A Look Inside the Welcome Bags Planned for White South African Refugees

The United States is putting together bags with a children’s book on so-called reverse racism, and with a document that defends the country’s founding on the basis of slavery.

In the coming weeks, the United States plans to provide a welcome gift to white South Africans entering the United States as refugees.

They will get an Android tablet, an American flag and copies of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. They will also receive a packet of literature that provides a sanitized, Trump-approved view of American and South African history, one that criticizes racial equity and civil rights laws and promotes claims of discrimination against white people.

The welcome bags include a report commissioned by Mr. Trump during his first term that downplays the role of slavery in the country’s founding, and a children’s book accusing South Africa’s government of “favoring the Black population.”

The gifts would be the latest step by the Trump administration to welcome the white minority in South Africa, even as the president maintains a ban on refugees fleeing from war and persecution everywhere else in the world.

The proposal for the bags is still being finalized. Mr. Trump’s aides have planned to give them to a group of South African Afrikaners who enter the United States in the coming weeks, according to government documents obtained by The New York Times and an official familiar with the matter.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to detail plans that have not been announced. It is not clear how much the bags cost, or how much of the cost was being paid by taxpayers. It is unusual for the government to provide welcome gifts of this kind to refugees.

How Trump Turned America’s Refugee Program Into a Pathway for White People

President Trump has created an exception to his refugee ban for white South Africans, reshaping a program intended for people fleeing persecution and disaster.

June 23, 2026

Alex J. Adams, who leads the Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, a government agency that helps refugees, welcomes the Afrikaners in a letter tucked into the welcome bag.

“The Trump administration understands America’s immigration system must put the U.S. citizen first, and only welcome in those who will assimilate into the American way of life and preserve our borders, language, culture, traditions and ideals,” Mr. Adams wrote in the letter, which was obtained by The Times. “To welcome you to America and help you accustomate to our heritage, we have provided various educational resources to support your day-to-day life and expand your knowledge of American history and values.”

The bags include several products from PragerU, which produces right-wing educational materials, such as a story about a Black South African who must protect a white rugby teammate from a Black mob.

The story, “Lwazi’s Hard Lesson,” describes Nelson Mandela, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and South Africa’s first post-apartheid president, as a “South African lawyer and activist who sought to end apartheid with acts of sabotage.”

It teaches that the South African government’s current policies “favoring the Black population over everyone else have made race relations even worse.”

“Unlike South Africa’s Black population, the white population is declining in number,” according to the PragerU text. “As an easy scapegoat for a failing government, more and more white South Africans are choosing to leave the country each year.”

The text says South Africa’s policies have led to a “brain drain,” in which “experienced, talented people” have left. It also warns of “reverse discrimination” in South Africa, and cites the accusation from the billionaire Trump ally Elon Musk that a genocide of white people is occurring.

Marissa Streit, the chief executive of PragerU, defended the materials and extended an “open invitation” to critics of the literature.

“Our content is available to everyone,” Ms. Streit said. “We only ask that it be engaged with intellectual honesty, fair perspective and a genuine commitment to truth. We have a feeling most of them might learn something new.”

“We commend the administration for taking steps to ensure that the civic onboarding process for all new Americans is substantive, dignified and worthy of this country’s founding ideals,” she added.

Nancy Jacobs, a Brown University historian of South Africa, said the story’s description of a post-apartheid South Africa was “selective in the extreme, and even inaccurate.” White South Africans still have much higher employment rates, lower poverty rates and more lucrative wages than their Black counterparts.

The White House and the Department of Health and Human Services did not respond to requests for comment.

The administration is also planning to include in the bag a report by Mr. Trump’s 1776 Commission, which was released at the end of his first term as a part of a response to antiracism protests in 2020.

The report, written by conservative activists and intellectuals, likens progressivism to fascism, and says Americans were being indoctrinated with a false critique of the nation’s founding and identity, including the role of slavery. The report took aim at the civil rights movement, saying that it “was almost immediately turned to programs that ran counter to the lofty ideals of the founders.”

Hamed Aleaziz covers the Department of Homeland Security and immigration policy for The Times.

Zolan Kanno-Youngs is a White House correspondent for The Times, covering President Trump and his administration.

This is crazy. Slavery was abolished in what was the Cape Colony in 1834 and in the USA by the Republican Party under Lincoln during the US Civil War ending in 1864. It was the Democratic Party that supported slavery and in the period 1864 to 1968 controlled the KKK,

They still treat African Amricans alike - they do as slaves living in ghetto's in the USA. It was the same Democrats who opened the USA Borders under Biden's Auto-pen to serve as a political support base and cause people to flee from California and cities like New York and Chiago in milions to safer areas not controlled by politians supporting a new system of slavery in the USA.

People like Denny and BB left SA as a result of oppresssion under Apartheid but Apartheid had turned into a new method in SA and this time it is the White, Colored and Indoan minorities who is punished by the ANC.

Fact is with he present system of Apartheid the situation is still based on a stance of the ANC, This kind of fake journalism is an abortiuon and that is why it is acceptable to people with prejudice based on racism.

If I was 40 or younger I would not remain in SA to serve as a misreated alien by people like Malema and Zuma.using racism as a basis for reverse discrimination.

BB and I didn’t leave as refugees, nor did we expect or ask for any favors. We landed in a foreign country with nothing and received no support—not that we complained. All we wanted was a level playing field and we got it. Five years after arriving, I decided to take a few courses the government offered free of charge, which helped advance my career. Sadly, opportunities like that weren’t available to people of color in SA.

Those courses set the platform for a successful career in Australia.

The very same reasons and motivation for thousands of white, colored and Indian people leaving SA at present...BTW, the current Trump refugee program includes colored and Indian South Africans too. It is not for whites only, like it's perpetuated by the media...there is deliberate misinformation, disinformation and distortion by the media and South African government...why would that be?...and the South African government is actively interfering with the process...this stinks...but keep on lapping up the BS propaganda...

There are many South Africans already living in the USA, Those there are known fo working hard and for beimg disciplined. They range from rich people to farm workers and are popular to recruit by USA employers,

Amongst them are people of all race groups and they represent a great loss to South Africa. The only Prinvince with liveable orrking and living conditions are the Western Cape with most of the present coloured community supporting the DA,

The rail service collapsed and the postal service has gone bankrupt. The ANC has become a party of the looters and stealers, Municipal services have largely collapsed in 90% of the Municiplaiies, On lower levels the ANC seems to/ have problems. They murder candidates standin g for e-election and the norm is "You had your chance to eat, now itis my turn",

With th e Municipal elections due this year and the issue of illegal migrants taking away jobs from South Africans riots are ongoi.ng in most cities in Souh Africa. The ANC fear a disastrous election is on the horizon and a period of isntability is on the areas in which tribalism still play a major role as well.

With the ANC probably on the brink of disintegration who will hav the upper hand in Governing SA? Nobody knows - most people hope that in the event of civil wars somebody will protect them from the coming disaster,

In the meantime riots against foreigners in the country have become again a daily problem and .thousands of such migrats has been rounded up and send back to their countries of origin. it probably is the last hourah of the ANC as a party,

Who will succeed to get power in SA will determine what is going to happen in future. Will it be the radicals set on desgtroying the ecoinomy of the country - or moderates? In my own opinion it iwll be the "Kill the Famer"adhrents and cooks aimed at een more looting than at present,

In the USA the Communists calling themselves Social Dwemocrats are taking the USA into a country where extreme leftists are in charge. God help the West if that happens. Western civilization and belief in democracy would be gone,

I agree, the ANC has failed as a government. Just when it seems there’s a chance for things to turn around, they only get worse, with the potential for even more trouble ahead. The DA offers a faint glimmer of hope if they could gain power, but that’s unlikely beyond the Western Cape. The MK party and the EFF are bad news, likely to drag the country to the year dot. Corruption and tribalism dominate, and now there’s the looming threat of riots and factional infighting. If you’ve only got five cents in your bank account, you’ve got nothing left to lose.

South Africa needs a miracle.

Sadly true, I feel the same and regret not leaving earlier. On the bright side, I vowed that my children would never be born in South Africa, as I didn’t want them growing up in a society where they developed a mindset based on the pigmentation of someone’s skin. No child deserves that, so we planned for my wife to become pregnant as soon as we got our visas.I don’t judge anyone by the color of their skin; first and foremost, I see them as human beings. I’m happy to say my family shares the same outlook.

AOBTW I've made contact with 'Groenbloed" ...he's fine and over the moon with a new grandchild. I hope to touch base with him in Kleinmond on my next visit, I'll make sure to visit in Snoek season LOL

Cool story, girl.

...and yet despite your protestations and summations, you're still dragged around by the nose by anything to do with race.

No?

Then do tell me why you referred to Caramella as "my girl" while she was destroyed at the elections by someone that is supposedly incredibly stupid, arrogant, and every other negative word you can think of.

Was it her policies that caused your great affinity for her? I bet you can't even think of a single policy of hers and I'm willing to bet that when you called her "your girl" you couldn't name single policy of hers that you thought was worthwhile.

We know it wasn't her politics that saw you have a liking for her.

Same as it's not Obama's track record that makes you admire him. You can say that "he was a statesman, and so dignified, blah blah blah" but you know why you admire him and it has nothing to do with anything he said or did.

Tis cos they look like you Denise. You won't admit it, but it is what is.

So spare us the bleeding heart "content of your character" speech.
