The final eight included 3 Americans, three South Afticans and two Aussies. In the end Speith was mentally strong enough to get the job done...this kid is a competitor.
Well done to Louis whose 29 on the back nine ties the 120 year record in the US Open. He beat the field by 6 shots in the last three rounds, but his opening 77 did too much damage. He has now come really close at Augusta and in the US Open.
Bad luck to Grace, by far the least pedigreed of those in contention, but he hung in tough until he unfortunately pressed on a 3 wood on 16. Schwartzel also came back from the dead with a fine final round.
Dustin Johnson may not ever win a major after this. A series of weak putts doomed his challenge, despite some stellar driving. And where does Jason Day's career go after his mysterious ailment. So many plots in this one....the Open at St Andrews will be eagerly anticipated. No doubt Rory will be taking note of Speith and be keen to wrest back the initiative.
