Ex Supersport

Springbok "lock" wee Victor Matfiled may have one eye on the Rugby World Cup, but he has made it clear he wants to coach the Vodacom Bulls at some stage.

With coach Frans Ludeke’s job coming under the spotlight at a Board of Directors’ meeting on Friday, Matfield’s role in the Bulls setup will also be under the microscope after another disappointing season where the Bulls missed out on the playoffs of the Vodacom Super Rugby tournament.

There was a proposal put to the Board before the Bulls went on tour that Ludeke become Director of Rugby and that Matfield and one other take over the coaching role for 2016, but results on the tour have put a lot of pressure, with calls for change coming from fans and ex-Bulls legends like Naas Botha.

Matfield already runs the attack for the Bulls, and has a dual player-coaching role for the team at the moment, and has been signed to take over as coach after the Rugby World Cup later this year.

But Friday’s meeting could change all that, especially with the unhappiness that on the tour the Bulls dropped from 2nd overall and topping the South African conference to ninth and third in the SA conference. Their losing streak overseas stretches to 11 games now and it is the second consecutive season they missed out on the playoffs. On top of this the last time they won any trophy was in 2010.

Talking at a function at the British High Commission to celebrate #100days to the Rugby World Cup on Wednesday, Matfield made it clear he wanted to coach the Bulls, and was hoping that somehow a decision would be taken on Friday to make that happen.(Bwhahahahahahaha what in the world makes this swollen ego think he has earned that right? He has NO self perspective!!)

“Of course. I’ve always said after rugby I want to coach, and no better place than at the Bulls,” Matfield said.

“We have to see what happens, what they decide on Friday and how things are going to work. It isn’t something I can really talk about now but I’ve said it before, I’d love to coach and it would be fantastic if I could coach at the Bulls.”

Matfield said he wanted to remain part of the game that has been most of his life, and that was his motivation to start coaching when he retires for the second time in November.

“It’s rugby – rugby has been my life. We wonder sometimes why we keep on doing this to ourselves and staying in this game, there are always expectations,” he added.

“If it doesn’t go well it is really tough. I know the fans hate to lose, but for the players and people in that environment it is just tough. If anyone has been around Loftus in the past few days, you can just feel the disappointment in the group. I think when you have been fortunate enough to have won trophies, when you have been a part of a team that has been the best in the world – whether the Springboks or the Bulls, you want to be part of that again and that makes up for all the bad times.

Although the agreement with SA Rugby for him to rest meant he never got a final game this weekend to say goodbye to the Loftus fans, Matfield says he is happy with what he has achieved at the union.

“It is difficult for me, I came back to play for the Springboks – the Bulls are always close to my heart, but it almost more coaching there, helping out as a player. It will be tough to never play again at Loftus (hoooooorah!!). I would have loved to have played this weekend again, maybe my last game.

“But with the Boks and my resting I wouldn’t play. The Bulls will always be special to me, and hopefully I’ll have a few more years there in another capacity. I love the Bulls, and everything has to come to an end. I had a few more games for the Bulls than I thought I would in the last two years, it’s been good times.”

Now looking ahead to the World Cup, he knows the Boks have the firepower to put up an excellent show in England and maybe, just maybe surprise everyone and win the World Cup for the third time. (Yes so please retire for good NOW!!!)

That is why I came out of retirement, I told Heyneke that this is really a coaching staff and a team that can win the World Cup. For me to be a part of it will be fantastic, I don’t know what my role will be, playing in the squad or helping the youngsters, as long as I can be part of this it will be great for me. There are less than 100 days to go, I’m feeling good and hopefully I can be part of it.”

Matfield is very much part of the Bok plans for the tournament, but depending on what the Bulls decide on Friday, his future at his home union may not be as certain as his future in the playing jersey.

Meyer dont let the conman take you in!

Victor Matfield is not the best South African lock ever let alone the world. Heck, he's not even the greatest Northern Transvaal / Blue Bulls lock ever! That honour would go to Frik du Preez with Matfield and Krynauw Otto fighting it out for second place.

I've not been a Matfield-basher on this board and I recognise that he's been a great player (and even now still adds some value - in the lineouts anyway) but I question whether he'd automatically crack a world list of the top 10 locks ever.

Colin Meads, Frik du Preez, Willie-John McBride, Martin Johnson, John Eales and Gordon Brown are some of the certainties and Matfield's in a group with the likes of Krynauw Otto, Mark Andrews, Fabian Pelous, Paul O'Connell, Bill Beaumont and a few others fighting for the remaining places in the top 10.

I'll say this much . . . Matfield's career is not over yet and if he plays a significant part in a Springbok RWC victory this year then he'll definitely be in the elite group mentioned earlier and he'll have some claim to being the best ever . . . but only a fool would call a player the greatest ever before his career is even over!

I would not want to see Matfield anywhere near the RWC squad for 2015.   Matfield was in the past a good lock - at this stage he is way too weak physically to be of any value as a lock.  He does not produce anything of value as a lock anymore - and moonlights in the backline to make a few tackles.
There is one issue raised above which clearly indicates why the Bulls went backwards over the past two years - and that relates to Matfield being the attack coach of the Bulls.   It kills half of the attacking abilities of the Bulls and accounts for the drop in performance of Pollard and the centers in the latter part of Super 15 this year.   The idea to have a forward as att ack coach is madness and that is a fact of life.
I can only see the Bulls going backwards in performance next year with Matfield in the coaching set-up.   That is probably the reason why Slaptjips left that set-up - knowing that whatsoever he wants to achieve, Matfield will overrule him.

Ou Maaik, Matfield's general play is crap and it's never been world class, but you can't deny he's been one of the best lineout exponents of his generation.

How was the move? Are you settled in?

The move was fine - but it will  take some time to really get settled in.   We are still unpacking and cleaning things.  We managed to get the computer and DSTV going - but there is a lot of other work to be done to finalize before I can really say we have settled in.
In the meantime things are really beginning to look up - meat is cheap and so is vegetables.   The house is just about the right size, but there are some minor changes we would like to make and in general I am happy with the situation here.

Matfield....Man of the Match in the  2007 RWC final. Are there other locks who have been the best of the best....maybe Eales also got this honour. But that alone puts Victor in the race.

And the fact is his dominance of the most important set piece altered the way opponents played the game.....just recently after Matfield ripped one off Steph' s throw the Sharks moved Steph all over the lineout to avoid Victor.

Moz, Matfield is one of the best locks in the modern era! I think most level headed people will agree to that, BUT, two things need to be taken into account. Firstly, he is no longer at his best! He is still good, but it has been a while since he was able to dominate as he did in that final in 2007. Secondly, the game changes all the time, and as things stand now, teams can no longer afford to have just the number four lock doing the hard grunt. They need both locks to impose themselves physically. It is this facet of play that makes PSDT a more favoured candidate. We can argue all day about weather or not Matfield dominated him in the line-outs in the Bulls/Sharks game, but the fact that posters are so split on the matter is testament to how close the players are in this facet of play. Physically however, Matfield simply cannot match PSDT. I am 36, and I don't care what anyone says, my body is just not as good physically as it was five or six years ago. He is two odd years OLDER than me!
For now lets put injuries aside, because it is still early days and one cannot call PSDT injury prone just yet. He may well just have been a little unlucky on that front. Anyway, Matfield avoids injury, by avoiding the type of play that can get him injured. Unfortunately, that means he is not doing his job on the field completely.

When Tokkie was first extolling the virtues of PSDT I told him the lad wasn't physically ready for the kind of game he was trying to play.....that he was going to be injured a lot. Turned out to be true. I don't think he is vaguely in the Etzebeth league for power and over exerting his body to play like him. Heart of a Lion....body of a very young lion....not a good combination.

It has to be tough for the kid....you are the grandson of Piet "Spiere" du Toit. But Piet was 6' 2" and weighed 225lbs.  Things have moved on and you aren't automatically the strongest kid on the block.

You may be right about the need for two power locks, but I think Matfield makes so many other contributions he offsets that. The biggest complaint about Bok tight forwards is usually that they are not mobile and can't handle. Yet we disparage the one Bok tight forward who is world class in those two aspects.

And as we see from weight lifting and boxing strength often peaks in the late thirties.

BB, that's my take on it as well. He should be back up at best, but he will be one of the king pins in the team, and if Jean is not ready, probably the captain as well.

Don't forget long distance runners, they often peak in their thirties and even forties. However, I think we can pretty freely establish from the much younger average age of retirement of professional rugby players, that 35 is generally considered old in rugby terms.
Back to Matfield, He is not a dominant force at line-out time anymore, and just watch this past weekends Stormers game, and I'm sure you'll agree that Etzebeth in no way lacks mobility. And no, I do not think PSDT is the player Etzebeth is, but he does have the physical attributes required and he is still very young! So he could well still establish himself. Fair point that he may be playing a little beyond his capabilities, but I think it is still too early to make that call. We shall see! Lastly, Matfield's leadership is probably also worth noting, but there are enough senior players in the Bok mix to help in that regard.

Moonlighting in the backline is definitely not the function of a lock anymore and we got run over by the NH countries with Matfield at lock.
I do not think that Du Toit is all that weak - definitely physically far stronger than Matfield is.  He is also a harder worker and can handle balls as well or even better than Matfield do at this stage.   Fact is he is more difficult to tackle than Matfield - and that is where the problem comes in.   Matfield is ALL reputation - with very little substance at present.
I agree about Matfield having been very good in 2007 - but by 2011 he was out of all previous form and his return to play rugby is just not producing the goods anymore.  We cannot afford a purely reputation player in the squad - we need players that can produce the goods.   Matfield is just not meeting the latter requirement anymore.

I think it will be about three weeks before I can really say everything has been sorted out.   There are some building work I want done - the DSTV and ADSL systems permanently installed - some repainting done, etc.   Nothing major though.    I need to buy some new furniture as well and some new bedding as well.
Moving house is a pain in the neck and a bad one at that.   Same as Matfield.

Blik, you have it wrong, a common misconception amongst non Capies. Not as cold as inland and only wet for a week a piece in June and July and 2 weeks in August. Few days in April,  May and September. Our cold is also not as dry as inland and much more bearable. You lot see the worst of it on TV and asume it's like that the whole time. IMHO, the worst part of Cape weather is the South Easter in some areas....when the rest of the country needs rain. If it blows here, you get rain.  We don't mind the sacrice though, so don't feel bad on our behave the next time it rains

What a laugh this thread is.We have the bitter enders still trying to convince everyone that matfiled is a lock even the greatest ever .BWAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HILARIOUS STUFF!!!
Then we have the oaks who realise that matfiled is now a big liability. But these oaks were once suporters of wee matfiled so try to save face by saying matfiled is over the hill. The facts though are simple. Wee matfiled has been an unmitigated disaster from day one. He never ever was a lock.
His single attribute was a good pair of hands but nothing else. He cant even jump - he is lifted. Worst "lock" we have ever had.
The best news we can hope for is Meyer waking up and sending the show pony packing.
