In a recent scoop from the Springboks camp, assistant coach Deon Davids shed light on why Stormers locks Ruben van Heerden and Adré Smith are the new additions to the national team. As the international season kicks off, these selections come at a crucial time with the Boks gearing up to face the Barbarians, following a matchup between South Africa A and Zimbabwe at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Van Heerden joined the Bok squad last week as a replacement for his injured Stormers teammate Salmaan Moerat. Smith, on the other hand, was roped in shortly after. With the Vodacom Bulls players absent due to their upcoming URC final against Leinster, the Springboks are tapping into their lock reserves, which have been notably depleted due to injuries.

"Obviously it's not the perfect scenario, especially when you lose so many locks and players to injury, but in this environment it's very important to adapt,"

Davids commented during a press conference in Johannesburg. He emphasized the depth of talent in South Africa, noting that injuries, while unfortunate, offer a stage for other players to prove their mettle.

Davids revealed that Van Heerden and Smith were chosen for their complementary skills and their solid partnership at the Stormers.

"Ruben is a player who has the ability to make good calls, filling an important role, especially in the absence of some experienced locks,"

Davids explained. He praised Smith for his robustness, adding,

"Adré brings physicality and grunt to the team, qualities he has consistently displayed at the Stormers."

With these selections, the Springboks seem well-prepared to handle any further disruptions due to injuries, ensuring a versatile and robust lineup. Davids also highlighted the seamless integration of the newcomers into the team dynamics, praising the younger players for blending well with the veterans at the training camp.

The assistant coach is optimistic about the readiness and adaptability of the new players, suggesting they are nearly at Test level. "The fundamentals are in place. There are one or two things we can improve, but they arrived here in good shape, with a willingness to be coached and to learn." This upcoming week offers them another chance to enhance their skills and cement their positions for Saturday’s game.

The Springboks' strategy of nurturing young talent while managing injuries appears to be a balanced approach to maintaining their stronghold in international rugby. As the team continues to prepare, all eyes will be on how these new additions translate their club form onto the international stage.
