Process to appoint a new Vodacom Bulls Head Coach for Super Rugby 2016 ongoing.

• Extension of CEO, Barend van Graan’s contract until January 2019 (from February 2015).

The Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd and the Blue Bulls Company Board of Directors in a statement on Saturday 13 June 2015 confirmed a number of coaching changes to the Vodacom Bulls and Vodacom Blue Bulls structures with regards to the Absa Currie Cup 2015 season and the Vodacom Super Rugby season in 2016.

The Board of Directors indicated that Frans Ludeke will step down from his position as Super Rugby and Currie Cup Head Coach with immediate effect. Discussions with Ludeke about his future is ongoing as well as the process to appoint a new Head Coach for Super Rugby 2016. An announcement will be made as soon as this has been finalized.

The Blue Bulls Company Board of Directors also confirmed a decision in February 2015 to extend the contract of CEO, Barend van Graan until January 2019.

The Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd is also pleased to announce the appointment of Nollis Marais as new head coach of the Vodacom Blue Bulls for the 2015 Absa Currie Cup season with immediate effect.

The 43-year old Marais said of his appointment: "This is a dream come true for me and something I have always wanted to do and worked towards in the various Blue Bulls structures. I would like to thank John Newbury, Chairman of the Board as well as other directors, the BBRU and president Gert Wessels and also the BBC and CEO, Barend van Graan for their confidence in me to take over this important position. I would also like to thank Frans Ludeke, Johann van Graan and Heyneke Meyer who served as mentors to me."

Marais, an accredited IRB (World Rugby) level 3 coach, has been involved with coaching at all levels in the union, starting his coaching career way back in 2003 as Under-15 coach of Overkruin High School in Pretoria. He has progressed through the ranks and in recent years coached UP-Tuks in the Varsity Cup (2010-15), the Vodacom Blue Bulls Under-21's (2011-2015) and the Vodacom Blue Bulls Vodacom Cup team (2013-15), winning the Varsity Cup and Absa Under-21 Provincial Championship on his way to becoming the new Currie Cup coach.

He will meet with the various stakeholders soon and promises total commitment and passion to make sure the Vodacom Blue Bulls continue as one of the most successful teams in the history of the Absa Currie Cup.

"We will have a change in approach in the way we do things and play the game and I am excited about the mixture of talent we have between the youngsters in our system and the senior players. I have worked with all but five of the players in our squad before, so I’m very keen to continue in my efforts to assist them in becoming the best players they can be."

Marais called on the Blue Bulls supporters and sponsors to rally behind the team. "Every player and member of management will leave nothing out there on the field in our effort to make you proud of us. We can only succeed with all your support, but will earn it the hard way, by delivering on the field," Marais said.

• New coaching teams for the Vodacom Blue Bulls Currie Cup, U21 Currie Cup and U19 Currie Cup teams respectively will be announced and communicated early next week.

Naas also says he is worried about a player beoming a coach. He correctly says no  and adds that it takes years to become a top coach.Breyton asking why victor the ego matfiled!Naas says you DONT GO FROM PLAYER TO COACH AT THE TOP LEVEL.
Nass uses example of Manchester United making a player head coach. Mallet agrees no. maybe as an assistant.
Needs to go through a learning curve.
So glad to hear some sense at last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Naas asks what happened to the bulle. Answer Naas a tired gameplan and poor thinking by coaching staff.
Bulle must look for world class coach. They are avery rich Union. All this is for the good in the longer term.Cerundance windpomp dry your eyes oak!
Sharks and Stormers also must get it right. We need to get 4 teams in top 6. Lions are progressing and so must the big three.
Bissie will get a klap from J annie for not passing to him so he could get his first try I think it is. Hahahahahahahaha

The Bulls coaching set-up was a disaster and that was clear during the past 2 Super 15 seasons.   Ludeke was coach of the Lions when they were at an all-time low and then went to the Bulls as Head coach - inheriting a very good squad.   At the time I thought it was a mistake of the Bulls to appoint him as it was clear that he had no idea about team renewal and his game plan was based on the kick and chase game.
He subsequently appointed -
*   Slaptjips as backline coach - according to Naas not a good option for an ex-player to take over coaching without coaching experience; and
*    Matfield as the attack coach.
Both were disastrous appointments and they have contributed to the flight of younger players who saw no reason to remain with the Bulls and the destruction of the backline of the Bulls - the center situation became the graveyard for potentially good players.
Fact is they also managed to take out of the Bulls backline any creative play and had a detrimental impact on the performances of Hougaard at scrummie and Jan Serfontein at center.
The fact that the coaches of the SA franchises in Super 15 need to be changed became evident over the past two years.   Like the case was last year with the Sharks, the Stormers took the top of the SA Conference log this year, not because the team was so strong, but because the rest of the franchises was in such a sorry state.  I doubt very much whether the Stormers would win their play-off game against the Brumbies, but if they do they will not beat the Waratahs next week.   They do not have a good enough all-round team to go much further.
So what is the situation now?   The Stormers must find a decent coach to replace Coetzee.   I am sure that Gert Smal would come up with the right coach - not another Coetzee to bugger up team selection.   The next person to go would be the Sharks - Gold is just going nowhere fast.
I think that the Bulls will have a problem in finding a decent coach from SA resources and if I think they should consider a coach like John Mitchell as a potential coach.  I think that would help a lot.

This is ridiculous. I was never a Ludeke fan, but after the 2008 capitulation he rebuilt that team and reformed its gameplan several times and won championships. After the mass exodus of legends and other stalwarts prior to the 2012 season, he took that team to second on the log and kept them competitive for several more seasons. He has eight years super rugby experience and is the most successful South African super rugby coach.

 Letsal
Why have the Bulls been bleeding talent?   Because of the poor player management by Ludeke and his inability to deal with team renewal.  The Bulls lost a lot of younger talent because they had no hope for a reasonable rugby career under the incompetent in charge.
Nobody wants "frantic attacking rugby" - one of your craziest statements ever.   The Bulls went backwards fast since 2012 and the key reasons were the involvement of Matfield as attacking coach and in the last two seasons as a player.
The main problem has been that the combination of Ludeke and Matfield was killing any thinking rugby and turned the flyhalf into a kicking unit and the centers into ineffective crashballers,   In the meantime. they turned the Tight 5 into a Tight 3 - one of the worst forward combinations imaginable - and ended up with Stegmann and Jane Spies as loosies this year as well.   What do you expect from that show?   Nothing is the answer.
The Bulls did well in contracting Nyakane, Strauss and Labuschagne and Ludeke under-utilized them preferring to play Greyling and the penalty machine Stegmann  while playing Labuschagne out of position whenever he used him.  Donkey thinking is Ludeke's stock in trade.
He was going nowhere with the Bulls and the be st thing the Bulls could have done was to get rid of him.

I agree with Lestat to a point on this. I was very unhappy when they first appointed Ludeke due to his failures at the Lions, but he did win 2 Super Rugby titles! Even if you inherit a strong team, it still takes some doing to win the competition twice. After that however, the laws and the game changed, and I feel he was unable to keep pace with the necessary changes. After the mass exodus of players in 2011, I expected the Bulls to implode, but they stayed relatively competitive...for a while! So it is obvious he is not a complete dolt. Over the last three years however, Ludeke and the Bulls have slowly been getting further and further behind the trend, and even though they had a squad that could realistically compete for the title this year, their lack of strategic change has rendered them unable to do so.
So, goodbye Ludeke, thanks for what you did achieve, but you have passed your expiry date by 3 years, and you are no longer competent.

Bluebok, the law changes were implemented in 2008, the first year Ludeke had the team, and the next law change was in 2010 when the Bulls played some exceptional attacking rugby.

L, it took time for other teams to implement the changes effectively. In the years immediately after the law changes, using the old style of play which the Bulls had perfected, they were still able to win. Also, they had a number of world class players in their prime. Look, the Bulls game plan can be effective, even in the current game, but there is very little margin for error. Also, if you know exactly what strategy an opposing team plans to implement, it is easier to prepare for.
The long and the short of it is this, the Bulls have slowly but surely been getting further and further away from being title contenders. What do you attribute that to?

Every team knows what the other is going to do. New Zealand and the Crusaders have been using the same patterns for nearly two decades. I don't believe there is a gameplan issue, I believe there is a personnel issue.
Who do the Bulls have that is truly world class? Pollard, maybe Hougaard. Added to that they cannot scrum. And have a weak backline defence. The pieces simply aren't there.

I agree that the front row is a problem, but it has been weak for ages now, with the resources at the Bulls disposal that issue should have been identified, BY THE COACH, and dealt with ages ago. The coach is not ONLY responsible for strategy you know! Also, I don't agree with you regarding the personal. Firstly, you have been a massive Matfield campaigner, but I notice you have omitted him in your list of world class players???
Spies, Serfontein, Engelbrecht, Basson, Nyakane, Matfield, Pollard, Hougard, Flip VD Merwe, Strauss just off the top of my head, all players worthy of Bok call ups by Meyer, who you defend vigorously. Well if they are not good enough for the Bulls, then Meyer must be a bloody fool for giving them Bok caps! Now depending on which side of the fence you sit, many of the Bulls players are there or there abouts with regards to a bok call up. It is a good squad! And they should easily have made it into the top six, but they did not, and if that is the case, which it is, why did they not get it right? When you have the Bulls financial backing, and a good solid squad, and your team still does not perform, you are left with two parties to blame, God or the coach, and I am pretty sure God has not been doing any sports betting lately!

I forgot to mention Strauss and Victor. But Spies, Basson, JJ, and the rest are not my preferences. And Flip has ruled himself out of test rugby. Overall I do not regard the Bulls loose trio, backline or props as anything special. Many of these players should have no caps as far as I'm concerned.

 Bloubok
When Mallett took over from Carel du Plessis he took over an excellent team as well - a team who scored record wins over the British and Irish Lions and the Aussies.   He made a few changes  and his success rate was outstanding - but the wheels came off when he got rid of the captain and had to start with squad rebuilding.
Ludeke was in the same position with regard to the Bulls.   He lasted from 2008-10 and the wheels came off in his case as well.   The problem was that Ludeke did not do any squad rebuilding and he never ever tried to replace the extremely weak Bulls prop set-up.   That should have been identified earlier as a problem - even though Nyakane was contracted and Van der Merwe came to the fore, their usage was on the basis of a lottery ticket - while Ludeke preferred the useless scrummagers in Kruger and Greyling.
The lock situation was equally weird.   The penalty machine Flippie was preferred to Willemse and Du Plessis - and the re-appearance of Matfield put the Bulls at a serious disadvantage, since his contribution to Tight 5 play is minus-zero.
The loosie usage was equally weird.   He kept on using Stegmann and fumbled around with Du Plessis, Botha and Labuschagne, while preferring Spies at 8.
The result was there never was a proper-functioning forward combination in place and it showed badly in the last two seasons.
As you so rightly pointed out the Bulls playing style began getting further and further behind the rule changes.   The so-called kick-and-chase game may have been effective up to a point - but in the final analysis it is a dead duck in modern rugby.

You are not worth debating rugby with as you are so piss poor.......I mean this sincerely, I cant be asked as you are that bad......I'd derive more pleasure in debating rugby with a football supporter.

If your views carried some weight, I'd entertain you......they are so off the page that I assume you are either fucking stupid or just taking the piss......either way, I cant be asked.
