So how were Stepfontein and Kriel

Kriel was a non-entity as far as I can tell. He only logged 4 points on fantasy rugby & good backs get at least 10. Probably didn't get any ball as Pollard wasn't playing as we all know & his replacement was not up to it. Same for serfontein - the only time the get a mention is in the team listing at the end of article.

To be frank - both Kriel and Serfontein got no balls from the Morne Steyn clone Brummer and they were left with only one task and that was to defend.  Bad news insofar as they are concerned.

Ah I get it, they weren't much good but it was Morne Steyn's fault  

 At the end of the first half bulls had 55 carries for 166 meters, Serf had 3 caries for 2 meters gained, he made 5 tackles. Kriel was taken off at the 56 minute mark.

 Ag foeitog - can you really misread what I wrote so badly.  It was the clone of Morne - Brummer - playing at flyhalf who destroyed the Bulls backline and Paige was also no good at scrummie.  Centers can only perform if they get balls to play with and the bulls centers di d not get anything of note,  The Bulls halfbacks was seriously defective and that had a detrimental affect on all their backline players.

Also ... that quota scrummie selected over Faff for last years WC ... single handedly lost the match for the Bulls. Paige is as useless as they come. If the Bulls don't wake up and get rid of this chump they'll be serious contenders for the wooden spoon this year.

Stop talking like that - you are talking about the future Springbok halfback combination of Jantjies and Paige here - we will have to live with mediocrity as a norm.     

I think the SA backline of the future will look like this:-
15  Kolbe14  Ulengo13  De Jongh12  Mnisi11  Senatla10  Jantjies  9  Paige  Of the above there were 5 players who started in the games this weekend and all five were mediocre or poor. 
One more player of colour needed to get the polticos satisfied and that would be Beast.
I can see some ugly losses with that combination as a backline - but that would not be important for Hoskins and Coetzee - what is important is to satisfy the politicos of the ANC.   They will have to get used to play in front of empty stadiums and I can foresee that some of the Bok players will say - we do not want to play in the team and just refuse selection and ask for release from their contracts so as to go and play overseas.         
 

Serf looked good.....was nice to see him looking to beat defenders instead of taking contact as was the instruction under Ludeke. Kriel got very little ball, but looked to use his dazzling feet to make something from nothing.

Why the Bulls are playing useless Brummer at 10 is beyond me.....another Morne, devoid of attacking skills......pedestrian, incapable of getting his backs away.

 Having seen the game now, I can answer my own question. They were inept in the case of Stepfontein.....and totally clueless in the case of Kriel. De Jongh was by far the best centre on the park.
Perhaps a top backline coach can get Allende to be an effective centre....defend securely ....take the ball at pace rather than tractor through a few tackles and die with the ball like a forward.
But Kriel and Step are lost causes. It was comical watching Step trying to take the outside gap when he has the pace of a loose forward. And Kriel did the impossible....make JJ look good. He simply has no idea how to get involved.

Moffie the only thing de Jongh did was get smashed by Serf and concede 3 turnovers
1 defender beaten in 41m gained tells me he did stuff all other than run in space with no-one to beat
Kriel on the otherhand beat 2 defenders in only 4 runs

 De Jongh in the Bok Barometer....once again Vetsak you are hallucinating.

 On what was De Jongh in the Bok barometer?   He was playing at 12 - where the other 12's were who?  Esterhuizen, Small-Smith, Mnisi, and the Kings dummy.  If he could be that againsy 4 no-name players it is fine in a small context.  If he was up against players like Venter and Vorster - he would be nowhere near being in that barometer.  
Granted Serfontein was below-par on Saturday, the other candidates were nothing to comp[are with.
Granted your argument may be that De Jongh is a 13 and only playing 12 until De Allende returns.   He should have played at 13 - he was nowhere either because Jordaan and Venter were so much better than the other 13's  - both of whom scored tries and was critical in scoring of other tries by their team.   
De Jongh has been such a huge disappointment in the past no serious person can consider him being anywhere near selection.   Just remember the 2012 test - where he went AWOL during the Twickenham test.  No wonder he was dropped from contention afterwards - he was too poor to be considered.        

 My argument is de Jongh is a competent centre and a dangerous runner in space. That doesn't mean he is an answer to our test centre needs. I agree he probably isn't big enough against the top few teams, certainly at 12. But he is a lot better than Kriel or Stepfontein

 Mozart it is always unwise to take on game and then make a statement on a player.  It is way to early to say that De Jongh is a better center than Kriel and Serfontein.  He never was in the past - why should he become one now based on one game only?
