Carter is a glamour boy but although he was once a very good player he is now over the hill. I think they believe name players increase the attendance figures.
You get the fan who things one of these players does one thing in a game he has got his moneys worth. The club is was ting its money. Not worth 1 million.

...Bean Brain looks like we might be setting a precedent here...this could be just the beginning...If Carter can command a million then Cruden must be worth at least $1.5- $2 million easy...looking good for the future of rugby but money isn't everything and Kiwis are more likely to value playing for their country over making a fast buck...something to do with a sense of loyalty that South Africans could learn from my friend...

Yes I would, Saffex. You see, for starters, the pay at Saints is already high. The perks then add to that by quite some distance...so I would probably be coming out with more than that figure per annum, as a top player, but it would not be classed on my wage bill. I wouldn't be paying Tax on the that lump sum, so I guess I would be a winner all round ! Happy at my Club, loyal to my Club and the fans and probably financially as well off as those chasing money around the globe, from Club to Club

Oh...and by the way....there is more to life than money, Saffex and it doesn't buy happiness or even security, I'm afraid. It certainly doesn't make people more pleasant or attractive....The pursuit of money is turning this world into a sewer.

Oh what utter rubbish.......if Carter is on a basic of £1M, imagine what the rest is......he will be earning 10 times what any Saints player is earning and good on him for it.

Loyalty to clubs means stuff all these days for the very same clubs show very little loyalty to players when they are no longer in favour.

The days of loyalty in the work place are long gone.....same applies in sport which is now the work place.

Ten times ? I don't think so ! And if you think that driving the game bust and ruining the sport that you profess to love is a good thing, just to massage the ego if a few mercenaries and to make them rich into the bargain, well, that is fine. Some of us do not....and we can see the bigger picture.
Loyalty is something some of us hold quite dear. And not just in the work place....everywhere, in every facet of life. But it seems that counts for naught with most people too, doesn't it ?

Loyalty works both ways...in the work place as well as in all walks of life.It isn't just a given that you can expect loyalty in anything, simply by being...you don't just get it handed to you on a platter.
Some people are treated disgracefully and those I feel very sorry for.
Others, like that man you just spoke of, would not know the meaning of the word loyalty if it jumped up and punched him in the face ! He is loyal to one man and one man only...himself and he cares only for his bank balance. He also seems to think that he is irreplaceable and that, what he wants, he will automatically get. Well, I am sorry, but that is not, and will no longer be, the case. Even those like myself, who spent years defending the man, have finally given up and can simply see his deluded, paranoia laden, poison dripping stories for what they really are.I don't think quoting him in a comment about loyalty is going to do the cause much of a favour, Saffex !

Ah it's the " with all due respect " phrase again....which means precisely the opposite. Why not just say I am about to insult you, Rebecca or something along those lines ? Wastes less time, Saffex !
Believe it or not, Saffex, I have actually worked in my life and in workplaces that I imagine you probably wouldn't wish to darken the doorsteps of. You see, I worked throughout my schooling and I was working in establishments where people were treated quite badly and paid wages, even though they were skilled workers, that you probably would never wish to get out of bed for. But you know, they were doing work in a line that we all benefit from, yet they were not remotely well treated by their Lords and Masters and are, no doubt, looked down on by most of the people even here. You see they were Tradesmen and I'm afraid that's just not good enough for most people these days, is it ? Much better to be paid obscene wages to kick a football about !

Well all I am saying is that the days of loyalty in the work place are long gone.....and the same applies to sport now that it has gone pro.......so don't tell me that loyalty works both ways for it no longer does.

Being all sentimental about a rugby club and taking a lesser wage for it is a classic case of being stupid and shooting oneself in the foot. Its just not the modern way.........less than 5% of players out there would abide by your dream.

Reality dictates, not dreams or idealism

Rubbish there will be no downfall of rugby as per all walks of life the strong will prevail and the weak will die. The game has got better and will continue to do so in the name of progression. Rugby players get peanuts compared to other codes.
I can't think of anything better than earning £1m a year playing rugby in France at the end of your career. What a brilliant experience and getting paid royally for it. Yeah I can see a player turning his nose up at that in favour of loyalty to the Crusaders - get real

Oh so it is fine that International teams, such as yours, get wrecked because the players leave your shores in droves to ply their trade to the highest bidder ? Or teams like mine get filled to the brim with has beens and never was players at the expense of our own talent ? That is ok, is it ? That Grass Roots teams, like the feeder teams and Juniors you have yourself Coached and your Son has played for, get swallowed up because the game cannot afford them any longer ? That is ok, is it ?
Maybe you would like to make money like that.Well, maybe we would all like things we can't have.
This happens to be something that is not for the greater good and, sometimes, that is more important than a few people and their wallets !

Oh they can become rich and they do become rich, richer by playing Rugby than many of them ever would if they had to try and make do in the real world. But it is the over inflated pay cheques they are now demanding for their wares that will be sitting alongside their over inflated egos ( I do see a number of Tweets from some with their Hashtags thanking Restaurants/baby product manufacturers/jewellers/designers/Airlines etc just so they can get freebies...really ? Do they not have enough already without selling their souls for a babygro and a meal out ? You see that sort of thing just makes my skin crawl and says everything you need to know about a person ) that will possibly put them all out of business if they are not very careful. Let's face it, I think we all know about pricing oneself out of the market, don't we ? Rugby is in danger of eating itself.
And I am sorry, but just maybe you should sit back and think about the reality of whether anyone deserves to be paid obscene amounts of money. I don't think they do...and, if anyone does, it isn't a guy that spends his days running around a field in a pair of shorts !

I still cannot understand the issue with rugby players making loads of money. Mark Shuttleworth was lucky to have a computer program that somebody was willing to pay millions of $s for and he became filthy rich over night. Fe rnando Alonso is will be earning a record amount of money at McLaren, which is more than the £20M+ that Vettel will be earning at Ferrari, or the £20M+ that Hamilton will be earning at Mercedes, and that for driving around a track for two hours on 19 Sundays in 2015 and I do not see anybody cr@pping themselves over that. And don't get me started on their endorsements.

It's like talking to a brick wall with some of you, isn't it ?
For the record, NO sportsman is worth the obscene amount of money they are paid. Simple as that. I don't care who they are, where they are from or what sport they play. They are not worth it.
And, at this rate, Draad, there will be no Clubs to get the players to if they insist on inflating wages to such stupid levels such as these. Because they will not be able to sustain this. Do you not understand this ?
In France, there will be a couple of Clubs playing each other....and Toulon will have a Squad so big it can field three or four teams. The amount of game time these so called players who love to play Rugby will actually get will be negligible. They might as well take up knitting. And when the owners get bored, or lose money or go bust ? What then, you clever people ? Lots of players without work and only a handful of Clubs left to employ them.
As for players not being lured to Europe if the pay isn't right.....good. Some of us don't want them. We want them. We want our own players, thanks !

Most of the guys are overpaid but as long as guys like us continue to support these teams or players by attending matches, watching PPV TV etc the money will simply continue to rise.
Unfortunately we will just have to keep complaining about ticket prices and pay up.

Becs, the players don't demand the pay, they are being made offers they would be stupid to refuse. I'm  no btick wall, but you seem to be. Supply and demand is a simple principle. Players won't be offered that huge ammounts unjustified. There are lots of reasons they get these offers. A normal principle of business is that you have to spend money to make money. No club will pay those salaries if it's not justified. Like F1, where the drivers are paid the bulk of the budget, in rugby, the players are the ones bringing in the money. What's the use in paying the players peanuts and have the board of directors of the clubs reaping the spoils? No club will pay what they can not afford. The fact that English and Frog clubs pay stellar ammounts to foreigners to play for them does not make your rugby weak, but the opposite actually. England has done better in the Pro era than before it. Globalisation is here to stay, and its not only rugby. If it wasn't for foreigners, England would have been much worse for wear in the last 20 years. You need us lesser beings to survive.

My team does not get wrecked by players moving abroad as we select foreign based players.......so bang goes that point.
If your clubs are stupid enough to invest in washed up hasbeens, then that's their problem.
How on earth are large salaries paid to certain players going to affect juniors like my son playing for their school or club. How Saints spends its money has absolutely no bearing on what happens to a local club down the road or the local public school that plays rugby.

Large sums of money are paid to entertainers......so yes these players are worth the money they are paid......they are more worthy than boring bankers, accountants, politicians, lawyers and doctors.......who happen to make their mark on only a fraction of the people an actor, rock star, tv personality or great sportsman does and therefore these people command large salaries for that entertainment........its the reality of life.
These people become famous for a reason and yes some ride that wave without any talent but they still provide entertainment for those simple folk with no taste!!

You all seem to fail to understand there is a correlation between teams going to the wall because they cannot compete with the huge wage bill that is expected these days and the fact that only a few Clubs are able to survive these changes. Most Prem Clubs do not even break even yet alone make a profit so how do you expect them to sustain this sort of thing ?
As for improving our Rugby. Not really. We have plenty of very good players here who fail to get an opportunity because of idiots here who think we only want to see your rejects instead of our own players. We're not all that stupid.
As for Lawyers, Accountants, Bankers, Politicians etc being worth a fortune....no, I agree, Saffex. They are not. Very few people are worth the obscene amount they are paid.
Just because someone is offered something, it doesn't mean they are worth it. Like the children being schooled here with their dozens of A* GCSE's etc. They are not worth the paper they are written on. But, of course, they " deserve " them, don't they ?

Big salaries are fine as long as it does not all end up like in Europe where most of the best Football clubs are. If a footballer wants to make the highest salary or even a medium salary they go to Europe.
Surely South Africa has to get involved with Europe somehow. The viewship is high in Europe.  Otherwise soon all of our top players will be in France, and SA will be paying to watch their best players in another tournament.

Ausralian rugby is bad financially as an organisation. Who knows how profitable the All Blacks are,
but the AIG contract they have could be much bigger than what the Boks and Australia have.

The players are getting younger and younger (Goosen, etc
Our teams will do worse and worse in the SuperX- especially with more teams. We just do not have the depth in backline players for more SuperX teams, especially with more players leaving than ever before.

The issue is that involvement of  SA in European club competition is totally illogical and would have been tried if it was not a logistical  impossibility.   In the  NH their club season runs from August through to May - in SA the season basically runs from February to October.
The NH break is from June to August - in the SH it is from October to Mid-February.   If SA teams have to participate in NH competitions - the player will have no annual breaks and play 12 months a year,   The other issue is how are away games by clubs in Europe have to be organized when they have to play in SA?   They cannot arrange their games in such a way that they all happen outside the SA summer since they have also the 6 Nations to contend with.
The idea that the situation of SA players playing overseas would impact on the strength of local teams in Super 15 an not on situations where SA teams play against NH clubs is ludicrous.

You quoted the top earners in Rugby - but other than Carter and Habana  not one of the players are international quality players anymore - Even Carter is dubious - there has been serious deterioration in his performances over the last two years and taking his age into account - there really is no chance of a turnaround in that situation.   He was also injury-prone in the said period in any event.   The same applies to Habana
Basically all ten top earning players are reputation players - and good luck to them.

I think the Poms are ruining their rugby by enticing all these foreign players by offering them huge sums to come and play. Cant blame the foreigners for accepting these great offers. The Brits have a hand over mentality. They hand over their soccer to foreigners, their rugby, their jobs and via immigration they hand over their country to foreigners - some of whom are a real security threat to them.
Is there any common sense left or any fight left to put things right one wonders.
Soon the original Brits will be foreigners in their own over crowded Island. Makes no sense when one thinks of it. What other nation in the world would allow this. Would accept foreigners coming to live on the dole etc. It's all very strange behaviour from these rather odd people?  I mean would you want ou snapster practising law in your country!!!!!Becs stop balming foreigners and get your house in order I would suggest.
The Frogs of course are hardly much better as they follow these self destructive type practises as well. The whole of Europe had better wake up. Their economic success is attracting less well off folk from around the globe. The overcrowding will only get worse. I was watching a programme re rentals of flats in London - 800 pounds per week etc. Unbelievable prices!!

I think you were watching an old show re rentals if it was only 800 pounds per week...or iit was a poor area of London, Beeno !!!!!
I think you will find that it is the French who are ruining Rugby, not us. These players are going to France, not England. The only Club that buys up your players really is Saracens, and they are part owned by South Africans who want to abandon the Salary Cap and totally wreck our game for good....so don't blame us, thank you very much.
Have a read of your Bible and the term Greed might come into it a bit. Go and have a word with your fellow Religious boys and remind them of that when they are off chasing money and tweeting brands so they can get free prams and meals out etc etc. I don't think God would think much to that, to be honest. They must have failed that challenge he has set them on their path through life !
As for my country, yes, it is overcrowded, fit to burst and resembling a sewer in certain places. I fear it is all about to change and not in a good way, unless the politicians get a grip, for once. The infrastructure can't cope, you see. Never could and unchecked immigration is never advisable in any country, least of all one the size of a postage stamp ! But there we are, folks like me will bear the brunt of it.
The EU was always a front for a certain country to control the whole of Europe. It got its wish. But, as we all said, it could never work and would implode, causing more hatred and distrust than just leaving people be who were simply free to trade with each other...as we always were. It's a disaster that will only get worse....but wait and watch us leave very soon !
