Despite the hype Francois Steyn showed NOTHING in Durban IN THE SEMI-FINAL. If anything he showed no improvement in his speed and he was not in any way effective in attack - was easily tackled when he tried to amble forward.
Was not matchfit and despite the photos of Saffex - looks like he is still carrying extra bulk. The Sharks took a chance with him - and when he showed zilch - he was replaced. I do not think he will be in their starting line-up for the final.
Will have to wait till the Super 15 next year to see how he does on the field of play. Present signs are not promising though.
As expected, Fat Fransie Steyn is enormous. He looks to be
carrying more weight now than when I last saw him.

You obviously did not read what I said - there can be no argument to the fact that Francois Steyn was useless last Saturday. Steyn wa not matchfit at all. I said that I think we should wait and see how he actually does in Super 15.
The same applies to Burger. The fact that for a variety of reasons I have reservations about their expected performances - I think it would get clearer with more exposure in Super 15 and that remains the core of the issue. That would be a reasonable and fair approach.

Please get it straight - I am not writing the two players off. I mentioned that Burger is 32 - an age where players are already on a downward trend - but said he showed nothing yet - and went on to say that Super 15 next year will be the final determinator.
Insofar as Francois Steyn is concerned the problem is still his speed. If you look at the photos posted by Saffex - it is evident that Steyn - with a physicl built like that - ncan ever be a speedster. He is in the photo of Marcel Coetzee and they are of the same built. I am not saying he is not going to make it next year - but have reservations if he can end up in an attack-minded Springbok backline. Problem is due to lack of speed and ball sense - he may ruin any attacks by the backline. However, he should be given a fair chance next year.
Neither of these two should be in the EOYT squad. The worst thing any coach could do would be to take them in place of performing players on the basis of reputation. It is a nutcase idea to select players on that basis. It would be a joy ride for them - since they would not be in the match day 23 - and would weaken the squad considerably - resulting in reducing Meyer's options and ending up with the same problems encountered last year.

When I saw Francois Steyn playing early in his career I thought he was awesome. He was to my mind the ideal full back. He was moved to center in the 2007 WC because of the injury to Jean de Villiers. I was in France and saw him play - frankly despite all the hoo-haa I cannot remember where he really stood out as a center. I saw him missing a tackle that nearly cost the Springboks the final - but for the rest to my mind he was an average player with the ability to kick long distance penalties and drop goals.
In the subsequent years he played at center and I never thought he was the best around. He gradually picked up weight from the 98kgs he was in 2007-08 to 110 kgs by 2011. In the process he lost some speed and his long-distance kicking at goal became less successful.
I saw a few games he played on club level in France and he was above average - but nor a real star.
Since his return from France he has to date shown NOTHING of substance - eith er in the tests he played in or for the Sharks - fact is he was in the main poor in Super 15 this year.
I think White is remembering Steyn as the player he used to be in 2007-08 and the fact that he was selected for the team this week could have been instigated by Meyer and White - but the plot failed as he really was useless.
White is going to crack the whip and try to foce Steyn to get into the right physical condition - but if he continued to play like he did since his return from France - he has no chance of being a regular in the Sharks team - White will just not select him.
