When we were playing in the All Blacks half- we got lots of penalties.
In the first half the Boks looked the better team, but the All Blacks territory kicking was better.
Given that the final score was so close, I think the biggest factor in the loss was Pollard's kicking game.
Other than of course the overuse of the usual first receiver crashball, Schalk was poor in this regard. He is no longer a force in contact and should probably hang up his Springbok boots).
The All Blacks tried to break the defence in the first half- but other than the one try- the defence was holding tight. The All Blacks then made some good field kicks which pushed pack backwards.
They varied their play by kicking behind the rush defence. They also kicked for territory

sharkbok with all due respect we cannot really lay blame at players feet as they were just acting on instructions from meyer and co.....the aimless kicking one dimensional attacking display ext is not what wins rwc games.....its been proven over and over yet here we sit in 2015 and we keep on harping on about players......there are merely a product of a now arcanic system that does not allow them to place into space.
i saw passes go above players heads behind them too far in front of them... i see front rankers get better ball on attack than the flyhalf....its pure madness
the whole construct of the sa playing style is fundamentally flawed in its conception and execution

The other reason for the loss was reverting to 10 man rugby with Schalk at flyhalf. Otherwise known as the Meyer/SA coach game plan.
Players who contributed to the Loss.
Jannie- utterly useless. When he came on the scrum fell apart. Malherbe is a much better player- and should have stayed on.
Schalk- no longer a force in contact. Either he plays more as a link- or else Alberts should have played.
Lood- missed a routine tackle for the first half try
. Pollard- he needs to improve his tactical kicking or he could find himself playing at inside centre
Kriel- the ball never made it down the backline- so none of the outside backs got the ball.
Habana- Left his wing, and Lood missed the tackle. 10 minutes in the bin.
Willie LeRoux. The Springbok game 10 man game plan is not suiting him.

no worries sharkbok
it just pains me to see the type of talent we have being p i s s e d away by a style of rugby that just does not belong.
meyer needs to go time for us to take this core team and build for 2019 playing a pattern of play we play week in and week out uptempo rugby based on skillsets and execution there off.
this mindless drivel is destroying the sa rugby legacy
the great rivalry is nothing more a sign of respect of our past as we have not won like 1 odd game in 5 years or something stupid like that.
sa rugby needs to catch a wakeup before its too late for us

South African teams rarely attack from within their own half- other than the occasional counter. We need to play more than 50% of the game in the opponents half.
When we were doing this, the penalties were flowing. When FDP kicking game fell apart in the 2nd half, we lost the territory battle.

One of the biggest issue was caused by Matfield.1. Had a Penalty reversed, resulting in an attacking position becoming a major defensive one (lost 40m).2. Call himself at a critical line-out and lost the line-out.3. Spilled the ball in his own 22.
With that type of contribution from any player in a WC semi u are not going to win now are u.

Well I said earlier in the tournament that if we want to play a kicking game, Pollard is not the flyhalf for that. He is a very physical tackler and advantage line attacker, but his tactical kicking has been consistently poor.

As in many of Meyer's picks, Pollard showed himself up as just another failure at test level.
Meyer certainly knows how to pick them.

Pollard is hardly a test failure - he's been one of our better players all tournament and he's made our flyhalf channel near impenetrable on defense, plus he slotted all his goals in a World Cup semi so he doesn't lack BMT. His kicking out of hand is below standard though, so if that's the game you expect your flyhalf to bring, obviously there will be problems.

Good stats brycy & good point. Burger was cannon fodder & not allowed to use his abilities as link man. Same for other players.
Mayfield was a bit of a disaster though

SB - spot on, and the #1 reason we lost that game. Can't blame our game plan - even though it was poorly executed it got us to within 2 points of the best team in the world. Don't like the game plan, change the rules of the game.
We used to be the best in the world at tactical kicking - territorial and contestable. Pollard, LeRoux and even at times FDP were just not good enough. Poorly weighted, poorly directed kicks just putting us back under pressure.
How many times would we only get 20-25m from a penalty kick? Whereas Carter pegged it deep almost every time.

The worst penalty kick was the Lambie one where he gained about 15 metres to just outside the 22, whereas a bold kick should have got us within 10 metres of the line for a maul chance ....safety first/opportunity lost.
