HM (interesting initials) was given a specific task when appointed. And that task, it may surprise some posters, was not to pick the best potential rugby player in each position. It was to win the then TN, now RC and win the RWC.

In pursuing that task it is very likely he wont reward all the best players. When he has a veteran that gives him specific attributes he values....he may very well eschew the new youngster with great potential but unknown test credentials. That's okay....hard on the youngster, but his time will come.

Still if you ask the quesion .....who has been left out in the last three years, perhaps only the quick dismissal of de Allende should apply. Players like Lappies, who was being touted a year ago just like Kriel, have no been shown to be empty suits. One thinks of Goosen, Lomp, Hendricks, Mvovo etc.

And in fact some of the newbies still in the mix....like Step and Coetzee are not as good as many thought.

So this year comes around and one week before our first RC match against Oz the howling is heard around the land.....why not Kriel, why not Faf....why not Vorster in the match 23?

Well those who watched the big match against the Stormers would have noted Vorster did nothing until after the bell. That Faf's tactical kicking was in effect piss poor.....and that Kriel was matched by Kolisi and Carr, players who one week later were blown out the water by the Brumbies.

In effect with the other Kriel at centre, de Allende back at 12, Whitely  and players like Koch on the bench HM is being quite inclusive. That's fine, but it's not his real job and I would have preferred to see Schalk at number 8 and Malherbe at tighthead on the bench.

Still if he remembers that winning in his priority all will be well. I think HM lost the plot on the YE tour against Ireland and Wales with a few "off"  but popular selections. Screw popularity, choose the team that will win.

All that is fine - but then the players that really let the Springboks down since Meyer's appointment has in the main being so-called experienced players.   In his first year Meyer himself said he selected players he knew and that resulted in 14 Bulls players making their appearance in matches - either in the starting line-up or from the bench. Insofar as the players he knew was concerned - it was like a revolving door.
Players like Morne Steyn was so poor Meyer was forced to drop him.  Fat Fransie was so unfit - he got injured in training.  He went through outside centers like a sausage machine and he ignored form players - while selecting players he "knew".  The position in the RC was a disaster, we competed with the Argentinians to be bottom of the log and our ranking drop to 3rd in world rugby.
The result was Meyer started to lick the backside of retired players to return to play Springbok rugby - that already happened on the EOYT in 2012 - but got faster in 2013.   There was a slight improvement in 2013 - but that could to a large extend be credited to players that was selected for the first time - ie Vermeulen and Willie le Roux (the latter putting some fire into the near-dead Springbok backline.   During the RC we lost both tests to the AB's.   Who buggered up badly in those two tests.  In the Eden Park test it was in the first instance the red card against Bismarck - which was a refereeing mistake - but added to that was mindless and useless play by Morne Steyn.   In the Ellis Park test the loss could be directly attributed to Morne Steyn, Willem Alberts and JJ Engelbrecht in missing key tackles and serious errors in execution.   In two of the tests he brought in Fourie du Preez - food in the local match against the Aussies and just about average and insignificant a week later in the AB test at Ellis Park.
Meyer did not fix the problem and brought back Bakkies Botha and  into the mix.  He produced nothing in the tests he played in.  He called back Du Preez from Japan for two tests.  Same story - good in the Wales test and insignificant a week later.  He brought in Jacque Fourie - whose defense was slightly better than Engelbrecht - but whose pace was gone and he was useless when carrying balls.  He was clearly not of much value in the tests he played in and was not really fit enough for international rugby.
Come the June tests in 2014 and Matfield is brought back.   The first test against the Welsh was fine - Willie le Roux won the test for them.  Matfield started of well in line-outs and moonlighting behind mauls he made enough tackles - but was totally absent from Tight 5 play.   The situation nearly backfired in the second Wales test.  Morne Steyn was pathetic and the unfit Du Preez got injured.   The Tight 5 lost the battle up front and the Springboks nearly got run over.   Then the RC followed and our Tight 5 disintegrated completely.   Jannie du Plessis was the great liability in that and so was Steenkamp.   Juan Smith was brought back and he was competing for being the worst player on the field.   In the succeeding test against the Aussies Pienaar got injured as well - and Morne destroyed whatever of the Springboks' chances in that tournament in the Perth test.   By then it was clear that we were going nowhere.  Matfield's contribution dwindled to the insignificant and his contribution to Tight 5 play was non-existent.  In the  Wellington test there was a chance that the Springboks could surprisingly win and in a five meter line-out the idea was to start a driving maul - but Matfield fumbled the ball and the idea went to pieces.   In the succeeding Ellis Park test the Springboks were leading until Matfield lost a line-out ball in a line-out throw by the Springboks and the AB's attacked and scored a try - taking the lead the first time in the match.   it was Lambie who had to convert a 55 meter penalty to ensure a Springbok win.   So what happened in the disastrous EOYT in 2014?  The Tight 5 folded badly and the same experienced players was to blame.
When you go through the above was it the new players whose names came up constantly in losing matches?  NO it was the geriatric duds whom Meyer constantly selected.   We still have gone nowhere in making sure about the filling of certain positions.   Some of Meyer's constant selections was piss-poor in Super 15 this year and there is not a snowballs hope in hell they would be better in tests.   Players who should never have been brought into the mix after their initial retirement was poor in all tests played.
INSTEAD OF BUILDING UP A SOUND TEAM OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS MEYER WAS FLOUNDERING AROUND AND WE DO NOT HAVE A STRONGER TEAM IN 2015 THAN WE HAD IN 2012.   MATTER OF FACT IF THE 2014 PERFORMANCES IN TESTS ARE BORNE IN MIND THE TEAM WAS SIGNIFICANTLY WEAKER.
I am sorry Mozart - but my reading of the situation has been that we have gone backward since 2012 and that the players you laud constantly is largely to blame for that downward slide.   The answer is not to "screw popularity" - but to select teams with a winning chance and that does not include the major liabilities Meyer refuses to let go.
Incidentally you have been dead wrong about a number of players you mentioned above and to prove it I am going to quote the stats in the :ions - Stormers game you made reference to:-
 Kolisi0/000/1/52000018/10/010/0          Kriel0/001/2/154604007/05/000/0
de Jongh0/100/2/318100210/00/000/0
Vorster0/002/2/95335116/20/010/0
Vorster played the fool with your favourite De Jongh and went past him 3 times when De Jongh did his Kuridrani defense by vanishing from site.   And the three attempts did not all three happen after the bell as you said.   So as per normal your interpretation of what happened in that match was baloney.
Have fun in that dreamworld of yours.

A tissue of lies....I don't even know where to start. But how did Vorster go past de Jongh 3 times when de Jongh missed no tackles. I'm afraid you are going to find it's de Allende that missed him after the bell, when he made most of his metres.

Do some research Tokkie I am going to play golf. After which we have a national group of about 100 coming to see our gardens....I will catch up with your findings later.

Not lies - but uncomfortable truths.   De Jongh vanishes and do not do tackles when up against stronger players like Kuridrani and Vorster or like happened in the tests in 2012. That does not count as missed tackles since he made no tackle attempts and left it to others to clear up the resultant mess.
As to the rest - it is what really happened and denial will serve no purpose.  It is the dud geriatrics Meyer loves to play that ultimately let down the Springbok team.
Have fun with the golf and the garden display afterwards.   We are battling on this side to get the garden into proper control and develop it into a colourful place of beauty.  Things are moving slowly to settle in - but there is still a massive amount of work to do.   Painting, planting, etc.
Tonight we are having potjiekos for the first time in this house.

Very good post Moz, and so true regarding the EOYT. He should have backed Pollard no matter what and kept Hougaard. By losing his nerve and selecting a dud halfback combination he did lose the plot. Meyers only teal failing is that he doesn't have the courage to do what he knows is right under pressure. Jake would defiantly stand his ground and was vindicated time and again. Recount the Watson fiasco, or how the "fans" were calling for Du Preez, Smith, Butch, Monty, Os, Schalk and Smit to be dropped ahead of the 2007 WC. The fans don't know what they are talking about 99% of the time and don't ever understand the game they want the Boks to play. So I say stuff them. They showed no regret when the popular calls they demanded failed, they attacked Meyer all the same. He must man up and stick to his convictions. If you don't have that confidence in yourself as a leader you have nothing in my opinion .

Another Desert Disaster invention.  Nobody called for the dropping of the players listed by him iro the 2007 WC.   The fans knows what they are talking about when they call for certain players to be dropped - they can see with their own eyes what goes wrong in the team and since they pay for the mess they have the right to make comments.
In the case of the Sharks last year - the fans saw what was coming and stayed away from the games in droves.   They could not stand to watch what was dished up and that ultimately caused White to lose his job.
The fans in most cases follow the comments of experts and that is where the Desert Disaster's wheels come off.  The experts know what they talk about - jesters like Mozart and Desert Disaster refuse to see what their favourites in reality produce and criticize players they don't like based on their fairy tales.

HM's only job was to do SA rugby proud.....we all had high hopes for this guy as his domestic record was pretty handy, but fact is he had been out of rugby for some time at the time of his appointment.
It became clear early on that HM was completely out of touch with how modern rugby is won, but worst of all was his inability to let go of the past. His conservatism shines bright in his reluctance to embrace the new. He ignorantly thinks he can take on the world with players he is comfortable with, players he coached at various stages in their careers....players that are long past their prime......the list is endless.......Kirchner, Habana, Fourie, Jean, Olivier, Morne, Pienaar, du Preez, Jannie, Steenkamp, Heinke v/d Merwe, Brits, Bakkies, Matfield, Louw, Smith, Schalk and Alberts......of these only Habana and Schalk are worthy.
HM has been a massive, massive let down......this at a time when SA has more rugby depth than ever before......I have been following our beloved game for years and never have we been blessed with so much rich young talent across the board.
Instead of using this talent to our advantage, HM has been the king of missed opportunities........look no further than his love affair with the clearly passed it Matfield......imagine being a national coach and selecting 38 year old Matfield ahead of the likes of Willemse, PSDT, Lood, Jacques du Plessis, Ruan Botha and Lewies......its beyond comprehension and sums HM up to the T.
To sum HM up.... he would rather select Kirchner ahead of Andries Coetzee or Taute
He would rather select Hendricks and Mvovo, ahead of Senatla, Sithole, Combrink, v/Wyk, Rhule or Kolbe
Fourie and Jean ahead of Vorster, Odendaal, JJ or Frans Venter.....chances are he would select these two ahead of de Allende and Serfontein.
Morne ahead of Goosen
Pienaar and du Preez ahead of Faf and Hougaard
Matfield ahead of Jacques du Plessis, Willemse, Lewies or Ruan Botha
Louw and Alberts ahead of Jaco Kriel, Jacques du Plessis, Carr, Labs, Arno Botha, CJ Stander, Mtembu and v/d Walt.
HM is on the slip look no further than his 4 losses last year of the 9 major tests played.
He sells Bok rugby short in every way.......poor selector, poor player manager and out of touch with how test rugby is played......our RC and WC are a lost cause in his hands....we just have to hope he gets the boot post the WC and we select someone worthy.......a Kiwi

Unfortunately SARU would not ever appoint a foreign coach to coach the Springboks and neither will they allow the franchises to appoint them.  Problem is that a foreign coach worth his salt will select teams on merit without regard to race and that would no0t be acceptable to the Government or to SARU.
As to the issue of the WC it is generally felt also by players that we will never get anywhere near the semis and the reasons given is the joke made by Meyer in selecting players way past their sell-by date.   When I speak to my friends in Australia - all avid Springbok supporters - they laugh about selections such as Matfield, Alberts and Fourie and say Meyer must be nuts.
However, we have people like Mozart and Desert Disaster who live in the past and go ballistic in praising some of Meyers dud selections and criticize some players endlessly - not caring whether what they wrote is based on lies and misrepresentation.
Tragic - but true.

Anyone who thinks Meyer is doing us justice needs their head checked.
A foreign coach would have more than enough players of colour to work with......all merit players.......so that is no excuse.....the list is large.....Kolbe, Sithole, Senatla, Hendricks, Rhule, JP, Habana, Skosan, Mjekevu, Mapoe, Mnisi, Jantjies, Coleman, Paige, Luithers, Nyakane, Beast, Scara, Mbonambi, Oupa, Kolisi, Carr, Notsche and Mtembu.
The game against the World 15 would have been the perfect opportunity to have a look at the youngsters given you cant afford to experiment in the RC.
I would have selected a side along the lines of:
15. Jessie Kriel 14. Senatla 13. Vorster 12. de Allende 11. Sithole 10. Jantjies 9. Faf 1. Kitshoff 2. Strauss(c) 3. Malherbe 4. Willemse 5. Etzebeth 6. Jaco Kriel 7. Jacques du Plessis 8. Arno Botha
16. Scara 17. Nyakane 18. Marcel v/d Merwe 19. Ruan Botha 20. Kolisi 21. Reinach 22. Pollard 23. Frans Venter

I predict that if we win, they'll say it was a moral loss. Any problems and it was because of Victor bringing down the pack and "moonlighting" in the backline; and Meyer can't coach and should have selected the Baby Boks instead because the younger they are the better they are... it's a fact of life as Michael says! Morne will probably have something to di with it as well. As Michael has already stated, Morne has lost tests without even being on the field many times before. LMAO!

 Listen Desert Disaster
I am not stupid like you who condemned for a match which never took place.
I will make a prediction and that is that the SA Team would win - despite the four handicaps I mentioned above.
We will soon know who Meyer is taking to Australia - my personal info Morne would not be in that squad, because he is still useless and we do not need him to donate another win to the Aussies like he did in Perth last year .

Another list from Sapp....this time a player of colour list. There he includes our best wing by a mile...Habana....but not in the team he would select. This is totally consistent though...Rommel was correct, Sapp wanted to drop Os, Monty and Schalk before our RWC title.

Um my side was a bunch of youngsters bar Strauss at 2, Moz......try wake up.......would I select Habana in my best 23......no, for he is no longer the best wing in SA.......the likes of Sithole, Senatla, v/Wyk and Combrink are better than old man Habana these days......if you had been watching him play this year......you would have to concede the same......but instead you would just bullshit and tell us he is saving himself for the WC......just like useless Matfield has done all year
