There is serious panic in the media reports with an indication that Meyer will go to extremes to get some players on the field of play - likely with disastrous consequences. The following players are mentioned in particular:-
Willem Alberts
Alberts is the loosie with the lowest work rate of any loosie in any of the Super 15 franchises in SA. He makes the fewest tackles with the highest missed tackle ratio and his ball carries are totally ineffective. He is poor in ball handling as well and since he has a serious pace deficiency stemming from gross over-weight he cannot get to breakdown points and make zero contribution to breakdown ball protection and recovery.
He was injured in June 2014 and was off for the rest of the year. He played his first game in April 2015 in Super 15 and was a bad flop in the game and had an injury relapse putting him out of the game for another two months. He came back to play two further matches in which he was a failure as well. Another injury put him out of the game to date.
Three injuries in 14 months requiring long absences and three games played in the said 14 months - will leave us with a player who is totally deficient of match fitness and a handicap in the team.
Victor Matfield
Matfield is the optimum reputation player with very little to show at present. He is a case of serious deficiency in physical conditions, but is lauded for his contribution to line-outs and his deficiencies as a Tight 5 player is only recognized by ex-players who is critical of his lack of grunt.
I have compared his performances in his last three tests with the performances of De Jager in his last three tests and that indicated that Matfield's performances has deteriorated to the level of a low work rate and low impact player. His tackles are weak and his prowess in line-outs questionable.
The evaluation mentioned indicated that his ball carries have deteriorated to near to the non-existent level resulting in turnovers and penalties, while his tackles are weak and ineffective.
To even consider playing him ahead of De Jager is a serious joke and could only lead to the further weakening of an existing questionable Tight 5
Fourie du Preez
The most praised and hyped player at present in SA. His last tests were in June 2014 when he was not a house on fire. He got injured in his second test last year and was out for the remainder of 2014. He then played a few club games in 2015 in Japan and when called up for pre-season training got injured in training. He was supposed to be available for the test last Saturday and suffered an injury relapse which prevented him from further training last week.
His injury problems has a direct relationship to his lack of physical fitness. In recent photos he looked clearly over-weight. The problem is - like De Villiers said previously - it is very hard for a player on the elderly side to maintain his fitness level and he must train twice as hard to maintain the performance level he attained in his prime years as a rugby player. Du Preez is 33 years of age and there is no indication that he in fact is maintaining the training programme required to become a good performer.
Du Preez did not have a game for the past five months and before then minimal low level club games only in the period January to March 2015. His match-fitness can at best be described as non-existent on test level at this stage.
Fransie Steyn
He is in serious competition with Du Preez as the most hyped up player in SA. The last test he played in was in 2012 and since then he was a total flop on Super 15 level in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
He had serious injuries in both 2012 and 2013 and his most notable achievement was that he could actually play in the backline with his gross overweight in evidence. This probably let to his injuries in any event. In 2014 White played him in both the 12 and 10 positions with the result that the Sharks backline collapsed comprehensively. Because of overweight - he developed a whacky knee - which had a further impact on his performances. He came back from japan being at an acceptable weight level - but picked up weight again as the season went on.
Before the end of Super 15 he had another injury and has been out of the game since then.
In 2013, 2014 and 2015 Steyn had some serious deficiencies in playing on Super 15 level. He was consistently -
* the player with the worst missed tackle ratio of all inside centers and flyhalfs in all SA franchises;
* the player with the worst attacking abilities with the least line breaks and least defenders beaten of all SA franchise centers;
* the player with the worst ball possession losses with a record of 32 such losses in Super 15 in 2014.
This player is hyped up to delirious level by some members - but statistically a serious flop in all respects. It is for some members enough to say his stats count for nothing - his mere appearance on the field of play scares the wits out of opposing players.
This is the only player that can be certified in advance as a total flop if he is selected.
