Basque South African Cultural Exchange.

ABasque.

I read most of the Wiki stuff and a bit more, but to summarise:

1. Partly French, but mostly Spanish with a distinct language and culture.
   
2. 2. Economy is significantly better than the rest of Spain and life style better than the EU average.
   
3. Separatist war and conflict since forever, but not too much mentioned as to the reason for that after the Franco Dictatorship. No mention of specific oppression of the Basque people.
   
4. Foody culture with an emphasis on seafood...and steak as well.
5. No real info about the outdoor activities and typical recreation.

South Africa
In short from my perspective:

1. I will refrain from politics and economics etc.
2. As for food, we have a lot of influences from all over. Malay, Indian, Dutch, German, french and African. If you would however visit me tomorrow for dinner I would either braai (BBQ) Mutton or Lamb rib, lamb loin chops and boerewors(mutton and beef mince sausage with spices including coriander seeds). For a side there will be mielies(sweet corn on the cob), roasted veggies and braaibroodjies ( toasted sandwiches with cheese onions and tomato on the BBQ )
3. As an alternative to 2 above, in winter it would probably be either a lamb shank or oxtail sweet curry stew with rice, prepared in a Dutch oven. Side would be potbrood(pot bread) also baked in a dutch oven on fire/amber.
4. We will watch rugby or cricket on the telly or play cricket or touch rugby in the yard.
5. For the family vacation we will go camping at a sea resort in summer or go to the Bosveld in winter, probably the Kruger National Park.
6. For the men, hunting is also a regular pass time during the winter, but not really my thing.
7. BTW, before every test vs the AB's we all watch the Hake with the volume up. Even the wife and kids who don't watch the actual game.

 Nope. Not at all, but I'm using an opportunity.  I'm not as well travelled as you are and with the Rand and our economy where they are I never will be, so I'm broadening my horizon cheaply. No need to argue all the time, so I'm trying to do something different. 

Just pulling your leg. We had a plant near Pamplona, so I visited a few times, not during the running of the Bools. Fine food and nice people I recall. Pamplona itself is a charming town.

 I knew you were well familliar with Pamplona. Was it not your pet name for DaBools capital for a while? I knew it was in Spain, but did not know it was in Basque country till I googled Basque. All I knew about Basque were that it's in Spain and there was till recently a separatist war raging for years. ABasques' recent posts reminded me to finally find out a bit more.I'm quite content being a Boer in Beton, but I would have liked to travel abroad to experience different cultures. The net is the closesest I'll get for now, but America, Russia, Scotland, Ireland and Argentina is on my bucket list. Lu ndein and New York as 2 cities as well.

 You do realise an actual Bucket List is something a terminally ill person compiles to try to complete before the inevitable ?! Yet again, something too many folk are saying something without realising the origins !! 

A Wish List is perhaps more apt ?  

 Becs, I know well enough what it means to kick the bucket and I know perfectly well what a bucket list is. We are all bound to die, some sooner than later. I'm being proactive and creating mine before getting terminal.  Depending on the severity of illness and the strength of my mind at that stag e, a pre-made list might come in handy at the time.

 No but the point is, the term was created by someone who only had a very brief time to live and tried to fulfil the list before they died.
Now, every man and his dog creates a " Bucket List " seemingly at birth and adds to it almost at will. Instead of just having a good old fashioned Wish List or Places I Would Like to Visit List, in this instance. 
It just seems like a plague....like the damned Ice Bucket Challenge. How many folkA) knew what it was created to publiciseB) what that disease isC) actually donated any money to the cause ?????
Not many, from the looks of it.
I really do give up with people like that. 


As for you......I hope you get to visit everywhere you want to see ( and not because you have a Bucket List. Just because you have a Would Like to Visit List  )

 I think it's an under reaction, actually. 

 Lots of terms are being used outside the frame of origin. Anyway, neither Oxford nor Merriam-Webster qualifies it exclusive to being terminal. Not even a mention...can you believe that? Good enough for me.
