Australia? NZ? or even SA? maybe Uruguay or even England, Ire or Wales...You know what a minnow could take ir but we all know rugby, it's consistency...the Ab's to win...but Georgia to challenge their minor pool

 Good soldiers sleep whenever they need to or can no probs ,even when marching .If you have a clear conscience it is the sleep of the just .We have scabby politicians here too its just a matter  of scale .And the first consideration of all men should be their families wellbeing everything else is subordinate to that .

What people do not realize is that only the brave manage to survive in Africa.  The daily challenges here are  beyond what others experience in countries with a sound social and political environment.  Under such circumstances in those countries the Government protects all people - the protection situation in most countries in Africa - inclusive of South Africa - is just not present.
Many people would say that the present Government protects the Blacks - but in survey after survey the older Blacks said they were oppressed by the previous Government - but they were socially and in their work situation must better off than they are at present.  They say the same of the education system, which factually is worthless unless you go to the reputation private or Government schools, as well as the Government hospitals where the situation is desperately poor as well and people die virtually daily in hospitals as a result.
So it is a case of survival by the strongest and people capable of leaving the country is indeed lucky.  For us who have no option but to stay, the only real relief  is to see whether our sports teams and personalities could make us proud - other than the beauty of the natural environment there is nothing else that could help us in our daily struggles to maintain a decent life.  
I was happy that the previous racist Government fell and was hopeful that it would erase the racist issue - but never bargained on what happened after the departure of Mandela and Mbeki.  Under Zuma the situation deteriorated into chaos and an ever-increasing mountain of corruption and crime - with governance on all levels collapsing. Every day new evidence emerged of massive corruption and fraud in Government and it is crazy to see what comes out virtually on a daily basis in the media  insofar as fraud, corruption and collapse of Government services are  concerned.   The only province where there is still some normality is in the Western Cape - hence my escape from KwaZulu-Natal to the said province.
Our money is worthless and I really do not blame young sportsmen leaving the country - they have to do so in order to get financial security.  
So lets get back to the WC - I can only hope and pray South Africa does well - at least that in the absence of everything else, would give us some reason to be proud South Africans - proud of our beloved country.   That can only happen if the best players are selected,  but Government interference - like happened in the Cricket World Cup final stages - would put pay to that one.  Then we have another handicap in our rugby set-up - a coach who has constantly backed old friends insofar as selection is concerned and do not regard performance by them as a requirement for selection.  So I am afraid it is unlikely that our prayers will be answered. 
However, that would not destroy our hopes altogether - and one can only continue to dream about it.  In the shorter term lets hope our swimmers do well in the swimming world championship in Kazan  this coming week.

 New Zealand blew the bank on the last World Cup. Can they afford another stuffed brown envelope? But so far the order looks to be Australia up front, with England and South Africa next in line and New Zealand scrouging for pennies to buy this years title. Australia look very slick to say the least, so far.

 By the way - I read in the media we will meet the AB's in the semis if both teams reach that level.  Who are we likely to meet in the quarters?

the boks will meet the AB in semis if you lead your pool, but for this you have to beat first Samoa (and Scotland, who always have caused problems to the boks).
In this case you'll meet the second of the Pool A in QF, the pool of England, Oz, Wales and Fiji.

 ...Yup Fiji and Samoa to cause some serious damage this RWC...Tonga may even beat Argentina to progress...NZ without Aaro n Cruden worries me and then there's the yarpy refs...

Home advantage is a huge advantage in a RWC (refs, crowd, extra-motivation,...) and IMO the most probable final will be AB-England.
If the favs lead their pools, which is the most probable, the QF would be:

Schm¡ dt has implemented a very ugly gameplan, strog defense and similar to the 10-men rugby but very effective for the knock-out finals. Seems like the only team that could beat the poms before the final

 Australia are looking the most complete of the SH sides, which leads me more to believe that a NH team ill ultimately win it given that they are very well equipped to deal with all 3 SH sides, unless NZ up their game considerably.

I have a slight difference from you.  We have a chance - but it will depend on player selection and nothing else.  Meyer is bound to get his selection wrong - which will reduce our chance to win to zero.   If he selects players like JP Pietersen, Morne Steyn, Francois Steyn, Willem Alberts and Victor Matfield - all failures in 2011 and way past their sell-by date - we must close shop and not even bother to watch the games.
Aside from the above - there are a number of players who are gamble selections as well.  The two most prominent of those will be Fourie du Preez and Jean de Villiers.  Du Preez never played well in succeeding week tests well and that is basically the result of the Japanese soft rugby system.  He is clearly not fit enough under normal circumstances to play rugby in succeeding weeks.  Be it as it may he will get some game time in the upcoming two tests - but I am not holding my breath for him to  succeed.  He is already 33 years of age and it is very hard for a player who has played no rugby for five months and very little before it - to get match-fit.
Talking about fitness levels required for players - in recent programmes on TV the minimum fitness requirements for each position was mentioned.  It was clear that when Jacque Fourie joined the Springbok camp in June he was in such poor physical condition that it would have been physically impossible to achieve the targets.  The question is - will make Du Preez the target sets for scrummies and De Villiers the target for centers?  Hopefully those norms will be assessed and if they fail - they should not be in the squad.         

 ABs have the best mix and game.England have home ground advantage.OZ can surprise many.Wales have an outside chance.
As for SA , much depends on what Meyer does. SA have the players but without the correct combos and a decent strategy it is probably an early exit forv SA.
So the Bokke may upset the apple car or the may upset the fans.

Let's face it all of these teams have a chance to win it. Maybe France will finally do it. I don't count out the Boks as they are improving & with the return of injured players they have a good shot.

 The Wallabies have come along but are far from being good enough to win the RWC, though it hurts to say so. Have been finishing well but some serious frailties in places. You would be foolish to count out the All Blacks. I am not reading too far into RC form this year. Being used more as a testing ground by all teams. Come the main event anything could happen but probably won't. NZ to win followed by England.

I think Aj must be the weakest Bok supporter ever. Is he a nz mole?
Boks have to be favourites but we must admit to fear about the coaches infatuation with wee matfiled and quota picks being enforced.Nice post there Mike. Sums it up pretty well.
wee abs are too fragile to do much. 
Second favourites have to be England and the final will actually be the match between SA and England.Oz looking good.
Every RWC we hear about Samoaner Tonga and Fiji. Yaaaawn. However it may be good for Boks to be second in the pool?   

My more detailed predictions
Quarter finals 1: Boks vs. EnglandBoks are improving & they will get some real help if they get some of their injured players back in time. I have to agree with wee Beeno on that one
Beating England will be tough but if the Boks get through that game with a win & no critical injuries they will be riding high in confidence & hard to stop.Prediction: Boks win
QF 2:  France vs. ABsThe first real tough/competitive game the ABs will play in the tournament will be in the Quarter Finals (sound familiar)Prediction: AB win
Therefore I predict Boks, Ireland, ABs and Oz will be the winners of the QFs.
Semi-final 1: could well be Boks vs. ABs if the French don't pull another rabbit out of the hat. Will be a great game & if Boks have finally got their act together they have a shot at winning it. It is good that the ABs will finally have had a competitive game in the tournament (France) and Boks will have played a tough game against Poms so both teams should be well prepared. 
Prediction: ABs win.
Semi-final 2 I expect Ireland & OZ to win their QF games but a Samoan win would be fantastic. Ireland have really shown us something recently also so frankly any of these three could win.
