Borrowing the thread idea from Jonathan Kaplan, but it is a good question!
For me it is probably Etzebeth, very consistent throughout the tournament, but there are many others, for a variety of reasons, that could be considered! Lets hear it.

Best: Lood or Eben
Biggest let down: Willie

Louw picked up form in the last halve, but sadly our game plan did not give anyone a chance to shine...

Damien de Allende. The only Springbok back who ever looked dangerous.

BokBF, if there was a thread for the most disappointing player, it would probably be Willie! So much hype, so little delivery! I still rate him, but that is what makes his performance so disappointing. Lood was very good, but did some very bad things at very important moments!
De Allende was good, his lack of experience did show up from time to time, but yes, probably our best back. That said, our game plan did not give the backs a lot of opportunities to showcase their talents.

I agree Lood did have a couple of brain farts but this experience will be invaluable in the years to come. I only hope that if HM stays on or whoever is the next to take up the poison chalice will have the strength to consistently select from a group of 30-40 of our best. Then implement a game plan that is suited to our strengths.

Would be nice if we as supporters didn’t all act like a bunch of winging girls when our favourites are not selected. The 1000’s of duplicated Matfield, older generation, Damien and Kriel posts are so boring.

The Boks are our team, can’t get my head around why they are not supported win or loose.

De Jager played well against the Minnows- but average against the top sides.
Fourie Dupreez did well in most matches- but fell apart in the 2nd half vs the All Blacks. He was the only one who was kicking ok.
Willie Leroux had some good games- but the Meyer game plan killed the creativity of the outside backs.
JP was looking great as was Habana but they did not get much ball from the quarters onwards

Like I said, our game plan made them all look kak.
PS, my game of the RWC was Aus vs Scotty, only edging SA vs Jap because it was a KO match. Jap is team of the year and heroes of this RWC.

du Preez was average

De Jager still has the record of most tackles made in the RWC and least tackles missed.  he was MOM in one of the WC Matches.
De Allende beat most tackles in the RC as well and that record is unlikely to be equaled.
The missed tackle on Kaino by De Jager now suddenly became the defining factor in evaluation - which obviously is BS.

...loose forward bias at work probably but Burger or Vermulen, worked tirelessly at the breakdown and as battering rams,.. at times making more metres than yr backs  - against Wales game Vermulen saved the day setting up that winning try and made more metres than anyone in either team - playing with a neck injury to boot ! ...Pollard was the best of the backs which fail as a cohesive unit..

louw had one good game in 3 years guys really....not a proper open sider and if meyer had the real open sider there namely brussouw louw would not have featured.
for me pollard given his age and potential had a very good steady rwc apart from a few misses he has epic potential but needs a game pattern that allows him a lot more ball to dictate terms.
he can be as good as carter is if and if the game pattern brings him more into the game.

Best: Du Preez. The only player that can singlehandedly make the team look world class all on his own.

Disappointments: Lood, Damian, Kriel. All touted as the best in the word in their positions, neither one made a single impression when they were needed. Damian's sole attacking moment was against the USA, twice. Kriel looked dangerous in acres of space, only. Nether one created anything. Lood was man handled when playing the big boys, looked very ordinary and cost us a crucial try.

Note-able Mentions: Louw , Etzebeth, Schalk, JP, Brussow (dominated McCaw, Hooper and Pocock)

Well our centres were the only thing that stood between us and another WC. Unfortunately in that regard they stood more imposingly than they ever did on defence.
Lomp's pattern was exactly like his 2014 pattern. He looked like a world beater against Scotland in 2014....and then came the Bargies away and some perspective. this WC he was g reat against the USA and then came the knockouts and he disappeared.
He is a lethargic player with very limited skills and no pace...gave away tries against NZ and the Bargies. Hugely hyped.

You obviously do not understand what is meant by hype.  Hype is applied when nothing else is available to support nonsensical ideas,
Who was hugely hyped in this WC?  All the failures the Springboks should never have had in the squad because their performance before selection was poor or non-existent.
So we have had Matfield and co to start with.

I do not have a 'best Springbok'. Average or below average for most of them.

I must however mention the growth noticed with Malherbe - as a tight head prop and his open field play. Think he has made 3 his number. Hope we have seen the last of Coenie.

Blikkies....the opposition he scrummed against would be my reservation. Every opponent in the knockouts was either a weak or a replacement loosehead. Malherbe is potent going forward...a basket case going back. Until he can scrum and hold his feet when his pack is under the cosh I wont be convinced. The scrum at minute 73.20 against the Bargies is an example.

I agree he is useful outside the scrum, but then so was Coenie who also had a brief period of success on the 2013 YE tour.

This is ridiculous - the quality of opposition is of no importance in the case of Jannie - but suddenly becomes an issue with Malherbe.  The old liar is always demeaning players he dislikes - while ignoring the shortcomings or trying to cover it up of the non-performing farts  he supports.

Etzebeth tops the lot.

Lood was disappointing against better opposition ... Louw had one good match, the rest he was his usual pathetic self ... Schalk was ineffective ... Pollard confirmed his inability to handle pressure ... Matfield was hopeless as expected ...

Malherbe surprised me ... big improvement on powder puff Jannie.

Damian was solid ...

In short ... we need to cut the deadwood away ... and we need to be heavy handed .

Louw was brilliant in the play-offs?    So lets have a look at all matches in the RWC and see whether he met requirements making him brilliant.   Font look only at one match or one incident in a match - that si crazy - look at overall performance.

Japan

ouw1/050/5/4400006/21/010/0
One could say for an opensider Louw was a serious flop in this case.  The try he scored was from a rolling maul - very little else he did.   Tackle count 50% of what is expected from an opensider
4/10
Samoa

Louw0/000/10/112101208/10/010/0
A slightly better performance - but still a low tackle count and a penalty iven away.
4,5/10
Scotland

Louw0/000/6/1128101110/10/000/0
Some ball carries and he actually made one effective ball carry.  Lost ball possession once.   Tackles on the low side of average
6/10
USA
Louw2/0100/6/919000015/30/010/0
Ball carries ineffective - scored two pushover tries - tackle count getting there - but too many missed tackles  Pmalty given away
6,5/10
Wales
Louw0/000/4/73012217/00/000/0
One good ball carry - but his tackle count drop into the unacceptable range.
6/10
New Zealand
Louw0/000/2/40000013/10/010/0
Tackle count and turnovers good - but it should be borne in mind he was only 3rd on the list of tackles made by the Springboks.  Etzbeth and De Jager made more tackle than he did.  For the rest nothing to show.
Rating 5,5/10
Argentina
Louw0/000/3/54001118/30/020/0
Tackle count high - but so was the missed tackles and 1 ball possession loss and two penalties given away.   Ball carries sub-stndard
5/10
SUMMAARY
So this very average player suddenly became brilliant because Mozart says so.  What made him brilliant according to your point of view.  Ha bloody ha.  Objective rating gave him 5,5?10
Skewed assessment by Mozart as per normal.

Gee Foxie, I was so pissed for all our matches,  I completely missed Brussouw's participation. ..for what it's worth, I also completely missed his dominance against Pokokkie and Ritchie for the last 4 years. Clearly my love for Amstel interfered with my rugby perception. ..even more than I thought possible. I think it's time to give Heineken a go....on second thought,  Grolsh sounds less like a failed Bok coach, so rather that then.
