How this incompetent, defensive man gets a blow in the S15 is a mystery. But clearly the Tahs were were the preferred knights of Rohan yesterday. For once Mallett got it right.

On the referees

'The only highlight for South Africa this weekend was the performance from our referees. Jaco Peyper and Stuart Berry were absolutely objective and they refereed both games very fairly unlike Rohan Hoffmann for the Sharks this morning, who was absolutely shocking. And it's not the first time he's been shocking. He was hopeless in the match between the Stormers and the Hurricanes where he apologised but he cost the Stormers 14 points. So he needs to retire.

I would like to wait and see what Kaplan says about Hoffman - I think he would not be kind in this case.

By the way - Hoffman has been shockingly poor in all the matches he reffed this year and I think after a season of bungling he should be removed.

The answer to this poor reffing we see week in/ week out is to give each team three appeals to the video ref....with refills if the appeals are successful. It fixed line calling in tennis...it will force these incompetent refs off the circuit and force the remainder to call it honestly.

Towards the end of the 1st Half, the Sharks Captain asked if the Penalty kick for touch would signal the end of the half, he replied YES and then he called for a lineout. The Tahs were just too embarrassed to jump and contest. When questioned by the Sharks captain he mumbled some thing and ran off.

I agree with the captain appeals mechanism you mention - but would be of the opinion that a successful appeal should not reduce the number of appeals available to the captain.   Incidentally the appeals mechanism in cricket is the same and has been successfully employed in cricket as well.
The problem is it can only work if the TV Monitors/referees are honest and make value decisions - some of the TV referee decisions this year was basically beating the incompetence of the on-field referee.

mmmm Giving the Local Stadium TV crew free reign is a bad idea. Too much bias against visiting teams and deleting of scenes featuring foul play by local team. A certain TestMatch last year in the Republic comes to mind.

That is not the point - giving captains an appeal is not "giving the local TV crews a free reign".   That incident in the test last year represented illegal/dangerous play, but I agree the way it was handled was not handled correctly.   However, it is not the only case that type of thing happened - what about another incident in the same series, where preceding a try scored Louw's head was nearly taken off by McCaw and Louw was out for months afterwards injured as a result of seriously illegal/dangerous play.

There needs to be an appeal system. However to be fair to Rohan he is a mere novice compared to bryce lawrence - nz ref of the year!
Mistakes are one thing but if the mistakes are made against one side that is not simply mistakes. The call re the halftime kick gave the game away.
Sadly, all indications are that the get the J arpy campaign is alive and well and thriving down under.
