You raised the issue of how Le Roux broke out of the mould and it is clear he did. He played his school rugby in the Boland - where the kids are told to play comprehensive rugby. From there he went to the Griquas - where the approach on attacking rugby is not as restrictive as it is in some other teams. If instead of going to the Griquas - he went to the Bulls - he would have ended up in a way no different from the rest.
When he started out as a Super 15 player he came under the influence of Naka - who for some reason or another has developed the theory that backline players are not there for decorative purposes and must play a role in attacking play. For that purpose they must think on their feet and do the unexpected.
There are more Le Rouxs around - but they are not properly used. It is only necessary to look at a player like Swiel - who has more ball sense in his little toe than Morne has in his whole body. There are players like Jordaan who should have stayed with Naka and would have been the talk of the town at present. He was extremely promising when playing in 2012 - but went backwards in 2013 when the whole Sharks backline malfunctioned. He started off well in the first Super 15 game this year and then it went sour in the second game - because Francois Steyn got it into his witless head not to pass a single ball in the whole game to him.
