hey are two players constantly targeted by referees. Mesam does push the boundaries. McCaw has been wrongly named as a cheat who gets away with it by intimidating refs. Refs think by continuing pinging and binning him they are showing courage. However 9 times out of 10 the refs are getting it hopelessly wrong. Last night McCaw came through the gate and stayed on his feet until he was cleaned out. Was not affecting the ball illegally yet somehow was binned. The UK media and co have duped the refs ino believing McCaw is cheating. On that basis he has become a liability. The ABs are going to need to have 15 players on the field at all times. The intention of the UK media was to have McCaw targeted and the super refs have been happy to be fooled.

...in an ideal world, holding up the 2015 RWC should shut all his detractors up well and good... followed by him receiving his knighthood and taking over the reins as the new coach of the Crusaders... and then we'll all live happily ever after...

That is the way the NZ supporters see it - but is it really the case?  McCaw always played on the fringe of legality - that was his strong point of his game.  He was treated very leniently in the past by the referees and effectively got away with "murder".
Fact is that he is not the loosie he used to be and is slower than he was in the past.  That results in two things to his detriment, namely -
*   he is caught out more easily in what he does; and*   he is more inclined to play illegally to off-set the affect of his advancing rugby age.
He seems to be getting more and more penalties given against him - also by the NZ and Aussie referees - and that is an indication that he is overdue to retire from rugby.

I agree Hakwa, maybe the refs will get it out of their system so that in the RWC he will be given a free pass

Mike I think you may be on to something here. Any successful fetcher lives on the edge of legal, so it is no fault of Richies that he got away with what he did. Just like all fetchers, he will push his luck as far as the ref will allow him to. I don't hold that against him at all. However, and this is where I agree with you Mike, I think with age he has lost that little edge he had over most other players. The split second of speed that he has lost could well be the difference between get away with something, and not. Maybe the referees are keeping a closer eye on him as well, but at his age, there is just no way he will be as fast as he was in his twenty's.

McCaw has the luxury of doing anything he wants. How many other fetchers can sit on their backside on the oppositions side of the ruck and fight the opposition 9 for the ball?

I have seen Pokok regularly going for the ball with his knees supported by his own players body on the ground or the opposition and fiddling with the ball on the ground. That is plain cheating.

McCaw is more your likeable charming rogue . Beanhead agrees with me.

"In a fair fight he (Richie McCaw) has never been in the top 5 fetchers in the world at any time."

Wehe! So Richie McCaw has never been one of the top 5 fetchers in the world at any time in his career?

LMAO!

If any Kiwis feel even slightly insulted by this laughable statement, my advice is to take it from whence it comes . . . this is the same buffoon who thinks Zane Kirchner is an international superstar!

He got away with lots, but was a very good player and served NZ well over the years. Good enough to lead the AB's in one last RWC? You betcha! Not nearly as good as he was, but still more than good enough.

A few corrections needed. mcaaaaw plays illegally because he has has been allowed by bent down under refs to get away with it. We ourselves have bent over backwards to accomodate this oak for some obscure reason.
The cheers when he was carded in the warts game said it all. The thought on everyones mind why has this not happened far, far more often!!!!!
Draad anybody can look good if he plays illegally and gets away with it. The praise the kbbs pour on wee mcaaaw does not reflect well on them.

May I commend to all kbbs frantically searching for that rare animal a genuine kiwi hero, the esteemed Justin Marshall - a man who invariably points out the error of kiwi ways!
Can Justin's parent be kiwi?

There's a fair number of Kiwis wondering whether McCaw & Carter are past their sell-by-date although I'm sure that they have the support of the majority & they'll be at RWC .

I have my concerns about both but I know they are being managed to try & get the best out of them. Carter has played a fair few games now with no injuries & he is slowly getting form. He still seems to take a few lateral steps before he passes the ball & doesn't hit the line with pace often enough but he is improving.
McCaw is getting enough game time to keep his game conditioning but is a long way from his best. The goal is to get him tuned during the RC as final prep for the RWC.
We will see what each has to offer when we get to the RC & RWC.
Other key players are being rested, all have some sort of injury but IMO would be playing more in s15 if it was not for the RWC coming up, e.g. Kaino, Retallic, Barret & others. It is good that they are being rested & will fully recover from injuries & niggles. They will get enough game time prior to the RWC. No worries there. In the mean time other players are emerging as stars. All looks good in NZ rugby (hooker is still a position that we lack depth in but Hikka Elliot is playing some good rugby lately).

Richie McCaw keeps turning the other cheek.

Crusaders flanker McCaw was loudly jeered by a ribald Sydney crowd when yellow carded last weekend, crudely rammed in the back by a wild-eyed Will Skelton and witnessed team-mate Sam Whitelock get flipped in an illegal tip-tackle.

What happened during the 32-22 loss to the Waratahs at ANZ Stadium could make the meekest of Kiwi rugby fans scream obscenities at referee Marius van der Westhuizen, but McCaw doesn't want to poison his reputation by having a crack at the officials.

So what do you make of the standard of refereeing, champ?

"That's a loaded question isn't it?" McCaw says. "I wouldn't mind playing next week, too."

To criticise the officials is to bring the Sanzar competition into disrepute and that, in turn, means McCaw could risk being censured.

Yet is a fair question. And given McCaw's standing in the game, it jars that he cannot publicly state what everyone knows - that the officiating needs to improve.

Given the way van der Westhuizen froze when Skelton rumbled around the park dishing out cheap shots, McCaw would be justified in questioning why the giant Auckland-born lock wasn't yellow (or red) carded - like Tolu Latu - after Whitelock was illegally tackled.

Or why Skelton wasn't binned for crudely barging McCaw in such a cowardly manner. Or why he escaped penalty for dropping his shoulder into Whitelock when he was on the deck. Or why late shoulder charges on Dan Carter and Tom Taylor weren't detected.

Clearly van der Westhuizen was dozing behind the whistle because the judiciary have since suspended Skelton and Latu for two and four weeks respectively, pending an appeal by the Waratahs.

"I just hate looking at blame," McCaw adds. "I always say that to our team. Look at ourselves first; if we are squeaky clean with everything we do, then we might be able to start blaming other people.

"It is a fluid game and human elements come into it ... it is a bloody tough game to ref."

Two comments of note the kbbs have overlooked due to their poor comprehension levelsYet is a fair question. And given McCaw's standing in the game, it jars that he cannot publicly state what everyone knows - that the officiating needs to improve.

Exactly what Beeno has been telling the kibbs. These poor ears are now squeling blue murder for very minor indescretions by the warts. Imagine if things really got rough it would bea river of tesrs!   You get the picture!!

However this is the cruncher oaks:I just hate looking at blame," McCaw adds. "I always say that to our team. Look at ourselves first; if we are squeaky clean with everything we do, then we might be able to start blaming other people.
Wee mcaaaaw knows only too well how completely bent the old crusties approach to the game is and particularly his own game. Hence he very wisely siuggest the old crusts just zip it.  The old crusts aere the most devious side in the world. Hahahahaahahahahahaha man does this sentence give the game away.Kbbs should be thankful Beeno has unmasked this awful corruption!!!!!!!!!! Read carefully what mcaaaaw says oaks! What a give away!!! HahhahahahahahahahahahahaLestat realises that you cant rate a player who has not played withing the laws. Unfortunately the kiwi s will be begging the Queen to knight this rascal!  Its an upside down world.

McCaw has always played to a different drumbeat. He used to be a half beat quicker than everyone, but lately he's a half beat slow and being found out.
I think NZ has better options, especially since the "fetcher" role is something everyone on the team is expected to perform.

Mccaw has gotten away with a lot in his career and he is paying the price now finally!
In the test 3 years ago in SA was the worst moment for me.
He was lying on the ground and the ref looks to the backline- and Mccaw leans into the ruck and knock the ball out of the scrummies hands- and the ref thinks it is a knock on.

Just in time for the world cup and project Mccaw. He is probably saving himself this season, and keeping some of his tricks under-wrap for the WorldCup.

 @Sharkbok,

did u notice how he singlehandedly defended the line against the Canes?

ps in honesty I was hoping the ref would card one of the Saders players so the Canes could score a try and get a bonus point and top the NZ Conference - the Highlanders are good travellers.

By the way I am picking the Highlanders to walk away with the 2015 Super15 Title .

The Christian in me Denny forgave him his failings (if any) in defending his line against the Canes. The secular person in me could not find any fault in his defending his own line via ref on the field, TMO etc (although i was hoping desperately for them to find something against Richie or any of the other boys)
What about you Denny - would have thought the blind in you had put the other glass eye into the other socket, your vision might improve

Interesting that we have so many kiwi teams in contention, sort of debunks the "theory" of some posters who said we that central contracting stacked one team so we could win. Or is it that we have too many players to stack in one team Kiwi rugby is in good shape!

Kiwi rugby is looking very good at the moment. Any other team hoping to win the RWC has nothing more than an outside chance. Sounds negative from an SA poster and I wish it was not so, but it is!
The AB's have cleaned up over the last four years, and this year only a fool would argue the NZ dominance in Super Rugby. That said, the AB's have been firm favourites for every world cup and have only won 2! So bring it!!!
