Top 14 competition.
The only way that you could safely have ruled them out was if they were probably about 10 points behind 6th placed Oyonax and they are not. Oyonax is facing Racing Metro (4th on the log) this weekend and RM should win that one, unless of course, they decide to give Goosen another shot at 10.
If RM beat Oyonax and Montpellier beat Brive, Montpellier would (at this stage) be in the play-offs and then anything is possible.

Ceradyne - just answer one simple question.  At this stage the 4th position on the log is Racing Metro with 57 points and 5th on point difference is Toulouse - also at 57 points.  Montpellier is on 50 points.   How would it be possible for a loss by Racing Metro and Toulouse for Montpellier to be in fourth position on the log and thus as stated by you as follows:-
"Montpellier would (at this stage) be in the play-offs and then anything is possible."
They may get nearer to the play-offs - but will not be there yet.   But the dunce can make BS statements - so I am not taking note of his comments as anything serious.

Oh what utter rubbish.....Jake had an average international record and that is a fact....stuff the fact he won a WC......and we know why he did that.......its the overall record that is a measure and his was average to poor.

Saying he is a greater loss than some of the players leaving is an insult.

The guy is an average coach with a bigger ego......I am more than happy to see the back of him.

The Sharks currently are riddled with injuries and suspensions.......at near full strength they would be higher up the table, where in fact right now they are hardly badly placed.

The Brumbies are doing no worse without Jake right now......this Jake thing is a load of bullshit......the guy plays a boring brand of rugby and his selections are piss poor.....its a SA coaching trait.

As you are all aware, I am no fan whatsoever of Jake White, but I have to agree that the players should make their minds up....are they playing for fun or a job ? If it is the former, fine, they do not get paid the ridiculous wages or benefit from the perks associated with the sport these days. If it's the latter, they have to arrive at training when their Coach tells them, as teams all over the world do ( and mine certainly does, some teams here, such as Sale, have a DOR in Steve Diamond, who is at the Club every morning at 6am training before the rest of the chaps arrive. ) so I really don't understand that part of their gripe. Discipline is all part and parcel of the game....and we can see where that has gone badly awry with the team this year.
As for micromanaging and control freakery, no. That is not going to win over many fans, and understandably so.
To keep saying all is well at the Sharks is really not true though, is it ? Things have gone wrong and Smit and Venter need to take the blame. Then the men in charge need to realise that their stupid desire to create a " brand " and obsession with money making is wrecking this Club. Rugby is what it is all about and that happens on the pitch. If you don't have that, you have no stupid " brand " to market, do you ?
They are still a good side but they are falling apart, you don't need a qualification in Sports Psych to see that. And it is sad to see  The supporters deserve better.....but they are always the last thought on anyone's mind these days.

And now I will wait for Saffex to tell me I am talking rubbish and swear at me !!!

The story about the 08:30 issue is absolute crap.   Each coach has a different training methodology and the fact that Jake White wanted to have the players reporting at 08:30 was not an issue at all - they reported at 08:30 and there were no grumbles about it.   The real issue relates to inadequate management, coaching and preferential treatment of players by White - as well as his negative game plan poorly executed by one of his favourites.
The whole story of the article was to put White in the clear and put the blame for what happened on Smit and the players.   The "fun" issue was part of that and that should not even be a consideration.  What should be is that the players should be happy in their playing environment and that would contribute to a  better team spirit.  They were not and that did not at all relate to the kindergarten 08:30 story.
White is not the only one to blame for a negative team spirit - both Smit and Venter had a hand in it.  The issues I raised previously played a serious negative role in the team and in the support base as well.
There is no way that the present scenario at the Sharks is acceptable and some issues as mentioned by me needs serious attention.

Hahaha...."the mess that Jake left behind". This from the same clown that said three weeks ago the Sharks were about to out perform.

The only mess I can see is that  the petulant Sharks fans were finally given everything they asked for, including Jake's departure, the selection of local favourites and an adventurous game plan.

How did that all work out for them

That is simplistic and a total disregard what White did at the Sharks.   He was not to blame alone for the present fiasco - but he caused major player relations damage affecting the team spirit when he was coach and that in itself caused problems that have not been eliminated as yet.
One of the problems is Francois Steyn.  Why White is not making him a contract offer and solve the problem at the Sharks is amazing.   However, one assume that Fransie's previous stint in France was poor enough to stop an offer from Montpellier forthwith.

Moronic what happened here was management 101. Jake tried to introduce a winning culture with modern discipline. The older players didn't like it and thought they had a separate line of communication to Smit. He should have denied them that access and backed Jake....he didn't and deserves the mess he created.

Every manager has been lobbied in that way....the smart ones try to figure out whether there is a legitimate issue before giving these whispers any credence. John tried to be popular....everybody ran to the press to denigrate Jake.

They made their own bed and are reaping the nightmare. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys.

Jake made his own bed by being totally irresponsible in not realizing that he was alienating the players.   He could have done things totally differently - rugby is not a dictatorship - but instead of trying to gain the trust of his players,  he alienated them.
His main problem relationship was with a player that let the team down badly - and that was Steyn.  The latter even hugged him when going off the field.   Most of the players were treated like children and dealt with harshly for under-performance, while Steyn got away with murder.
Steyn on his part lorded it over the players, by threatening to report them to White if they did not submit to his wishes.  The captain was nothing - Steyn everything.
Be it as it may - White left a group of players without any semblance of team spirit - you could not call that collection a team.  With Steyn and White gone - the team started looking better in the CC.   And they did look like a team until injuries and red cards - one by the ego-centric Steyn - got them into deep water.
White instilling anything but fear does not represent  modern discipline.

I grasp that the team is without key players. But some of the key players are missing because they were banned. That has nothing to do with Jake, most likely, but, somewhere along the line, the discipline needs to be sorted out and frustrations need to be dealt with. Because they do not seem as happy as they profess to be. Their body language and manner belies that fact.

Lets see the Sharks were 1 game won and 3 lost  before the game where Stephanie departed....  2 won  and 3  lost before the game where Bismarck and Steyn were red carded (although Frans came back to guide them to a Force victory). When Lambie left they were 3 and 3.

So unless those results are acceptable....I would say they stank up the joint before and after key players weren't available. In fact they haven't done a thing right since Jake left.

Steyn guarding the Sharks to a victory in the Force game is a farce.   Despite the win against the weakest side in the Tournament - the performance of the Sharks were terrible in that game and none was worse than Steyn.  Matter of fact Steyn's inaccurate and aimless kicking  was the reason  for the team being under pressure for such long periods during the match.   His goal kicking was inaccurate and no commentator ever said that Steyn even had a half-decent game that day.   Even newspaper reports afterwards said Steyn should NEVER play at flyhalf again - because he is a serious flop in that position.   However, you are delirious in this case and as per normal the BS as to Steyn is splashed all over the place.
And when Keo comes up with BS about the team - it is not based on the rumour mill - the other issues I raised was all over the papers as well - so it is not the rumour mill talking.   There is so much BS in the KEO article, it is clearly a whitewashing job for his old pal Jake White.
There is no way that White is not guilty of disruption of the team spirit.   There is no way that the ego-centric Steyn did not play a major roll as well.   Steyn is in team relationship a real problem and his ego is huge.   If you watch games and he contributes to points - you would never see any team member in any way show appreciation to him.
There is no way that Smit did not do a reasonable job as well and his first huge mistake was to fire Plumtree.  Plumtree suffered because of a massive injury problem in 2013 - a bigger problem any franchise had to deal with that year.   At times he had to borrow players from the LIons to be able to field a full team in games - the situation was so bad.   He also had to contend with a hugely overweight Steyn who buggered up badly - so badly that he dropped Steyn from the team and said he is no center.   That combination caused Smit to fire him and since then the value of Plumtree was clearly illustrated in the case of Ireland and of the Hurricanes this year.
Smit apparently listened to some advice from his former team mates (inclusive of Steyn) in this regard.   It was crazy to fire a coach who in 2012 took the team to the FINAL OF THE  SUPER 15.    You shouted about White taking the much less injury-affected team to the SEMI-FINAL in 2014, but that is a lot less  than Plumtree achieved in 2012.
Be it as it may - the disruptions that followed the management of the Sharks team -
*   caused by the changing of the coaching staff;*   the negative impact of Smit in the management of the team;*   the petty-mindedness and favouritism shown by White and the impact of a negative game plan;*   the deficiency of White to really build up a Sharks squad to cater for player deficiencies due to under-performance;  and*   the consequential negative impact on the team spirit
are the main reasons for the present disastrous performances of the Sharks.
I had high hopes for White when he was appointed as coach - but became seriously disillusioned after watching the first few games.  It was clear that White - as was the case in 2007 and in the case of the Brumbies - was clueless about backline coaching and the Sharks were stuck with a predictable kicking game plan that could ultimately only lead to disaster.  If the kicking was in any way strategic it would have helped - but it was inaccurate and aimless.
You said that Smit listened to the senior players when he fired White - but there never was any real indication of that.   Smit evaluated the performance record of players and unlike you saw the real results which led to problems at the Sharks.  He identified the fact that Steyn's performance was sub-par and disrupting  team performance and that White was causing team problems by showing favouritism to Steyn, while blaming other team members for deficiencies in matches.   This was clear in the case of Steyn's release from the squad to play in Japan - if he was so essential for the team as a whole, the Sharks would not have released him from his contract.
Be it as it may - there is no way that  White is completely innocent from what happened to the Sharks and the impact is still felt.
