Six former Springboks on whether Japan-based Andries Bekker should be recalled to the Bok squad and which locks should go to the World Cup.

KRYNAUW OTTO (former Bok lock)

'Bekker will be an excellent addition to the Bok squad. He plays in Japan, so his body will be well rested and he's vastly experienced. He can also aid Victor Matfield in mentoring Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph du Toit, although Etzebeth has played more Tests than him. Bekker is a good lineout source, but also a strong ball-carrier, which will be handy in northern hemisphere conditions. Fitness permitting, Du Toit and Bekker should travel to England as backup for Matfield and Etzebeth.'

ROB LOUW (former Bok flank)

'Bekker should most certainly be recalled if he's available. With all the injuries our locks have suffered recently, his inclusion will only boost the Boks and I'm glad Heyneke Meyer sees it that way too. Another guy whose name I'd throw into the hat is Juandré Kruger. He has been in good form for Racing Métro and I'm surprised he hasn't been mentioned in the national set-up. I'd select Pieter-Steph du Toit, Eben Etzebeth, Victor Matfield and Bekker for the Rugby Championship and World Cup and if there is an injury to one of them before or during those tournaments, Willem Alberts can cover in the second row depending on the availability of Flip van der Merwe.'

KOBUS WIESE (former Bok lock)

‘We definitely need Andries Bekker’s experience and playing ability going into the World Cup. Meyer should be looking at the in-form locks, so Eben Etzebeth, Bekker and Pieter-Steph du Toit if he’s fit. Lood de Jager and Franco Mostert are playing out of their skins at the moment and are outside candidates.'

GARRY PAGEL (former Bok prop)

'If Bekker is on form, then yes, he’s a valuable asset to a Springbok side. I would have him at the World Cup, as well as Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph du Toit if he manages to get fit in time. I would pick Flip van der Merwe too for his strength on the ground as well as the tackle, and his ability to grind down the opposition.'

MARK ANDREWS (former Bok lock)

'Bekker must definitely be selected if he’s playing half-decent rugby, because we’re short on fit, quality locks. Apart from Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph du Toit, a half-fit Bekker is as good as anyone else who is fully fit. The only other lock I’d take is Flip van der Merwe, due mostly to the Bulls style of rugby Meyer will probably play. You need someone to dominate the contact and breakdown, as well as play a style of rugby that will work in northern hemisphere conditions, and Flip does that well for the Bulls.'

COBUS VISAGIE (former Bok prop)

'I'd take Bekker because the Springboks rely so much on their lineout specialists and Victor Matfield will surely not be able to play every minute of every game. Bekker is an excellent jumper and he manages the lineouts and driving mauls well. Obviously Eben Etzebeth is the No 1 lock, so he picks himself. I'd have Bekker, Victor Matfield and Juandré Kruger, all of whom have experience of calling the lineouts in Test rugby, as my other options.'

In my view Bekker was SA's greatest lock when he played for the boks and Stormers, he made many running meters, was strong in contact and can cause havoc in line-outs. I'm not convinced whether he still has what it takes at test level but it would be good if he is willing to be part of the team. Bekker and Etzebeth is a dream lock combo that any coach would consider into a world cup. Hattingh and Mostert would also be on my lock list.

Steph du Toit didn't really produce anything special, he's not the player anyone should be hyping up. There is better options than him.

We don't need him just like we don't need Matfield.......we have more depth at lock than we have ever had......there are at least 5 better locks than these guys, especially Matfield, where there are 10 better

We kept getting told that there is so much talent and depth in SA rugby, but then they look overseas for another lock....the one position that SA have untold wealth in and they want Bekker back.....the mind boggles!

I suspected that Bekker would be back in the fold at somepoint before the world cup. He was saving his body. He should be drafted into the Stormers to see how good he is.

Poly - Bekker is better than any of our depth at lock, even if he is 80% of what he was, and my bet is he is in his prime. Has a physical edge, athletic in space, looks to offload, and a great jumper. Locks age well.
SB - I agree, would be great to see some game time and I hope your hunch is right and that he intends on returning for the Boks instead of settling for his career in Japan

Bekker, a much, much better bet at this stage than Stephanie, and that's before considering Stephanie's physical uncertainties.

He is also a much better bet than the hopeless Victor Matfield.   However, none of you knows what his performances at present are like - so your opinions are boxed into reputation without regard to present performances.  That is the most dangerous way to look at selection and is the reason for the decline in test performances noticeable last year.
The type of thinking that led the rush back to Juan Smith for instance and then find a failure - one of a number of such players.   Steenkamp, Bakkies Botha, etc.
Do you want to tell anybody that the prime performance age of players are above 30 years of age?  That is the thinking which jump out every time a player like Bekker is mentioned.

No actually Victor has pretty much out played Bekker man to man ....but it never really got to the extent of "schooling him" as he so kindly did for Stephanie.

Hell this schooling invention of Mozart is back again.  Talking about repeating BS - you take the cake.
In any event there was a vast difference in performances of Matfield and Bekker.   While Matfield was moonlighting in the backline - Bekker did the hard grind up front.  Bekker was always a good lock - what was Matfield?  A light weight player easy to lift in line-outs and zero else in Tight 5 play.

For a lock, 31 is not old. Especially Bekker who struggled to stay fit. He has a lot of tread left on his tires.
This may all be moot anyway if he isn't interested or proves not to be up to standard, which I doubt.

I am not at all sure that Bekker would be interested.  In the first instance I think that Bekker had his own injury problems (with his back being a major problem) and the reason he moved to the "soft" rugby in Japan was to prolong his playing career and earn a huge pension at the same time - more than anything else.   This has for instance being the case with Jacque Fourie as well.
In any event - if there was a chance that he would change his mind on the issue there would already have been a more positive statement than the one made after SARU was questioned about the outcome of the meeting between Meyer and him.

Bullshit Bekker is NOT better than some of the young locks we have on board these days.

PSDT is twice the player Bekker is and I rate Bekker highly.......I'd much rather have Bekker in the side than old man Matfield.......no contest.......but we don't need Bekker or Matfield........not when we have Etzebeth, Willemse, Lood, PSDT, Jacques du Plessis, Ruan Botha and Lewies

The problem with Bekker is nobody knows what sort of form he is in. He could be utterly shart at the moment for all we know! That aside, if we had the pre-Japan Bekker available, in the form he was in at that time, I would certainly have him in ahead of Matfield, actually, based on THAT form, I'd start him with Etzebeth. I still like PSDT, but his injuries are an issue, and his form is also a complete guess at the moment.

The Bok locking pair should be Willemse at 4 with Etzebeth at 5...........pure grunt from Willemse, with the skill and grunt of Etzebeth.......what a pair they would make.

Physicality would be the buzz word.

Add PSDT and Jacques du Plessis to the mix......one at 7 the other on the bench.....mouth watering stuff

I have never been a fan of Bekker, but he potentially has a lot more to offer than Pieter Steph . I say potentially because I haven't seen him in quite some time. If he can bring his old Super rugby form he will be a significant addition, not just a cheap cap filling a jersey.

Steph is the new Watson....the dream that always fades the moment it materializes. For once I agree with Sapp....I would choose Willemse and Etzebeth to start in some games. In others I would start Matfield.....but in any case those would be my three locks, with Bekker in the mix if Willemse is totally out in the cold.

Actually Mike the correct form is a single "w". Once again you have produced something which is alien in nature, a figment of your imagination....try to maintain a continuous "w". Unless you are a whooping crane, it's impossible.

Don't bother to thank me. Here is the bird for easy reference:

Moz please don't lie......we went over this.....your hero achieved all of 6m in the game, never beat a single defender, conceded a line out ball, while PSDT gained 26m or something and lost no line out ball

So stop speaking utter shit.......PSDT was far better than Matfield on the day it was not even close.

You are lying and that is a fact.......the stats are there to be accessed.....so why not bring them up, for failing which I will and in the process I will expose you for your lies.

The stats were stacked in PSDT favour, three fold in fact.......so do us a favour and stop lying

By  the way Dave. Before you embarrass yourself further, the second lineout number is not lineouts lost. It's lineouts won on opposition throw...in Victors case the lineout he won when he soared over Steff to prevent the Sharks setting up the maul . You should read the definitions before you use the numbers.

Bwhaaahaaaaaa what a fucking joke, so you conclude that PSDT was weaker because of the odd missed tackle..........brilliant.......so the wonderful Vic ruled the line-outs did, with ONE win and ONE steal......geez you are a joke.

If PSDT had to move around the line-outs, it made no impression on him as he won ALL of his ball.

Matfield was as useless as he has been all season. Gaining 6m in a whole game and not getting past a single defender, sums the lightweight up......he makes no impression these days, cant impose himself physically as a lock should do......the fallacy that he reigns supreme is quickly quashed by his all of two takes all game.

But lets get to the stats that count, the ones that make a real impression.

PSDT gained 28m in the game nearly 5 times more productive than useless Matfield.....and with those gains, the real lock beat 2 defenders in the process, probably run straight over them with his physicality.

Given those stats, not a SINGLE selector would select Matfield over PSDT unless you were rugby ignorant.

As I said, you just lied about what really happened......the only schooling that took place was by the young PSDT over has been Matfield, who continues to prove what a liability he is.

His stats in that game are a disgrace......stats of a man who makes no impression, one that is long past it

Dont you get it you dumb grunt, the second stat has nothing to do with him winning his own ball....it has to do with him winning or in his case him not winning opposition ball. The ball the Matfield won on opposition ball, which you posted, is the one Stephanie lost.

Every rugby writer chose Matfield over Stephanie in that game....in fact Matfield was in both the Planet Rugby and Rugby 365 TOWs.

Your sheer stupidity and incredible ignorant arrogance is really amusing. Invariably wrong but never uncertain. You are a tonic Dave, but don't worry about it, we are not laughing with you, we are laughing at you....hahahaha.

Matfield should be the backup 5, we need the alternative to get as much game time as possible in the almost zero time before the RWC. If he is still the best option at 5, fine, but we can't go to the WC with VM as our only real 5 option.

It's a no brainer.

I called for Bekker's return ages ago.

Peoples issues with his spell in Japan is unfounded.

He's a class act and should pick up the slack quickly.

Vastly superior to old man Matfield.

wee matfield 106 kg is the weakest lock ever to play international rugby. He is also the weakest lock ever to play Super  rugby. He is also the weakest lock ever to play Currie Cup rugby. If he had played Vodacom rugby he would surely be the weakest lock ever to play Vodacom rugby. Its impossible to imagine a frotter lock. Now again, as I have issued the challenge many a time without reply, name me a papper lock! If you cant at test level work your way down to Vodacom cup. Even first team club locks are stronger.
To suggest that matfiled is better than Pieter Steph Du Toit is ludicrous in the extreme and beggars belief. Dr Mozzzzzz is trolling here!!Away with the show pony!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Away with all over the hill serial loafers etc.

Beeno, Bekker was stopped and smote in a dump tackle by Drew Mitchell! He was big, but was a tad suspect in contact at times. Matfield on the other hand had an All Black knock himself out running into him. See the difference? Either way, Bekker should be a much better bet than Steph . At least Bekker stood out in the Super XV, Steph looks very passive and subdued. I love the hunger in Eben, combine that with Victor and Bekker and all we need is another option at 4 to have a very complete lock grouping.

Another Mozart lie.  He lied about the fact that before that Matfield buggered up the line-out supposed to lead to a driving maul and when Hougaard passed the ball to De Jager instead passing it in field - De Jager was basically to near to the touchline to avoid being taken out of play in the tackle.   "Running over the touchline" is a standard Mozart lie.

Seriously?

That was a huge mistake from Hougaard to pass the ball on the outside, De Jager shouldn't be held accountable in that case for running over the touchline. I'm no fan of De Jager but that was the truth.
