Something to bring Dr Moz up todate.

Ex Sport 24

Cape Town - Rain and England go hand in hand, and when one applies that logic to rugby it is easy to think of sodden fields and poor handling.

But Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer believes that the days of winning a World Cup with shrewd tactical kicking and keeping the ball close to the pack are over, and he expects an open, free-flowing and attacking approach when the tournament kicks off in London on September 18.

"There’s a perception out there that it will be slow and sluggish in muddy conditions, but visiting all the venues, most of the (them) have brilliant surfaces," Meyer said in Brisbane this week.

"They are mostly soccer fields which is very thin grass and quite fast. Gone are the days when the World Cup is just a short ball in play, mostly scrummaging and kicking for points.

"Guys will attack and take each other on so you can’t just rely on the kicking game and you have to be fit and have guys who can play at a high pace.

"I think that’s where rugby has changed the most in the last two years – it’s an unbelievable pace. Suddenly there are smaller 9s coming back into the game because everybody wants quick ball. I think the World Cup is going to be played at more or less the same pace at Super Rugby."

Meyer, who is preparing his side for battle against Australia on Saturday, added that there were a number of sides who possessed the ability to challenge for honours at the tournament.

"I especially think the northern hemisphere teams are moving the ball as well," he said.

"It’s going to be a spectacle, probably the toughest World Cup ever, because even the minor unions have improved. They’ve all got quality coa ches and they’re all well prepared, probably more than the southern hemisphere."

Poor Mozart will have a seizure if he reads this.   Since others have been called fools when they expressed similar sentiments - w ill he call Meyer a coach as well?

Kicking won't win a World Cup despite the fact that kicking has won all but one World Cup. I guarantee you that the winner of the World Cup will have a solid kicking game. I also guarantee you that when we get knocked out it'll be because we pack tactical kickers.

I am sure Meyer in this case means aimless and inaccurate kicking for which players like Morne and Frans Steyn are so well known.  He certainly also mean that repetitive kicking for the hell of kicking (also as per the two Steyns) are not match-winners.
The thickest bums on this site are those who believe that kicking is the only game in town irrespective of how aimless kicks are. Problem is that they think that players who are really poor in execution and cannot read games and take decisions  - like the Steyns -  will solve all problems by madly kicking balls away and handing over possession  to the opposition continuously.
And one of the bums pretend other members are ignorant - what a farce.

No one aspect will win the WC, but no aspect is more likely than kicking to be the crucial difference....Stransky in 95, Wilkinson in 2003, Monty in 2007... Donald in 2011. Morne in 2015?

RWC is overrated, to put all the emphasis of 4 years work into one game (which is all the RWC is really about, the final) is just crazy, but im a kiwi, and we have higher expectations i guess.

but this why meyer and the Boks are in trouble, meyer has won nothing in his Bok coaching tenure, the Boks and SA rugby for that matter havent won anything for the last 6 years.
All Blacks are the most consistent team in all of rugby and prob of any sporting team competing at the top lvl, and the bulk of that success has been done with attacking rugby.
the skills involved to execute that brand of rugby have been sharpened over the years thanks to the positive rugby encouraged in NZ from all levels, to all personal.
we might have the odd game where kicking wins us a match, but the formula the All Blacks have at the moment is the right one, and it will see us win the RWC.

Boks have only just now realised that their 10 man rugby game wont work, something most saffa fans have realised for the last couple of years, and what kiwis have known for the last 25 years,

Hell the dolt wants to kill the kill the bok backline and send defense packing by mentioning Morne.  He will be the one player that will lose us games he played in all on his own.  Remember the Perth test last year?
I do not think that Meyer only thought about conversion of penalties - he was thinking of kicking out of hand as well.  That is where Morne specializes in BS kicking - inaccurate and aimless - just handing possession over to the opposition.  Remember the 2012 Dunedin test where the commentators called two of his kicks BS - and that on the air.  Standard practice by Morne - the robot.

Actually the more relevant thing to remember is the S15,  the Lions series,  the 2009 Trinations, this year's top14. The acheivements of a proven winner. Pollard would start in my team...Morne the ice man would be on the bench.

I would rather have a usable flyhalf on the bench who will convert penalties as well.  Remember the Ellis Park test last year when Lambie made the 55 meter conversion that you called "not a pressure kick", thus winning the game for the Springboks.  That is being an ice man who would not bugger up the backline, screw defense  and will not make a fluff of his kicks out of hand or miss penalty line kicks - a Morne specialist regular occurrence.
When will you ever learn that Morne is not an international standard flyhalf - not even a club starting flyhalf when the first choice youngster is available?   He would not make any Super 15 flyhalf spot in either New Zealand or Australia and not get selected as flyhalf by any of the other 10 rated rugby nations in the world.  They would take one look at him and do a Stade Francais bench with him.

Sushi it's a different kind of challenge...as much to do with guts as with athleticism. The Boks have the best winning ratio at the WC, in part because we have always had great kickers.
Oz and the Boks have won the WC on foreign soil...that remains the holy grail of rugby.

Tokkie Lambie is a confused flyhalf, he was a deer in the headlights against Wales. We don't need a deer in the headlights at 10.

Morne making a pressure kick?  The last one was in the Lions game in 2009 I believe.  I would not trust him for any money.  Remember Dunedin, Ellis Park in 2014 - but also a host of other games.  If he fluffs goal kicks in ordinary tests - what makes you think he would do differently in WC games.
"Sushi it's a different kind of challenge...as much to do with guts as with athleticism".  Why exclude another essential requirement - namely intelligent reading of the game and decisionmaking of which the robotic Morne has near to zero ability.

"We have always had great kickers" - but they were good players in other facets of the game - something Morne is definitely NOT.  Get real.

That is not even test rugby you now come up with.  When I pointed out that Lambie made that kick in the Ellis Park test last year - which you did say was not a pressure kick - your response was   "Sushi it's a different kind of challenge."
Lets face facts - a club game is a good indicator in your book - a test is not.  Can you really get any funnier?   Talking about bias - this is a record-breaker.

Nobody was more surprised when that ball went over against the ABs than Lambie. I would take more notice of the sitters he missed against England under pressure....kicks he was expected to make....those are the real pressure kicks.

The Springboks beat England with Lambie at flyhalf - so what pressure are you talking about?  The pressure caused as a result of the deterioration of our tight 5 perhaps?
So when Lambie kicks a conversion it is not a pressure kick - if he misses one it was a pressure kick?   Weird thinking it seems to me.

@mozzie,

"Sushi it's a different kind of challenge...as much to do with guts as with athleticism. The Boks have the best winning ratio at the WC, in part because we have always had great kickers.i understand why u would advocate a kicking game, seeing as that the Boks are the only team to play and never score a try in a RWC final.

agree that its a different kind of challenge, and while i concede the Boks have the better ratio, we all know thats going to change.
RWC is still in its infancy stage, theres been a total of 7 to date, what will the RWC tally look like in 50 years time??? im very confident that like all other tournaments that NZ rugby participated in, it will be clearly in our favour.

look at the winners of the  first 7 TriNats which started in 1996
NZ won 4
wallabies won 2
Boks won 1

now fast forward to 2011 the year of the last TriNats
NZ won 11
Boks won 3
wallabies won 3

the same level of domination will happen in the RWC as more and more RWCs are played.

"Oz and the Boks have won the WC on foreign soil...that remains the holy grail of rugby."
dont forget england.

and anyoine can win the RWC should circumstances fall upon them the way it did the 2007 Boks, their only competition during the whole tournament was england.

u know its an cheap RWC, if u can win it without paying the TriNats tax, meaning
not having to face either the All blacks, wallabies or Boks in a RWC final, is pretty much the dream scenario for any team \and can lead to anyione winning the RWC.

and i disagree about the holy grail. there have been 3 different champions on foreign soil in the RWC, despite there being only 7 so far.
but how many countries have won every tests they played in the professional era??? only one team has managed conquer that mountain mozzie, the mighty mighty All Blacks.
despite there being two decades worth of professional rugby, only one team has managed this feat of 100% winning ratio, o_O
that is the real holy grail.

its also why the All Blacks have been ranked no1 in the rankings for over 90% of the time.
IRB rankings are a reflection of who is the greatest rugby team in the wolrd, as it incorporates every single test played.
RWC is a champion status ion name alone, ill never expect u to agree though, ur a saffa who supports a Boks team who consistently wins little or in the case of the last 5 years, nothing.

now be a good fellow and dont dob me in to the admins,

 Sasue
My problem with the AB's is they win everything in between WC's and then goes dilly in the tournament itself.
I will be quite frank with you - I do not think the AB's will win the upcoming WC.   The main reason is they are suffering from what I call World Cup Disease.  The main symptoms of that disease is that players of winning teams of WC's are played way past their sell-by date and there are a  number of those in the AB squad.
However, of one thing I am sure - the Springboks will NOT won the WC.  They have double the symptoms of the AB's - Meyer wants to use 2007 WC players in 2015 and that is even worse.

Naruto, your mouth must be sore from all that blowing of your own trumpet!!! Nobody is denying that the AB's are the best rugby side in the professional era, except maybe for Beeno, but his issues are far larger than any psychologist could repair.
Right, I am a South African, and I hereby state that the All blacks have been the best international side since the start of the professional era. The New Zealand Super Rugby sides have been the most successful since the advent of professional rugby. A fern is more suitable food for a herbivore than a Springbok is. Jonah Lomu's fringe to shaved head ratio is better than that of any rugby player in history!
Now I get that you are just trying to get a reaction out of the SA posters here, but damn man, your gloat is just nauseating!!!!!

Are you on the sauce or something? I presume you mean all their tests in one season or something? distinctly recall quite a few memorable losses and a few spectacular nose dives by the MABS, so you might think about rephrasing a bit there.
LMFAO! Pull your head outta your arse bro and you might smell the coffee! RWC's are all about absorbing the pressure in crunch games and being able to utilise the few opportunities on offer, and this is where NZ has been lacking in the last 20 years. Being the best by some margin, but only being able to lift Bill on two occasions, 24 years apart! To top it all, they almost dropped the thing from the silver platter 4 years ago....playing at HOME against a team that lost to freaking Thonga in the group stages AND a team that won their semi final by a measly one point, playing against  14 men for more than 3/4 of the match! They won by ONE POINT!

As for 10 man rugby, the MABS have been utilising it quite often as well, their version is just a bit better, making the 10 man game less obvious.

I think a fair minded rugby person might concede that winning the WC on foreign fields is harder than winning at home and a greater accomplishment. I'm sure the AB fans would admit that, in the unlikely even that they win it abroad.

It may be harder to win the tournament abroad, but damn the AB's are looking good to do just that! Their stats in World Cups may not flatter them, but they have won equally as many as us and the Aussies. So it is hardly as if they have been a total failure at World Cup's either! I am not a statistics monger and I am too lazy to go and verify the exact number, but the AB's have lost two or three games in the last four years. NZ have just cleaned up in Super Rugby, and the National side looked fantastic against the Argies today! Look, Ab's are the team to beat, and have been for ages! It is not impossible to do, but any team facing the All Blacks, home or away, go in as the underdogs .
So Moz, what I am trying to say is this, it is NOT an "unlikely even that they will win it it abroad." It is in fact very likely that they will win it. I am sure the betting odds will say exactly that. If you think I am wrong, back yourself and go an place your bets against them.

Nothing is certain in the WC - bar the fact that SA will never win the Tournament.  There are way to many problems with team selection that Meyer caused by constant running back to geriatrics with the result that at this late stage there is no time to build a decent side.   To add to that there is no certainty about the injury recovery of Duane Vermeulen, Jean de Villiers and Pieter-Steph du Toit - while we are stuck with seriously defective geriatrics as well.
I am not entirely sold on the AB's winning the WC - it may happen, but my feeling is they re not going to make it.

Mike, there are a few teams in with a shout, it is not a certainty that the AB's will win it. All I am saying is they are strong favourites, and rightly so!
From another point of view, I am sure that any team facing the All Blacks at this world cup, would rather face any other team! ANY team playing against them is the underdog.
We just seem to have this mentality in SA of discounting the AB's at World Cups. Based on what logic does that makes sense? They have won just as many Cup as us! They are massively dominant at the moment, and have been for a long time. They are the current holders of the trophy, so choking is also apparently not a factor anymore. Etc etc.
I hope we win and I really hope the AB's don't, but the sad truth is, they are the team to beat!

Always being named as the favourite is no fun, it seems to result in fear of losing in the RWC. Being the underdog is easier you can unify the team around it and know you have nothing to lose. I would be happier if E ngland or SA was named as the favourite.

Give us the bent refs favouring both NZ and OZ and the record would be completely different. Its of no value whatsoever of quoting contrived results arrived at due to bent refs.
Fundamental mistake by saSUE  - not the first such error either! Hahahahahahahahaha.

Bloo ...even if NZ is 80 per cent likely to beat every play off team, the stats compute to only a  50 per cent chance of beating three in a row. And I think the odds against the Boks and Oz are longer than that...perhaps 65 per cent in a knockout game.
