I worked for ten years in the 1960's for the Department of forestry. The rules as to maintenance of the undergrowth was extensive and strictly enforced, I cannot remember a single fire problem in all those years on any of the plantations, Remember some of those were the biggest in the Southern hemisphere - places like Manzengwenja and Weza,
What was also strictly controlled was the dagga they grew under he trees, A fire would cause huge losses for the local employee entrepreneurs. When in Amsterdam in 1973 somebody tried to sell me some dagga claiming that it is legal in Amsterdam and the stuff he was trying to sell me was the strongest in the world, He claimed I came from Weza and he could not understand why I burst out laughing, Believe me I did not buy,
What I am driving at is that the trees itself is not the problem for starting fires in afforested areas - it is the undergrowth, If maintenance of that is not managed properly the disaster is to be expected,
From what I understand in respect of the Californmia area - no maintenance has been done and that is for me a real problem, If the same is the case in Australia they musta admit it and do something about it.
Now the other story - lightning can strike trees and cause fires - it is toretially possible - but they would be contained easily if the undergrowth is properly managed. .
