Nothing outdated about our game at all. Far from it. We essentially aim to dominate the middle of the field and then attack the weaker side if the field. But we must win the territory battle with the boot. Thankfully Wales did not look good at all kicking and minus Phillips they are theoretically weaker there. However, the Welsh a lie a system team, more than personnel. As they've already shown, they can call up players outside their best XV and still pay very well. We have more speed than Australia, but we do not have a secure midfield. We must pay particular attention to the breakdown and contact situations. They scrap for the ball. The rest is about line integrity. If Damian and Kriel can hold it together we can beat Wales, but it won't be easy. Quite honestly, I would have preferred Australia. This will be a real arm wrestle. Australia give you lots of opportunities. The Welsh defend with a high line, 9 and openside winger in the line. They cover the width of the field and rush very quickly on the outside. They have the fastest line speed in the World Cup. The space at the back can be exploited as 15 has to patrol the entire backfield. Grubber would be my weapon of choice. Going wide would be suicide, unless a clear cut opportunity is open to us. That will require alot of work inside to create.

narrow attacks around the rucks and mauls without any other channels to attack does not look like a poster for the modern game in my view. schalk burger gets more quick ball than pollard so as a net result the good balls go to the forwards and the bad ones to the back line. we have not been placed under immense pressure throughout the rwc but that small attention to detail will come back to haunt us on attack. backline looks flat static and way to narrow to create any space. damian is crapping so close to the first receiver on attack that we almost every time hope he borrows he way over the advantage line. with the type of wingers we have this is borderline criminal.
our attack is easy to read and easy to defend and a well coached side can defend this withour much issues. our attack against the japs was the same and we know what happend against samoa it was a lot more dynamic and we looked a lot better. against the scots we reverted back to that narrow one off runner attack and luckily for us the scots sand bagged that game to focus on the samoans more. so we have not been tested so far. we all know we can defend well thats not the issue here but to win you need total rugby all aspects of the game needs to fire not just one or 2 areas.

we need to add more width and speed to our attack and pollard needs to be involved more in making those decisions. the welsh defence is not there strong suite but they dont like defending for long periods of time. the aussies placed them under pressure most of the time on attack so if we want to win we need to play exploit that.

We are not going to win WCs with this centre pairing. How many years have I been saying that the centres are the power of your attack, the vanguard. But attacking midfield with pods is pretty standard. Break up the defensive line rope in defenders and you should have an overlap somewhere. Forwards coming around the corner and then attack the other way with the backs. Nothing wrong with that. Meyer had gone ro great lengths to incorporate Damian and in the opposition half of the field he likes to mix it up with two layer attacks in midfield. There are options there. Where the gameplan is weak is in its adjustments to accomodate Damian and Kriel. Meyer clearly knows that Kriel cannot seal off the edge so we have been using an arrowhead defence in the muddle flushing out attackers and then with a dift driving the them towards touch with the outer defenders. So Meyer is essentially conceding that we cannot exert pressure through the two fan favourites who are rated the best pairing in world rugby. SA fans would be in for s rude awakening if they weren' t so doff.

You are arguing against a brick wall here. If you ever read one of DF's ideas about rugby - you would find that backlines are only there to defend - attacking play is not part of his vocabulary, That is why his ideal flyhalf is Morne Steyn and his favourite 12 is Fransie Steyn. He and Mozart - as well as Ceradunce and Pakie believe that the rue changes of 2008 has had no impact on rugby at all.
If you talk about wider out attack - they go bananas - that is from a rugby perspective blasphemy.

Michael, centre is no place for wings. If you cannot create space, carry the ball up, defend your channel head on and exert pressure, you will never be a world class 12. And yes defence is of primary importance at 13, it's the most difficult and most important defensive position on the field.

hahahah mike.....the game has evolved with the introduction of the elvs and one can see even countries like georgia and co have more width on attack hence them being so competitive. rules of the game favour the attacking teams more. defence is important but you wont win a rwc on that alone. you dont get points for tackles sadly hey ;p
those that cannot see that the game has moved on by my estimates will never see it. the boks are the only country in the world that is still sticking to this style of play even the dogmatic english has embraced a more dynamic style. we saw some amazing rugby in the first 2 games of the champs against the kiwis and the aussies but due to the lack of rounding off we could not take our chances. and in typical meyer fashion his knee jerk reaction was to go back to the brain less kick and chase smash it up type of rugby that yields short term results but leaves strings of injury's to our players. dare i say if we where in the pool of death i dont think we would have gone any further than the poms.

The Boks are not playing antiquated rugby. That is another myth due to his past association with the Bulls, who also didn't play dinosaur rugby either! The game has not changed as much as you reckon and certainly not in the ways you think. Defence is what separates top sides from the stragglers. Had our defence been better we would have won the RC so that's food for thought.

See the comments of DF above - not a word about attacking play - only defense. See what I said - backline players must in his book be defensing dummies,
Incidentally nobody doubts the need for sound defense - but to say or imply that is the only function centers should be credited with defense and the rest of their performance counts for nothing - is to my mind rubbis h.

golden rule of rugby df....the space outwide is created on the inside. with you dont play with speed and width into space you cannot create space. rugby is not a difficult game to play but if you over coach a team so such a extend that the players are robots. game pattern dictates the game not the players. so while you are harping on about the centres you fail to understand they are just merely a component of a overall attacking system. no centre pairing in the world can create space without the work being done by either the forwards and 8 9 10 on the inside. the reason we dont breed centres are because we are obsessed with the forwards style of rugby that was effective 10 years ago but due to the rule changes as become less and less effective as time has gone on. the game has changed but we have not.
