The 100th anniversary of Gallipoli yesterday. It's amazing how these WW1 events are sliding by with so little attention ....we have changed so markedly the connection seems tenuous.
25 Apr 2015, 08:14#3
...true that Wardad tis sickening the commercialization of Anzac Day and how it's becoming more lest we forget to turn a buck. ..typical of our consumerist and materialistic society that we take something of value and dignity and turn it into yet another opportunity to make money. And the fact that we mask the whole undignified chase for the mighty dollar in the cloak of patriotism and pride only makes it sadder. I reckon the men who fought at Gallipolli would be disgusted if they knew what ANZAC day had become...

Not really true everywhere, Moz. it gets lots of coverage in the UK.
@Beeno. P!ss off if you have nothing useful to add on this topic. You are probably one of those libtarts who view soldiers, and especially fallen soldiers, as just another bunch of worthless hooligans.
25 Apr 2015, 13:18#7
Yes, Ceradyne, you are correct, it does get a lot of coverage here. And thankfully, the rights of Historical teachings are being heard again...for too long they were put to one side. So, it is now alright to remember the 21, 255 British Servicemen that died at Gallipoli without shame or being told it didn't happen. We have the Murdoch family to thank for twisting the truth for so many, thankfully sense is once again being heard.
To all those who lost their loved ones, it must have been terrible to have it treated like it did not happen for all those years, people wanted it expunged from the History books.
A terrible sacrifice and the whole of WW1 is being commemorated from start to finish here, by the Royal British Legion. I have even just been awarded " my " soldier to commemorate, as all my family survived the War; he died in June 1915 and I will gladly remember him.

Ag please. He said not to get too sanctimonious. What's discusting about that? He said nothing negative about soldiers, but rather commented on some of the posters's reactions to ANZAC day. I think some is reacting to what they think he meant, without actually looking at what was said. So Beenz, what do you think about wars and the soldiers that die in them?
25 Apr 2015, 16:06#13
And just who is being sanctimonious ? Whats disgusting is the most sanctimonious little squeezer on here telling others not to be when the whole point was sanctimonious little gits using the day to there own ends .And unless your a Kiwi or an Aussie you wont have any idea how ANZAC day which was first commemorated during WW1 for and by soldiers has now become a popular bandwagon for the sanctimonious to jump aboardI am sure all you Saffas have a similar day for your own war dead and survivors .
25 Apr 2015, 16:46#14
Problem is, Wardad, that nowadays in SA they commemorate qunts who planted bombs and killed innocent civilians in Wimpy Bar Restaurants, etc.

Actually I think HasBeen was just a bit insensitive here, trying to be a bit provocative and missing the tone. It's not a subject for mirth or dissension.
Wardad, we Saffas are so divided Im not sure we have one day that everybody will agree on....one of the anomalies of the nation. Still what annoyed me the most during the Apartheid era was the absence of credit for South African soldiers in WW2 on programmes like the World At War....as if their service had no meaning, because the Apartheid regime was so reprehensible.
Any soldier who dies for a cause deserves our respect....dying isn't easier because your political masters got it wrong.

Well if you going to criticise folk for not observing ANZAC how about the holocaust on children via abortion. Not much protest aboiut that and many other very serious matters. So you could be criticised about that not so?
As time goes by these things fade into the back ground. Witness world war 1. The Napoleonic wars Neslon and Trafalgar etcetc etc. No in time these things become more and more remote and are forgotten. Ou warpd Dud having his daily melt down! Give the twit a sedative someone!

Draad those guys did what they had too do. Many awful things happened. However raking up atrocities done many years ago is probably not helpful. Stokes old grievances etc.

Nobody here has even mentioned it. But to start criticising folk about not observing it when there are horrors going on right now where the silence is deafening is a bit much.
Also no need to get venomous about it like loose nuts warped DUD and wee denny! No use espousing noble causes but in a venomous way. Gives the plot away Bwahahahahahahhaah
25 Apr 2015, 17:44#20
Hmmm. I suddenly notice lots of tap-dancing by some who has never heard about it. Fair enough. If you haven't heard about then so be it but Beanbag, who also has never heard ANZAC day, chooses to voice an opinion about those who observe it. What a feeble attempt at getting out of it by dragging in the Napoleontic wars, etc.
25 Apr 2015, 17:46#21
Your so fecking stupid tthat what you dont get is the fact that I said ANZAC day was being used for other than its intended purpose by the likes of supermarket chains and politicians to further their own aganda ya moron,The only tool dribbling on about people NOT observing it is you ya halfwit .If you dont know anything about it dont comment idiot.

Typical case of playing the man and not the ball. No disrespect to any war heroes, but this thread has gone south because of a lot of BS. High time I start a Boer War thread and dump on all that don't confirm to the dignity of all the women and kids that were slaughtered in the concentration camps. Come on guys, don't get too sanctimonious, it's a rugga board!

Heart-felt thanks to all those who served for the country & their ideals! The reasons for war can always be questioned but not the courage of those who fought & died.
26 Apr 2015, 11:11#33
Spot-on, JW. That is something that a hell of a lot of clowns would always choose to ignore. In addition, the soldiers are quite often slated but the very moment that there is some kind of emergency the military's buttons are the first to be pressed.
I am sure that you Kiwis and Aussies could mention many examples of your own but I can remember numerous occasions were the SA Defence jumped in to help during natural disasters. In many, if not most cases, those actions were towards the very people who viewed then (the soldiers) as evil monsters. The SA Air Force helped out with rescue operations during floods on many occasions. Even on Mozambique, and that was long before 1995.
Even during the so-called Border War, the military did way more than fighting in the operational area. All national servicemen who were trained teachers were used to provide Basic Adult Education to the local Population. They did the same among the Blacks in the rural areas in SA as well. The teachers in the South Eastern Transvaal. for instance, were assigned to 113 Bn at Letaba.
Rewind to the Oceanos sea disaster off the coast of SA some years ago. The SA Air Force helicopter pilots rescued people off that sinking ship in atrocious weather conditions. Who was the first to jump to the rescue during recent floods in the UK? The military. They were filling and packing sandbags in the middle of the night and in pouring rain.

It sounds like a few sanctimonious people associating themselves with a good cause, and acting all high and mighty.
If people want to celebrate this it is up to them, but dont take the moral high ground for people that have never heard of this, or at the very least see more important things in the world that are worth being concerned about.
Over the years their has been many wars, and their will be many more. The victors write the history books. While the Soldiers may have been brave, many people do not like any glorification of war.
This is a rugby blog, and if people post controversial topics about politics and war, they should expect a wide range of responses- and not just the cliched response which is bottled as the fashion of the day.
26 Apr 2015, 16:20#36
Pot...... Kettle......... Black.......? Remember your threads that you started to have a pot shot at Christians and Christianity, SB?
Those who had no idea what ANZAC day is about, had two options. Either find out exactly what it is about and then raise a qualified opinion, or stayed the fck away from the topic.
To rubbish the event without having any idea what it is about is plain daft.

No Ceradyne. I created one thread as a joke, after the board become overwritten with constant bible basher threads about only Christians going to heaven. It got some controversial responses- which was the intention.
Not everyone is going to agree on the significance of ANZAC Day, and to get aggressive with Beeno who was clearly joking around is just being sanctimonious.
Their is people around the world starving who could do with support through celebration. Why don't the sanctimonious help a current cause where they have the potential to make a difference, instead of people that have been dead for 100 years
26 Apr 2015, 16:46#39
Forget it, my friend. You are jumping from the one conclusion after the other. You have just, for instance, assumed that people observing events like ANZAC day do not give a sh!t about other current pressing issues. That is about as daft as assuming that ANZAC day (a Kiwi and Oz thing) was about the ANC.
