The decision to bowl first was silly. Cant see anything to justify that. It seemed to me the pitch started to crumble a bit very early. This had lead to some uneven bounce. The dismal of Smith was silly. Why not duck under a ball at head hight. Alviro went for a cut shot and the ball might well have gone for a four. I have sympathy for Faf the unflustered. The ball he got jumped off a length and was simply unplayable.Amla got a beauty but looked untroubled till then.
The guy I would drop is Duminy. He simply is not a good enough bat. Bring in De Koch.Pietersen always somehow contributes. We need a top flight spinner. Even
De Lange I agree is an option for Mclaren but leaves the batting a bit thin. For the first time in years we do not have a world class allrounder. Mclaren wasnt too bad.Interestingly only two Oz batsman got going. We have one in AB.Our bowlers also need to fire up.

Ab showing how to deal with Mitch and no doubt the others are getting the message. The cracks certainly helped Mitch but expect our bowlers to show OZ something when they bat.Me anwhile Proteas let's build a total and save this test.
I note ou black udder squeaking from the sidelines while the giants of cricket battle it out.

Unfortunately the pitch started playing up when we were batting.
Cant see us winning the test but we must draw the test and punish the impudent Ozzies in second test.
As Kepler says keep hands low and leave short balls alone. Neutralise Mirtch and punish the others.

We are being completely owned in this test.
Can, you can bang on all you like that the Oz attack is the best in the game......its simply is not and the rankings prove that.

Johnson is on fire right now, so will give you that......your attack is a one man show.

Harris and Siddle are average at best.

Johnson has exposed Alviro and Faf for the average bats they are.......we need to move on to technically efficient replacements.......Smith has got away with his technical flaws but we cant expect everyone to.
Robin and Ryan as bog ordinary bowlers have to also go.......sadly we wont see these changes soon enough.

Saffex

I saw this coming for a while now - lets not blame certain players and leave the others unscathed.

Smith is a very dodgy opening bat - he fails more often than he succeeds.   I know we cannot change him - and will have to live with him, but to expect constant acceptable performances from him - is like asking for manna from heaven.  Ge is bound to fail more than he succeeds.

The second guy who did well on occasion was Alviro Petersen - a mice guy - but he should have been replaced a year ago.  Faf is not a test opening batsman and that is what was a disaster for him- he had to virtually open the batting - because the other two produced nothing and went out early.

Then there are the idea to play Peterson - he is absolutely useless - and has always been.   McClaren I can live with - but nor Petersen.   In any event - some will cry it is the loss of Kallis that brought this on - but I do not think that was really the case.   There were two many poor players that stayed in the team on reputation.

I think they should change the squad and bring in performers such as Abbott, De Kock, Miller and write of most of the remaining passengers.   They cannot be worse than the present players mentioned.

Well Oom do you still think Kallis was a problem? As usual your selective memory is so funny.
The fact is we have problems. Amla has lost form, Kallis is gone and even Steyn and Morkel are struggling with physical problems. And none of new players look vaguely in the class of the old guys.
Philander has also been cut down to size. He is a nice swing bowler, who will be successful if swing is around. In good batting conditions, he is pretty playable. Morkel at 145 ks should be opening but why doesn't he have a plan of attack. If Donald is doing us any good, it's hard to see.

No Mike, wake up you dont have a test average of 50 and end up ranked 8th in the world currently if you are poor bat.......you are speaking shit.

The issue with our side is that we have too many bats that are technically flawed and the sheer pace and intimidation by Johnson has exposed them. There is nothing to beat sheer hostile pace bowling that Johnson is delivering right now.......credit to the man he has hit a purple patch and is loving it.

The technically good bats like AB, Amla and even JP handled his bowling well.......AB was phenomenal....Amla got out to one that kept low from Siddle and JP threw his wicket away against the average Lyons.

Faf and Alviro were exposed technically and my guess is Johnson is going to chew them up all series.......they dont have the skill to handle him.

Smith is a hard nut and will come back fighting.

Steyn is not well and it shows, he should be fighting fire with fire and replicating Johnson. I disagree with Moz on Philander, he always extracts swing, but has not his straps this test. Morkel to is injured, which is an issue.

Petersen and McLaren are just piss poor and complete liabilities. McLaren is a sad excuse for an allrounder......he can't bat and is an average medium paced bowler. Petersen cant turn the ball, JP our part timer turns it more and is a better spinner. We dont need Petersen, play JP as our allrounder.

Ditch Alviro for Elgar or v/Zyl, ditch Faf for de Kock and have AB bat at 4, ditch McLaren for the raw pace of de Lange and ditch Petersen for the hard hitting Miller.

Our test side should be:

1. Smith 2. Elgar 3. Amla 4. AB 5. JP 6. de Kock(w) 7. Miller 8. Philander 9. Steyn 10. Morkel 11. de Lange

This side has no passengers and if they cant keep us at the top of the pile then no players will.

This current side looks undercooked with 4 passengers in it and will not retain the number 1 spot for too much longer if it is retained.

I think Philander is a fine stock bowler. But unless it's a really bad pitch, his blend 0f 128k swingers are not opening material against Oz. He was played with ease and let up the pressure on one side. Morkel and Steyn are both capable of bowling hostile stuff at 145 ks....they need to do that. They also need to look closely at Johnson's body line attack. Nobody is better equipped to do that than Morkel.

One could weep when one sees how ordinary Pietersen and JP are as spinners. Jp really doesnt appear to have the head for test cricket. One failure after another.
Faf before this innings had a 60 test average. He got the best ball of the innings in my opinion - it was unplayable. Was not exposed at all.Where is De Lange? Is he injured?
Moz made a comment I made to a friend today. Both Styen and Philander thrive when the ball swings. Steyn can still be effective when it is not swinging. Philander lacks penetration unless he gets swing.
Kallis is a massive loss for the first time in decades we dont have a world class allrounder.

I agree with your comment on Faf Hasbeen. That was a brutal ball, up till then he looked comfortable. He may or may not be test class, but that was certainly not a reason to conclude he isn't.

Moz I just hope the oaks have learnt from AB how to play Mitchell.
Mitchell hit a few cracks not is not as big a problem as is made out. So he bowls a FEW klm faster on average than Morkel. Pity Steyn was not himself as well.

Can't bat, can't bowl and can't field....an old saying but how apt. Damned if I know how having Oz down 4 wickets on the first day before the luncheon break was a bad decision to bowl but so says the popular opinion on this board. I mean, when exactly did you say it was a bad decision....at the close of play on the first day or at the luncheon break? I can well imagine the smiles on the faces of the Proteas at the break... their failure to capitalise on a fruitful morning of play had nothing to do with the decision to bat first.

Truth be told and I said this well before the team was selected, the team is full of average players and pretenders......Mitch exposed that fact and the skill of AB De Villiers to handle him underscores it even further.

Denny will be the first to tell you that I thought Philander to be bog ordinary when he first hit the scene, but he soon proved me wrong as he just kept on taking wickets test after test and was the second fastest man to 100 test wickets ever.......this guy is far more than he appears to be and I think we tend to label him as stock because he does not have the pace of Steyn.

Moz, the Oz openers are Warner and Rogers......hardly world beaters......pretty damn average really.......much like most of their batting line up except for the very impressive Clarke and youngster Smith......Haddin is their Boucher in the middle order.......but for the rest......come on.

But agree 100% Steyn and Morkel lacked aggression but then again one is ill, the other injured......so this may account for the lack of aggro.......it was disappointing to see.

Beeno you are speaking shit re JP, he is a better spinner than  Petersen, which tells me he is better than anything else we have on offer in SA.

JP handled Johnson well and then failed when choosing to attack the spinner........he was not beaten, he let that one slip after doing all the hard work to get to 26.

Faf has an awful technique with his ridiculously wide grip..........his average was 100 odd and is slipping test by test for I doubt you can live at this level with that flaw......he has the Smith determination though, so I will give him that.....one thing he should not be doing is batting at 4........that is the spot for your best test bat......Faf is not even close........Faf could be retained at 6 to see if that grit can keep him going........but I suspect it wont.

That's correct, we did say the team would consist of average players and we named, Faf, Ryan Who, Alviro and the pie chucker Robin as standouts....the out of form Duminy and Amla were a concern.

My choice remains, De Lange in to bolster a four pronged pace attack and  De Kock in for Faf. I don't know the leading openers but the sooner they replace the useless Alviro the better....Smith looms large under my microscope and perhaps his time is up?

@ saffex haahaha youre a comedian....
For a bunch of average aussies who cant play cricket we sure are showing the highly overrated saffas a thing or two...
Mentally very fragile is how i would discribe G Smith and this rubs off on the entire team... Aussies just dismantled the overrated poms the same way - we took out their leader and the team capitulated...
Unless weather interferes looks like Aussies going to take this test comfortably...
BTW Warner pretty lucky to get dropped 3xs.... but for a test team @ home who are meant to be no 1 the saffas are pretty average at best.... lol....
MOrkel is a excellent bowler - i didnt really see enough of him on first day to realise he is up there in pace and bounce but he seems injury plagued but i maintain my opinon on phillander... AVERAGE at best he would be australia's 10th best bowler we got at least another 5 bowlers better than his standard....
Slow swing bowling just doesnt cut it against this aussie team....
HAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA  go you aussies!!!!!!!

Red, lets be honest here.......this Oz side is pretty average, you have class acts in Clarke, Smith and Johnson...... middle of the road in Warner, Watson, Siddle and Harris..........the rest are hardly special.
The SA side has 4 passengers in it in Alviro, Faf, Petersen and McLaren.......sad to see really when there are the likes of de Kock, David Miller and de Lange lying on the beach

I agree Siddle is average but line and length bowling is his thing... I like cummins, pattison and starc in his place but Siddle just is the super fit workhorse.

Im surprised Harris didn't get any wickets but once again he's a line and length bowler with decent pace...

Warner is hit and miss - but when he hits he is spectacular to watch

ROgers - may be on his way out - but served his purpose v England

WAtson has mental issues - but handy bowler so if fit will be in the team

Doolan - I like the look of this kid - he seems to have plenty of time when batting and has a relaxed but effective technique - I think he will continue to develop

MArsh - well he has been hot & cold but his form is undeniable atm

Haddin - senior player and leader in the team - had a cracker vs poms so solid team man

Clarke - up there with best bats in the cricket world

Lyon - not too fussed by but think theres at least 3-4 new spinners coming throught he ranks - but his form vs England has locked his spot for the time being.

All in all there is room for improvement but I think its a fine line of getting the dynamics right and getting the skills right - ROgers is a classic example of this...

Morne Morkel is an underachiever,  he is talented enough to be taking a lot more wickets, someone should tell him to pitch the ball a metre up instead of a metre back of a length which time and again sees the ball zipping through over the head of the Keeper. Fat bloody use that is. If he pitched further up  he would do some serious damage around the rib cage and batsmen would be forced to play off the backfoot. For variation he should then mix in a couple of yorkers and pronto we have our very own Joel Garner.
