I'm inclined to think so. A rugby game seems to zip by in the blink of an eye. Obviously there is significant fatigue  involved....but less than there used to be now we have so many stoppages and a bench of substitutes. And soccer players run up to nine miles in a game....that's pretty tiring.

There is no particular reason for forty minutes in a half. Five minutes may not seem a lot. But adding  a bit more than 10 per cent to the game will make for a clearer winner.
Rugby players are professionals now....run a little more.

I am not sure whether that would be justified - since breaks in play are not counted as actual time played.  In fact any injury or review breaks are not counted as game time - the clock stops in that event.   Most games in actual being on the field of play is consequently much longer than the 40 minutes actual playing time taking place.   When you actually watch game with breaks it could in many games being nearer to 50 minutes players are on the field of play than 40 minutes.
In fact if you actually time the games from kick-off to blowing for half time it is frequently roundabout 45 minutes before the whistle for half-time is blown and the same applies to second halfs in matches.
However an addition by 10 minutes should be done on a professional basis and take due regard to the interests of the players as well.   Unlike soccer rugby involves hard graft by players up front and tackling of players which are very exhausting - not only running.

80 mins is just fine. You can't compare soccer with rugby, soccer requires players to be more running fit, but it is not nearly as physical as rugby. I agree rugby matches go by in a flash, but these boys are already being over played, no point adding to the problem. As far as results go, it will make no difference, in the extra 10 minutes, either team could benefit and score, as they could in normal time.
Leave it as is.

Well judging the way the Bokke run outa puff in the last quarter we might be better off with the status quo & more substitutes .

I watched the old 2004 Tri-Nations game on the weekend against the All Blacks where we came back from 20-5 down and ran in three quick tries in the last quarter
You are correct blob, we need those days back

Original comment obviously written by someone who has never played the game.
Just think what would happen to the old timers like "Visitor Misfield" if the time was extended.
I know he would last the 90 minutes as he coasts on the field mostly.
Leave things as they are.
Suggest you have 40 winks prior to watching the game as opposed to sleeping during the game.

Fartur your logic is a mess. Firstly you warn about what would happen to Matfield  if the time was extended. Then you tell us he'll be fine as he coasts. Two contradictory statements....or couldn't you remember the first one when you emitted the second?

Lowlife has responded - so what can you say about old Ouma Victoria which will not result in absolute craziness on his part.  He  is too dim to realize that Missfield, if he has to perform like any other player, would last less than 30 minutes in a match.  Coasting along loafing in his normal style  while moonlighting in the backline the passenger could last 90 minutes.

Yes, but in fairness to preach & practice the same thing seems a little repetitive & boring .
