Well the good news is I think Meyer is finally over Spies, so he might sneak into the squad. What counts against him is the class of our other loosies that cover more positions, rather than a specialist 8.

SA teams need big pacs to get on the front foot. That includes at least 2 big loosies in the starting 15. Whiteley is a bit light for a 8. I know this statement is gonna cop me some flack, but we all saw what happened to the Stormers without Scalla and Duane.

Db, Whitely is never going to be ahead of Vermeulen, but Vermeulen is not bullet proof, and I would not mind Whitely replacing him should the need arise. If Whitely were to play, I agree with you, we'd need to have two big flankers on either side .

I think that Whiteley will have a good chance to be selected since he also cover no 7 - when he did play last year for the Springboks he came on at 7.
Whiteley isd not physically as strong as Vermeulen is - but he is speedier with an ability to link up with the backline in attacking moves. That is a benefit in the faster moving present playing environment.

I like Whitely, and would have no problem with him playing, but We have seen over and over again, that the mobile lighter number 8's general don't do well up North.

Nope....Whitely will be dominated by guys like Reid. He is a great leader and a fine S15 player....he is not physically capable of performing at the sharp end of the RWC. Let's get real.

He's a fine no8 with a lot to offer.
Warren Whiteley's body physique is not a problem to me, he's physically stronger than what some may think. I've never really seen him getting bumped off or tackled hard by opponents so why is this false notion being made?

Whitely should make the RWC. If something happened to vermuelen a loose trio of Coetzee, Whitely and Burger would tackle the wee abs into oblivalon.One must of course first get in proper tight 5. meaning there is no pace for wee matfiled!

One explanation please. Whiteley is 1,93 tall and weighs 106 kgs - the right weight for an athletic rugby player - inclusive of a loosie. Matfield is 2,01 tall and weighs 105 kgs. Now you tell me that Whiteley is not physically strong enough as a loosie - but the stringbean Matfield is. I will not "piss off" until you come up with a logical answer in this case.

Tokkie it's how you play....not what you weigh. JJ has perfectly respectable size stats but he can't stop an opposing centre. Warren has decent numbers, but he isnt a powerful monster as so many of these top loosies are these days. Whiteley is an open field player....the WC is not that kind of contest.

OK - that is fine - but how does Whiteley play that makes him unacceptable as a loosie and how does Matfield play making him acceptable as a lock?
If the WC is not an open field kind of contest - of what use is Matfield who contributes near to zero to Tight 5 play and constantly moonlights in the backline? How would that contribute to strong Tight 5 play?
