The Problems in Selection faced by Meyer

There were four players that were first choice or at least selections by Meyer and they now are problem cases:- 
Jacque Fourie
Meyer pleaded with Fourie to return to test rugby in 2013.  When he did return in November 2013 it was clear that Fourie was below standard as a result of loss of pace and that he was a dead loss in attacking play and made the tackles he could manage to get to - but nothing else.  
Despite it being clear that Fourie by 2013 has already lost his mojo Meyer pleaded with him to return to play international rugby.  Fourie decided in November 2014 that he would not play any test rugby in future - but Meyer went back to him and pleaded with him to change his mind.  He was then invited to join the Springbok training camp in June 2015.   He arrived at the camp in a shocking physical condition and after a week it was clear that there was no chance of him getting fit enough to play in the WC if he stays on at the camp.  Since he was inhibiting the training programmes of all players - he was sent back to his Club.
The problem is that the Fourie issue over a period of two years has delayed the development of local players to gain experience in the no 13 position.
Morne Steyn
Since June last year Steyn played three tests and came from the bench twice.  His performance -
*   in the first two tests he started in he was barely average and in some respects poor;
*   in the two matches he played in from the bench he made serious mistakes that could have cost the Springboks dearly in winning those two matches; and
*   in the Perth cost he was disastrously poor.
Steyn consequently played no tests since the Perth test last year.  He was in the squad of the Springboks throughout - but never played.  Now the latest news is that he will not be going to Argentina as the result of his wife giving birth to a second son soon.  Everybody would wish his wife well and obviously extend their best wishes to the family.
However, it is leaving the flyhalf selection in serious jeopardy.  Steyn never played a single test since September last year - when his poor performance in that test that resulted in him effectively being out of contention for test selection.  Is he going to be selected "blind" as part of the WC squad with nothing but questionable performance in tests over a 14 month period?   This is going to present a problem as to selection.
Willem Alberts
Alberts has not played a single test since last year in June.   In that match he produced near to zero and was injured with the result that he only played in 3 Super 15 matches this year.  In none of the three matches he was really successful - matter of fact he was poor.
He was called up to the June training camp and was up to last week on the injury list.  He is apparently available - but was not selected to play in the test this coming Saturday and unlikely to make th grade for next week as well.
His selection to the squad with no test experience since last year and poor performances in Super 15 should not even be a consideration.
Victor Matfield
He was used in all tests last year, but was never really convincing - his problem was that he makes zero contribution to Tight 5 play - since he has no grunt.  He was frequently missing from mauls and made some weak tackles while standing around the mauls.  His line-out takes got less and less and he fouled up two critical tests against the AB's last year.
In Super 15 this year Matfield was rested regularly in an obvious attempt to ensure eh is not exposed to injury.    He never showed much in any game and his rating for performances ranged from average to below par.  His takes in line-outs became less and less as he called tlien-outs to go to everyone but himself.  
After Super 15 he played exactly 17 minutes of rugby against Australia before he was injured and replaced by De Jager.  While Matfield showed zero during the time he was on the field of play - De Jager really performed well.  Matfield will not play any further matches before the WC and that raises the question should he actually be in the WC?
Fourie du Preez 
He has not played in a test since last year when eh was not a house on fire - at best his performance can be rated as average.  In his second test last year he was injured and was out of rugby for the rest of 2014.  He played 9 matches for his Japanese club this year and after a break of nearly three months he went back to his club foor training.  He obviously was unfit and during training got injured again.
He was out since he joined the training camp and never played a single game.  He was scheduled to play - subject to him getting through the training programme on Tuesday. He failed and he is unlikely to get any playing time before the WC.
It will be a huge gamble to select a player still under an injury cloud and only a few matches in the "soft"  Japanese league to be in the EC squad.
