RYAN VREDE of Keo writes the Sharks are one of the few sides that exhibit the capacity to ask telling questions of the Stormers.

The magnitude of the occasion and the odds the Sharks overcame undoubtedly made their victory over the Reds at the weekend the best of their campaign. However, their path to the quarter-final was marked by some excellent showings, none more so than the 25-20 defeat of the Stormers at Kings Park in May.

The scoreline suggests a close encounter, but the Sharks were completely dominant for much of it, with the most notable feature of the performance the sustained accuracy in execution of key aspects of their game plan. Few sides have been able to trouble the Stormers defensively in the manner the Sharks did, and only the Rebels have also scored three tries against the Cape side in their league-phase matches. (take what comfort ye may sharkies!)

The potency of their attack then will be a source of inspiration ahead of Saturday’s semi-final. Their launch platform was established through an industrious and physical gainline onslaught. Willem Alberts was prominent and effective with ball in hand, named Man of the Match for his unfailing ability to get over the advantage line. Their charge in this regard was amplified by the efforts of Bismarck du Plessis, Beast Mtawarira and Marcell Coetzee, among others. (Yes indeed we only have Bekker as a Bok so there is no hope - hahahahahahahahaha - just hope Vermuelen is ready)

Of particular interest will be to see whether Alberts is restored to the back row after the Sharks were forced to deploy him at lock in Brisbane. He excelled in the position in the aforementioned match and the one many respected rugby men, including Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer, feel he is best suited to. The Sharks, however, may be reluctant to tamper with their back row after the trio’s showing against the Reds. But with the Stormers demanding a more direct approach than the one they implemented against the Reds, Alberts may well be named at blindside flank, with either Coetzee or Ryan Kankowski dropping to the bench.

The Sharks’ excellence in the Durban showdown extended to their defensive resolve and, most pertinently, their discipline in that facet of play. The Stormers have engineered their ascent to the semi-finals primarily through pressure-creating phase play, with their goal-kickers then building their lead through penalties from the infringements they’ve forced. The Sharks cut them off at the source and indeed also managed to restrict them in the first meeting at Newlands, won 15-12 by the Stormers thanks to a 78th minute Peter Grant penalty.

Taxing travel and their almighty physical effort against the Reds means fatigue will be the Sharks’ biggest obstacle in their bid to replicate their success against the Stormers. There is no question they have the personnel and tactical intelligence. Whether they can rouse themselves to recapture the elements that facilitated their previous victory remains to be seen.

Aha at last some common sense and recognition its not going to be easy for the Sharkies.

Go Stormers lets show these sharkies what a brick wall can do. Then when they are concussed lets score a few tries ourselves. If Vermulen is fit he and Elstadt will flatten ou Alberts so bear that in mind. Will Alberts make it to half time is the question - hahahahahaha

Go MIghty Stormers time to teach sharkies who top dogs are!   An easy win agains the Reds is being hailed to the high heavens.   Time for some perespective to prevail.

Hahahhaha Beeno kicks off the groet brag I think they call it. And no snapster I am not afrikaans as I have told you more than once dumbo. Oops Lady Becs about to arrive?

I can see the Sharks ripping through that Stormers defence, and all they need is a lead, Stormers aren't chasers.

It is going to be very though for the Sharks, there is a lot of traveling involved and I am sure even though they are home they will all be tired after the travel.

We will see how long the season has really been now for the boys.

I am really looking forward to these to matches, there previous match ups have been by far my games of the season so far. Now to have them playing each other again in the semi's, I couldn't be happier.

Epic weekend of rugby ahead!

it will be the battles of the game patterns but i would have to agree with gareth the sharks can score points just as the stormers cant chase down a game. if the game is close in the 2de half then the stormers can take it. if the sharks are ahead but more than 10 odd points than the limp penile unerect attack of the stormers wil lay down like malema after his MOET champers enraged wedding afterparty

i think the sharks have what it takes to beat the stormers too, but im wondering how they are coping with the travel issues???

i also think that alberts and should play at lock again, kankowski, daniels, coetzee and alberts are a massive handful for any team and should one not be playing at his best, u still have 3 more form loosies ready to roll.
going up against bekker and ezebeth is tough enough by international standards, so bismarck and bressler should look to negate their huge lineout advantage with smarts, short line outs and throws to the very front or back, etc.

also is lambie back??? michilak played very well on sat, so if lambies fit, i would have him at 15 and levae freddy at 10.

Like the bulle almost every sharks forward is a Bok. Bekker is our sole representative bokwise.

But lets see. Hopefully Vermuelen is back and on song as he is the premier no 8 in world rugby - a 116 kg 80 minute goer who puts in the hard graft and is massively influential.

The Stormers pack will in all likelihood (even sans the world class Burger) still prove to be a handfull for the sharks. If they get on top we will most likely win the game.

Sharkies beware of the Mighty Stormers - nemesis of the sharkies!

I think the Sharks are actually the better side, but I really hope they don't win. If they do beat the Stormers they have to travel all the way back to NZ and doing that three times in three weeks is just too much. If that does happen they will effectively hand the trophy to either the Crusaders or the Chiefs.

For that reason alone...go Stormers!!!!

The Sharks are gonna smash the Stormpies this weekend. Bismarck, Beast,  Alberts, Coetzee, Kanko and Daniels....too much power and class. Please leave Meyer Bosman out the 22, he's way past his sell-by date.

Too much fire-power out wide with JP and Mvovo. Classy centres in Jordaan and Whitehead plus Ludik penetrating from the back. Sharks on fire and will win this weekend. Problem will be the travel back to New Zealand...will be much to much for any team.

Now listen here Green and fellow travellers lets be sensible about all this.

Read what Plumtree says:

Unsurprisingly, Plumtree was speaking up the quality of the Stormers when he returned to Durban from Australia, and while he does tend to do that, he was doing it in private after the recent clash at Mr Kings Price, where the Sharks won more comfortably than the five point margin would suggest but Plumtree expressed great admiration for the Stormers’ refusal to “go away”. They were playing with a severely depleted team and came back from a 25-6 deficit to eventually lose 25-20, dominating the second half as much on the field as they did on the scoreboard.

At the time Plumtree said he wouldn’t like to have to go to Cape Town to play the Stormers in a playoff, and he was sticking to the line of high respect when he spoke to Durban based reporters on Monday.

I have really admired the Stormers this season.(ME TOO) They’ve performed so consistently and finished on the top of the South African conference as well as the overall log. They very rarely lose at home, and it will be a huge challenge for us. I think the last time we beat them at Newlands was 2007 (it was actually 2009). They have been sitting back waiting while we are returning from some travel.

we are still missing two key players which makes thsi a severely depleted team but there is still some hope re vermuelen getting some game time but how goodwill he be after all this time off.

Nevertheless we can still beat the sharkies.  With vermuelen and Schalk it would be NO CONTEST. Hahahahahaha food for thought sharkies - but please no sleepless nights now.

Man this is going to be one tough game. If the Sharks score early and build up a 12+ lead, I don't think the Stormers can play catch up then. If the Stormers win I will be backing them to win their maiden Super Rugby trophy.

One thing is for sure goodluck to both teams, but i will scream for the black and white come this saturday. (Sorry Beeno)

Beeno, the difference between the Stormpies and Sharkies at the moment, is attack. The Sharks know how to get their backline into the game, whereas the Stormpies have JDV at 12 and that is where the problem is...he can't get a piss up in a brewery going, let alone a top class backline.

Yeah, I know you gonna say defence wins knock out games, and I agree, that's why the Sharks have a chance to win. Sharks match the Stormpies in defence, difference here is the Sharks can score tries.

Great matchups:

Bismarck  vs  Liebenberg

Alberts  vs  Etzebeth

Keegan/Coetzee/Kanko  vs Kolisi/Eldstadt/Fourie

Vermeulen will add more abrasion to the loose trio, but will he be at his best just coming back without a warm-up game??? Of course, that's if he's fit.

JP  vs  Habana

Jordaan  vs  DeJongh

Ludik  vs  Pieterson

Mvovo  vs  Aplon

Mouth-watering....can't wait.

Green I am not expecting fireworks it could be a dull game with the Stormers strangling the life out of the sharks.

As long as we win I dont mind. Its late in the day to expect a change but hopefully there will be more flair next year.

Yes I too am a bit concerend about vermulen who is only right now starting to take contact. This is not good. To me if you have been out that long you need to play a few much easier games before what is really test level rugby.

Deon Fourie is  very underated as a loose forward. Look at what he does and to me he is better than even Brussouw - very strong and not moved off the ball and has real pace. Gets down low and drives the ball up. Excellent technique that bigger units in SA need to start working at. How often dont you hear commentators saying (eg bulle versus crusaders) he has gone ifar too high. With Deon and Kolisi we have a nice mobile pack with some grunt.

Without Burger and Vemuelen we need a bit of flair as we might not necessarily dominate enough at foward. With them you simply beat the opposition into submission. As I said a full Stormers pack is formidable and will dominate any pack in this competition.

For those who appreciate a hard fought match it will be a great one to watch. If you love tries and fancy stuff it may not be a spectacle - but who knows.

I love the utter nonsense on this thread....Whitehead and Jordaan better than Jean and de Jongh.....JP betterthan Habana....Mvovo more dangerous than Aplon.....Alberts and no name better than Etzebeth and and Bekker....Freddie better than Grant..

I see a clear edge for the Sharks at loosie and front row.  The Stormers have better backs and a superior second row. It's close on the comparisons.

So it gets down to game plans....and the Stormers lead with defence, dangerous counter attack and the unerring boot of Grant. The Sharks by contrast lead with physicality.....match that and they are toothless.

The Moz prediction. The Stormers will squeeze the life out of the Sharks' weakness at half back.....and Grant will boot them to victory.

Both teams have formiddable packs, but Sharks have line-breaking carriers in Alberts and Coetzee. They have pace and fire-power with inform Kanko and Keegan. Our scrummie will be fine when the our pack give him all the time he needs with their power play.

Grant will be under pressure and it will be a good litmus test for him regarding the Bok 10 jersey. Let's see if he can cope with a good test-like defence the Sharkies will throw at him.

Yeah, Moz, the game will be huge and utterly fisical, but IMO the Sharks have the flair to crack the Stormpies open just enough to beat them.

in the front row the sharks are the best in the comp no doubt. second row the stormers are potent. the lose trio can go either way but for pure attacking skills and flair the human wrecking ball alberts tips it for me with his offloads in the tackle. at 9 both teams are rubbish sorry to say. at 10 grant is robotic where freddie is more than last season permanently on song. the centers the stormers can take it only if they can get the ball or dont stuff it up and in the back 3 my money is on the sharks again. even stevens but the cohesion and flair of the sharks are light years better than the stormers. plus the sharks has the by far the biggest mental advantage seeing they tend to lift themselves as where the stormers just some times just tend to not pitch up dare i say "like the bulls last week" aka choke.

great game on the weekend cant wait
