The spritely faced juveniles had a runaway victory against Japan.  The problem was with the tired old men in the SA team and the top of that list is useless and trouble-making Matfield.   They all looked their age in the game and the Japanese showed them up badly.
I give that Springbok team about a 30% chance to beat the Samoans - the only way would be to bench Matfield and De Villiers after 20 minutes at the utmost.

The only forward with a decent game was De Jager.  Matfield looked his age and contributed zero bar on some weak tackles when moonlighting in the backline.  Burger tried hard - but made a string of errors and for you he was the best forward.
Pienaar was sH!t poor and Kirchner clueless - so what did they achieve?       

Is it? You said if we select Lambie we WILL score lots of tries and win the World Cup. You said Steph is the real deal and a power forward. You also punted Kriel as well as Mvovo. Scotland thrashed the Japanese team- which raises question if even Scotland are now a threat. They are good spoilers at the breakdown especially with the Northern Hemisphere 

 What you also fail to take into account is that Japan had a four day turn around after playing out of their skins, Scotland were fit and fresh going into the match.Japan also suffered some injuries to key players during the match and that was telling. 
At half time, the score was very close. Japan ran out of steam, Scotland were not spectacular. They capitalised on the circumstances.

The world cup lasts six weeks. Teams are not expected to be fit over these six weeks.
Under these circumstances, the world cup is split into two stages.

The first stage runs grossly over the first three weeks (it might end to the last group stage match if this match is a decider match)

The first stage serves to picture rugby as a global sport. It is used to expand the rugby base business.

The second stage roughly starts from the quarter finals and determines the world cup winner.

To be a winner, teams must perform well. It is not enough: teams must also carry financial potential.
This last point disqualifies the likes of Fidji, Tonga or Samoa to be contenders. No matter how good they are, the financial incentives to exclude them before they form a dreaded Samoa-Tonga final event that wont put many people behind their screen are too strong.
Much less than a NZ SA finale event.

It means that the candidates to seats for the second stage are already known.
In Japan hosted world cup, Japan will be.

Teams that are candidates to seats in the second stage are not expected to perform during the first stage.
The first stage is there to provide the illusion of rugby as a world sport.

The more a team progresses toward the final event, the more anecdoctical their performances in the first stage turn.
