There are two weird selections - Du Plessis as prop and Alberts.   Meyer said if Alberts did not play this week he would have been gone from the squad.   Jannie flopped badly in scrumming thus far - but I think Meyer does not see him as a bench player and can replace him early if he flops again.

Well, they finally selected the two locks many were crowing about. Against Oz they should do ok.
This must be what Meyer rates as the best available side as the game this weekend is critical & Oz are no slouches. We will get some answers about the defensive abilities of de Allende and Kriel. They can bring is Serfontein if things really go badly.
Captain is a bit of a surprise as Vermeulen & Burger are playing.

Nothing surprising to me. I would have picked the same team, but would have had Morne and Paige on  the bench ahead of Jan and Pienaar only because after this match only USA remains.

Well judging by Meyer's selection of captain it confirms all the rumors that circulated around the time when Meyer was about to select a captain a few years back.
Fourie du Preez was and is his first choice as captain.
Also surprised that Paige was not considered or selected on the bench as scum-half.I would be surprised if he is not selected for the Eagles game.
What are the rules regarding players who do not play in the opening round with respect to the next round in WC rugby?
This team should have no issues handling the Scots but I would rather have had Strauss and Malherbe in the starting team.
Jannie is way past his best and Bizzy is a card waiting to happen unfortunately.

Finally at long last its starting to look like a real side......sadly we are getting there no thanks to the coach, but thanks to injuries.

Great centre and lock pair

Pity about the retention of Jannie and Louw

You must not have known - back in 2012 Meyer's first idea was to get Du Preez as captain.  His second choice was Matfield.  Du Preez was injured at the time and declined and Matfield was not convinced that he would like to start playing rugby again after his announced retirement.   De Villiers was only Meyer's THIRD choice as captain.
Meyer never changes his ideas and in this case he went back to his first choice also because Matfield was injured in any event - so not really surprised at all.

Arthur J, you are right, it's been a long day. The Poms will have to deal with Oz this weekend.
Haven't seen enough of the Scots to know if they will test the centers but if they wear their kilts they will at least surprise them

Not surprised by FdP as captain. I would have preferred Thor, but prefer FdP to Scalla.

FdP and SB are the best of friens as well, so no clash of ego's expected. I'm happy enough eith the choice.

Looks like a decent team. FDP and Willie LeRoux are the brains of the operation. FDP seems to understand the gameplan better than Meyer so no issue with him being the captain

Meyer' s best selection thus far. Perhaps Malherbe to start. perhaps Burger as Captain. No massive blunders. Meyer expect tough battle with Scots pack. Hope Allende and Kriel are fully fit. This is.much better. sanity is returning! How disappointing for the three musketeers.

Malherbe or Coenie ahead of Jannie. Move Schalk to 6 and play PSDT at 7 and all will be well....well almost.

I asked Mozart elsewhere whether he - like his fellow Musketeer is predicting a loss by the Springboks on Saturday - I somehow thinks he would not respond.   Ceradunce is too stupid to respond to anything in any event.

The team is looking much better. Good mix of youth and experience.
The scots are playing some fantastic rugby and I would not drop my guard against them. The Japs has shown the way of how to play against SA and i think they will target Bismarck, Jannie and Estebeth for milking penalties or even carded. The Du Pleases brothers really loses their heads when things don't go their way.
Malherbe should have started, he has been massive at tight head, no idea why we have Coenie around, they should send him back as he pretty much single handedly gave the Japs the win.
No idea what alberts is still doing their. Would have done much better with kolisi on the bench or even having Coetzee in the squad.
The scots are really competitive on the ground so need to look out for penalties. They are also good at getting their line breaks. Need to keep it tight against them and make sure that we can dominate them through the maul. I would also deploy some pick and drives to keep them from fanning out and then picking up isolated runners. No point in shifting it wide to early. Few high bombs could help too.

Thank goodness Coenie is NOT playing as he cant scrum. It will be interesting to see if Alberts can contribute.
This is the nearest we have got to getting it right for along time.Players like Kitshoff and marcell Coetzee could ahve made the match 23. Quibles there may be about the front row. Meyer thinks jannie can anchor the scrum against the Wiley scots. Its a good pack close to being a great pack. (More work ethic from the props needed)
backline is about as good as we can field. Some brain there and creativity.
Lets hope there are no further injuries as is this side gels we could go places.
Time to give the wee haggis bashers a very hard time. At last we have a tight five! Three warrior loose forwards!! A backline that can attack with a general in Fourie.
Dr Moz, DF and cerudunce windpomp  must wo nder why all this is happening - they are so confused right now!

you've been very lucky with the injuries,...... may be the only team in the world to which injuries strengthen instead of weaken.
Now without Matfield and JdV the boks have some chances of beating the Scottish,.... though the team could be improved in many ways (Alberts, Jannie, Louw,...) it's a competitive team.
But Scotland are going to be a tough rival,..... they've been so in the last matches against the boks,.... their forward pack can match boks' set pieces and when this happens the boks have many dificulties to develop their game.
The breakdown battle will be crucial,..... very interesting game

Good team.

Tight five is fine.

Loosies are OK bar one, namely Flo, but I presume Meyer stayed with him because of the excellent work he is doing in the rucks and mauls. He disappears in those situations (just look at the position of the rest of the team during those situations and you will not see Flo anywhere) and gets buried where he is doing the donkey work - something Kolisi or Alberts will never ever do.

My problem with Flo is with scrums. He gives no assistance to his prop. Schalk is about the only loosie who does this.

Thor is rapidly regaining his old superior form and should be able to contain Josh Strauss who used to be an excellent player for the Lions.

The backline is fine.

We will just have to wait and see how well FdP does as captain. I guess Meyer was not prepared to threaten the harmony in the team by making a choice between Schalk (Jean's room mate on the tour), Thor, Bismarck or Adriaan Strauss.

I like this team a lot, there's nothing I would outright change. If Lood/Etzebeth work, then imagine the luxury of bringing Matfield on in the last 20 minutes of knockout games with all his experience.
It will be interesting to see what Alberts has left.

Harsh on Strauss to be dropped, he played well vs Samoa. Nyakane (I think more of him as a player every time I see him play) too.
No complaints with Du Preez as skipper, even though Schalk would have been my choice.

Very good team, as most have mentioned the Louw and Jannie issue. No real alternatives to achieve a well balanced pack. Thank God Coenie's not there. absolutely useless. Let's see what fat Alberts has.Backline run on and bench is good.

Agreed Blikkies, Louw is the weak link.....never been a true fetcher and has done nothing of note for some time now. Very over rated player......we have at least 5 better options at 6. But clueless Meyer thinks he is our best 6 - go figure

Not sure why the average Jannie was retained, Malherbe was so much better when he came on as he always is.

Any of you SA blogger know why Arno Botha not getting a look in? Unless he is overseas now. Always thought he was big, strong, good ball carrier. Could be an asset for the boks, even as lock cover.

Meyer did not select him.....he is playing really well for the Bulls right now in the CC

He is a great player..........better than any of the WC squad loosies other than Vermeulen

He is not big enough to cover lock
