I have not seen many comments on the structure of the upcoming Rugby Championship, and I recognise that with only one game against each country there is limited scope to make it absolutely fair.
However, a cursory glance shows that the draw favours some teams and makes it much, much harder for others.
To keep the system fairer and to make for a better spectacle, what about a revolutionary new point system?
I have devised a scoring system based on there being a top three sides in terms of quality, and then Argentina. When you play a top three side at home you score 1 point (you have got home advantage), but minus 1 for playing them away.
However, if you play Argentina at home you get minus 1 (you are wasting home advantage), so plus 1 for playing Argentina away.
Australia plays South Africa and New Zealand at home, and Argentina away, giving a total of plus 3.
South Africa plays New Zealand and Argentina at home, and Australia away, giving a total of minus 1.
New Zealand plays Argentina at home and is away to Australia and South Africa, giving a total of minus 3.
Argentina plays Australia at home and is away to New Zealand and South Africa, giving a total of minus 1.
So far, it seems to me that someone is being very kind to the Wallabies. If we were to institute this new scheme, would it make the Championship more watchable?
