Strauss to start against Wallabies
  • 31 Aug 2014
 0  1

Adriaan Strauss scores a try against Australia at Newlands in 2013

Adriaan Strauss is expected to replace Bismarck du Plessis at hooker when the Springboks tackle the Wallabies in Perth on Saturday.

Du Plessis has played a lot of rugby this season, starting in the majority of the Sharks' Super Rugby matches and in all five Tests for the Boks. His performance has started to suffer as a result, as was evident in the most recent clash against Argentina in Salta.

Heyneke Meyer has often spoken about the need to rotate, given the demands of the modern rugby season and the challenges of the Boks' Rugby Championship schedule. Strauss should start for the Boks at hooker this Saturday, with Du Plessis playing a smaller role from the bench.

Victor Matfield missed the two matches against Argentina due to a knee injury, but has been given the all clear and should start at No 5 against Australia. This could see Lood de Jager dropping out of the match-day squad.

Another rookie in Handré Pollard will make way this week, as Meyer looks to his veterans to give the team an edge at a key stage of the Rugby Champiionship. Morné Steyn will be named at flyhalf, and should provide the Boks with more stability as far as tactical and goal-kicking is concerned.

A further change will be made to the pack, with Marcell Coetzee starting at blindside flank. Coetzee started at No 7 in Pretoria, and replaced Juan Smith in the second half of the game in Salta.

While he is a specialist openside, the Boks coaches are confident that Coetzee has what it takes to do the job at blindside. Willem Alberts isn't available because of injury, while Smith has requested more time to work on his match fitness.

The Bok side to play Australia will be announced on Wednesday.

Some of the rumours are that he is responsibale for the poor scrumming. That he is not going low enough, which is not alllowing his props to get their positioning right.

The problem is that Meyer will choose a losing team with Matfuield and Steyn in the starting line up.   That will weaken the Tight  5 (Matfield) and the backline (Steyn).
The normal poor out of hand kicking game of Steyn will hand Folau enough balls to run at the Springboks and that would be a fiasco.
The inclusion of Matfield will weaken our Tight  5 and our scrumming will be another problem area.   At 106kgs this guy is weak and not suitable to be part of the  tight 5.

Well what do you know? The ball, for the scrums, is back in the court of the locks.

Of course. It just depends who you have an axe to grind with at any particular moment. If "useless" Matfield and/or Bakkies is in the team, the fault rests squarely on his/their shoulders. If Loodvoet and/or Etzebeth is in the team, the blame immediately shifts to the props. Unbelievable.

Can you understand English and read properly - yyou dim bugger?   I said that scrumming is the functions of the Tight 5.   If the props and hokker pops up - it mens the locks are producing the goods and the props and hooker cannot handlethe pressure from both sides theyare subsjected to.
If the scrums are in full retreat is means that neither the locks nor the props are performing well.   In boith the recent tests against Argentina the situation was  bad - most scrums indicated a popiing up of the props - strong enough pressure ebing provided at their back - - with the props largekly the culprits.  Wher ethe scrums are in full retreat it is the problems with both the locks and the props.
The scrums were far more solid with De Jager and Etzebeth on as locks - and Malherbe having replaced Jannie.
Goiing back ti the World team game where we had Bakkies and Matfield as locks the scrums were even worse than they were against the Argentinians.   No popping up that time - just scrums in full retreat.

Well I could buy this one long before the idea of the locks scrumming too high - a comment made to discredit Lood. That was really a funny one as it's the props who determine the scrumming hight.
Lood  played for 80 minutes and when Beast and Malherbe was on the scrum was fine.Mike well said, a 106 kg string bean is going to weaken our scrum and tight 5 becomes tight 4. Fortunatley the oz scrum is nothing to shout about. However if our scrum does well watch the halfwits jump to the wrong conclusions as usual. It will be hilarious.
Also to have two non attacking halfbacks like Pienaar and Morne would be a great pity. Very glad Coetzee will play 7.

Read and learN Hasbeen. Our scrums were no better with Malherbe on the park. Our best scrum was the last one, when Janiie came back on.

Scrum 6...Bargie feed.....Minute 49.20

Jannie and Gurthro are gone. The Boks tighthead side is fragmented and the Bargies get an ideal scrum position to open up play...but the Bargies get a poor ball exit. Still it is good enough and they get a try straight off the scrum as our loosies are dragged blindside by the wheel and the Bargies have an overlap.

Scrum 7...Boks feed.....Minute 60.40

Malherbe straight down once....Malherbe asks Coetzee to brace him, but straight down twice, straight down a third time and he is very lucky to escape a penalty. But the fourth time is like last week, he is lifted, twisted inside and driven into the deck. Malherbe penalized and the Bargies narrowly miss a next phase drop.

Scrum 8....Boks feed....Minute 70.50

Danger man Herrera is now off after being subbed at minute 67. Ayerza continues and Malherbe is down for a 4th and 5th time in a row.....there is no clear dominance though and Walsh lets the scrum go with the front rows on their knees.

Ag Toggie - another weird Mozart description about what he wished to see happening and then put it down as facts.   BS Bernie Mozart at his best.  Start againwith your justification of why Steenkamp and Jannie failed so miserably in all scrums in the first half.

Moz stop speaking shit it was both front rows that went down simultaneously so saying malherbe went down implying he was the culprit is utter hogwash.
The real issue as I keep saying is how insulting steenkamp was

Not another one. The same one which I posted before. Malherbe scrums once...Bargie try as they get loosehead wheel. Scrum 2 Bargie penalty as Malherbe is snapped like a twig. Scrum3, play is allowed to continue despite Malherbe flat on his face again.
And that my friends is improvement according to HasBeen , Sapp and the dumb Oom.

Crap 1st scrum is solid nothing in it - it's a marked change on the retreating scrum while steenkamp and jannie were on. That was embarrassing.
Second scrum has front rows going down simultaneously a few times making it IMPOSSIBLE to attribute blame to a single prop. Ref then incorrectly penalises bok scrum after it was blatantly clear and mentioned by the commentators that the argie loose head was boring in. Should have been a bok penalty.
Third scrum nothing in it

Absolute rubbish. The scrum went inwards because Malherbe was cracked by Ayerza. He then lost his footing and disappeared with his feet kicking vigorously in the air. Walsh was watching from a few feet away. It was a mirror image of Malherbe cracking in the previous test....where a different international ref saw it exactly the same way and penalized him.
This dishonest rubbish is so typical of these groupies. These fools believe this three scrum mess was a solution. You have to laugh.

First scrum..."nothing in it". Except the Bargies drove MLherbe back wheeling the srum so our loosies were committed....leaving them the match up needed to score the try. Nothing in it...man do these guys see anything!

We should not argue with His Imbecilic Eminenece Mozart.  He has identified what went wrong with the scrumming at Salta.   The reason for the poor scrumming had nothing to do with Jannie and Steenkkamp - it was entirely the fault of De Jager, Malherbe and De Allende.

Sonny of course it was an overlap, that's why  you needed your outside centre cutting off the pass or taking his man deep to allow the defence to recover. Fury has done this many times...so has Marius Joubert. What you didn't need was an outside centre two metres behind the inside centre.

Im going to go out on a limb and say this isn't a bad call.. Saffas going to need all the firepower vs the ABs in NZ and Bismark probably does need a rest...

Not losing too much around the park with Strauss but Bismark has the aggression / leadership that will keep the kiwis wary.

I hope you all realise that WA is most likely a home game to you saffas as it is an AFL state and the only people who like rugby there are ex-pats so Im tipping close game - one thing that could work in Aussies favour is travel and the warm up games vs the ABs...

LEts hope for a fair show from the ref and lots of domination by the aussies...

The great warship Bismarck blew HMS Hood out of the water but it didn't last long...it just took a bit of good planning and guts and determination by the British navy, guided by intelligent strategist to sink this super killing machine...quite different from the great rugby player. Don't put Bismarck on a pedestal, he's just a very talented player that like his brother has been over utilised and worked beyond any human expectations.

Adriaan Strauss is different, first of all, he has a huge spirit, like Bismarck but has several unequal factors, he has not faced and been used to the same degree, they both have the skills but Bismarck physically, is physically built more stronger and will last into the future longer than Adriaan...just look at their bodies, Adriaan will burn out quicker as he is built not as athletically as Bismarck . The Du Plessis brothers are very tough and strong just overplayed.

I have a lot of extreme respect for Adriaan, huge guts, skill, determination and character but Bismarck has this as well but will last longer in years to come.

Bismarck needs a break. The lusts of rugby business and public demands have taken their toll on this man. He is also human.

Seb theres recent talk that the Bismarks Captain may have deliberately put his ship in harms way [ he was fiercely anti-nazi apparently] Those 'stringbag" swordfish torpedo bombers didnt help either damaging the Bismarks steering and making  Bismark turn circles .Same for your Bismark ? Is he sinking...glug ,glug,glug....going around in circles ? nahhh !

I will be very happy if Strauss starts ahead of Bizmark. He is the better player in my opinion. Mostly because Bizzie is a penalty machine, and even though he is freakishly strong with ball in hand, his discipline makes him a liability. Strauss is more reliable and in tests that is what you need.

It's more a question of the Bargies lifting the Bismarck...than sinking him. I think  our poor scrumming has far more to do with the need for Bismarck to rest. You don't r est your best player in the two key games of the year.

No arguing that logic Moz, except that Bizzie has not been the best hooker this year! It may be that he has been overplayed, but that does not change the fact that he is out of form at the moment. Surely you can see that replacing him with Strauss does not weaken the team?
Like the "Bismarck" annallogy! (Had to change spelling else the word is edited)

I think he is out of form, and that may have to do with playing too much. He has lost his zest. But there needed to be some kind of lightning rod to replace a talismanic player like him and the scrumming is the obvious candidate. All those rumours mid week about him scrumming too high weren't coming from the journos....probably from inside the camp.

Strauss is a tremendous player and at this stage is probably the better bet. But the Boks without an in form Bissie somehow seem a less formidable team.
