Johan Ackermann, head coach of the Vodacom Bulls, pinpointed a pivotal early moment in the Vodacom URC final that he believes crucially swayed the game's momentum. The Bulls found themselves at a disadvantage early on at Croke Park, with center Canan Moodie sent off with a yellow card within the first two minutes for a deliberate knock-on as Leinster surged forward.
The situation worsened when the Bulls, although granted a scrum advantage after Leinster fumbled, chose to play on, a decision that quickly backfired. A midfield mishap involving a dropped pass from flyhalf Handré Pollard led to Leinster wing Tommy O'Brien scooping up the ball and darting to the try line, putting the Bulls on the back foot with a 7-0 score while still a man short.
"In hindsight, that's probably the lesson," Ackermann said. "When you've got a yellow card and the opposition knocks on, you take the scrum. A minute or so comes off the yellow card and you back your scrum."
The Bulls' choice not to secure the scrum despite their recognized strength in this area was a tactical error. Ackermann lamented the missed opportunity to potentially draw a penalty and reduce the time disadvantage caused by the yellow card.
The Bulls did later showcase their scrummaging prowess, pushing the Leinster pack back and earning a penalty from a scrum during the latter part of the first half. Yet, by then, Leinster had extended their lead following another Bulls' lineout loss, setting a daunting 12-0 lead.
Ackermann praised Leinster's performance but noted that these early errors and missed opportunities significantly impacted the game's dynamics. "If they don't score there and the next five or 10 minutes stay scoreless, it's still 0-0 and not 7-0," he reflected. The final scoreline read a stark 36-7 in favor of Leinster, highlighting a game of missed chances and what-ifs for the Bulls.
Against a formidable opponent like Leinster, every small error counts double, and the Bulls learned this the hard way. As Ackermann put it, "We knew we had to be accurate, and unfortunately, we weren’t." This match not only underscored the importance of strategic decisions during key moments but also the relentless pressure of grand final rugby where every second and every choice can tip the scales dramatically.
