World Cup Bok Captain

According to the latest reports, De Villiers injury still seems to be hanging over his head, and he has apparently been withdrawn from the Springbok training squad. So with the distinct possibility of him not playing at the World Cup, who would be the best candidate to take his place?
I think the front runners for the spot are Vermeulen, Bizmarck, Matfield, Strauss and Schalk. 
For me personally I'd like to see Schalk in the position because his form alone would warrant a place in the team, and in his time as Stormers captain, he seemed to thrive and also managed to resolve a lot of his issues with discipline. The same cannot be said for Bizmarck, who seemed to crumble under the additional responsibility as the Sharks captain. Vermeulen would also be a solid candidate who absolutely leads from the front, but in his time leading the Stormers I am not convinced that he has made a great impact as a captain. Strauss is another very strong candidate that has consistently, in my opinion, outperformed Bizmarck, but I cannot shake the feeling that he is viewed as a fringe player. Lastly Matfield, who unfortunately, I am convinced will lead the boks at the World Cup. Not the line out master that he used to be, even though he is still good in this area. He is almost completely absent when it comes to the hard graft. He is decent on defence, but nothing more . Not our best no.5, and if Du Toit recovers from injury in time, he will be sidelined to make space for this (5 years past his best) show pony. He may offer something as a captain, but I don't think he offers enough to warrant his inclusion.

 Anybody - but Matfield.  To leave a performing player out to make available a position for Matfield so as to make him the captain - would be criminal neglect of responsibility.
A expert once said that in any team you first select the best players in their respective positions and once that is done, you select a player from the team as captain.   The other way around is lunacy.

If you refer to the post lower down on the site started by Luke - you must take note that the posting was about the 2014 training camps - not about the injury sustained by De Villiers against Wales in November last year.
Mozart rake that one up and put it on site to prove that I was wrong in the statement that I have not supported the selection of Jordaan for a year.   I was terribly wrong about it - the posting I made was 51 and a half weeks ago, I should not have said a year.  
There was no news that De Villiers is withdrawn from the next training camp as far as I know.  It would have been on News24 if it was so - and when I checked last  there was a news item about an interview with De Villiers and he said nothing about withdrawal from the upcoming training camp.  Will check again though.  
 

I'd go with Duane Vermeulen. He's the only one of the candidates listed above who is 100% sure of his place in the starting XV.

@ Mike, ok, thanks for the update on De Villiers, but the question still remains. I pretty much agree with you in that I'd rather have anyone other than Matfield, but I'd add Bizmarck just behind him. I don't think he is or ever will be captain material. 
@ Rooi, Duane is the only certainty for selection, but he does not have a hell of a lot of experience as a captain. Also, in the time has has been captain, he seems to have had a bit of a dip in performance. Still, I'd be happy with him leading the Springboks. 

 Duane by default,  but Meyer will pick Victor...or Schalk.
