Morné targets starting spot [....removed.....] ; 458  6

Springbok flyhalf Morné Steyn kicks for goal

Morné Steyn wants to make the Springbok No 10 jersey his own in the lead-up to the World Cup.JON CARDINELLI reports.

While injured Bok halfbacks Cobus Reinach and Pat Lambie are on the mend, they are unlikely to start in the first game of the international season. The Boks will field a different halfback combination to the one that started in Europe last November.

Heyneke Meyer has expressed his concern over the number of injuries in the extended squad. However, the injuries to key players will provide fringe players with an opportunity.

The battle for World Cup places – be it a starting position, spot on the bench, or place in the final 31-man World Cup squad – will commence in the coming weeks. Whomever features in the next five internationals will have a chance to convince Meyer of their value.

One man who will be looking to make the most of any opportunity is Morné Steyn. The flyhalf scored 58 points for Stade Français during the recent Top 14 play-offs, and ultimately steered the Parisian club to the title.

In an interview for an upcoming edition of SA Rugbymagazine, Steyn told me that he is determined to carry that form through to the Test season. Steyn also wants to go to the World Cup as a starting option rather than a reserve.

‘This is the last World Cup I can go to, and I want that No 10 jersey,’ Steyn said. ‘I want to be the guy who steers the Boks into the play-offs, and then makes the big plays in the semi-final and final. I want to be the guy who takes South Africa to glory.’

Last year, Steyn was dropped from the Boks' match-day squad. Meyer wanted to explore Handré Pollard and Pat Lambie as flyhalf options, and both of these players had a big impact in the final two matches of the 2014 Rugby Championship against Australia and New Zealand.

However, the performances of both players on the subsequent tour Europe were less emphatic. Pollard struggled in a rain-affected match in Dublin, and was relegated to the bench for the Boks' remaining tour matches. Lambie was accurate and decisive in the big win against England at Twickenham, but battled to assert himself in the Tests against Italy and Wales.

The Boks have three excellent flyhalf options in Pollard, Lambie, and Steyn, and all three should be part of the 31-man squad that travels to the World Cup. What is less clear at this point is the pecking order.

Form will have some bearing on selection. The five internationals leading up to the World Cup should reveal who deserves to wear that No 10 jersey at the global tournament.

Pollard blew hot and cold in a largely disappointing Vodacom Super Rugby campaign for the Bulls. Lambie missed much of the 2015 tournament due to a neck injury.

In April, an injury to Stade Français' first-choice flyhalf Jules Pilsson presented Steyn with an opportunity. Steyn built some confidence and form, and in doing so made a statement.

His game management and goal-kicking have already proved invaluable in one northern hemisphere tournament this year. The Boks could certainly do with that skill-set at the World Cup in a couple of months' time.

In a sense, all three have a point to prove over the next two months. Steyn will aim to show Meyer that he can be counted on to make the big plays. Pollard will continue to offer more attacking options than any other flyhalf in South Africa, but has to be more consistent in terms of his game management and kicking. For Lambie, the priority will be game time and the chance to prove to Meyer that the recent neck injury has not affected his confidence.

It looks like Morne is going to be starting for the Boks in the 4nations- with Pollard on the bench.
I am not a big fan of Morne Steyn but he is the best kicker we have- at poles and also territory.
If it is wet weather he is an option- but only wet weather.
He has done well to win the French Cup, especially given only recently he was 2nd or 3rd choice.
However with Autumn weather in the UK and football pitches the grounds may suit a running game of Pollard.

If Morne Steyn is saying this in public - he must have chatted to Meyer allready.
I suspect that Morne Steyn will be on the bench if he does not start.

Meyers Rankings-1. Morne Steyn2. Lambie3. Pollard4. Jantjies-

Morne should first aim to eb the Stade Francais starting flyhalf when Plisson is available before aspiring to be a Springbok.   The horror performances last year should also be forgotten by the public before making a come-back.
The performances against the Welsh in June last year was bad enough, but -
*   when coming from the bench a kick of his was charged down in the home Argentine test and De Allende barely managed to save a try by Bosch;
*   the wild kick in the closing minutes away test against Argentina directly into touch putting the Springboks under extreme pressure in a tight match; and
*   failure to find touch with a penalty line kick in the Perth test that caused the Springboks a loss against the Wallabies in Perth.
"Last year, Steyn was dropped from the Boks' match-day squad. Meyer wanted to explore Handré Pollard and Pat Lambie as flyhalf options, and both of these players had a big impact in the final two matches of the 2014 Rugby Championship against Australia and New Zealand."
The above is nonsense - like in 2012 Morne was dropped last year because of atrocious performance - nothing else.    If Morne is in fact an international flyhalf is a serious question.  He is robotic with no decision ability  and his kicking out of hand is wildly erratic and inaccurate - his defense is a joke in bad taste missing in the Perth test and his last few games more than  50% of attempted tackles.   His only rel asset has always been his accuracy in kicking at goal and that is not enough to make him even a half-decent flyhalf.
With him in the squad  like in 2011 we can never hope to get past the quarter-final stage. of the RWC.

As you know I am not a Jantjies fan and thinks he folds badly under pressure.   I think that under the circumstances Morne may be our third option flyhalf - but his recent history indicates that he folds under pressure as well and  I really have no confidence in his abilities,   His selection is not really an answer to anything, but he may for the time being be a dubious answer to the flyhalf situation as a reserve flyhalf only used as a last resort option.

With Morne in the starting line-up of the Springboks or even on the bench - I think we will be doomed early in the WC.   Morne is erratic - but mostly poor.   The day he becomes the staring flyhalf of Stade Francais on a regular basis ahead of Plisson, I may change my mind - till then he remains the bench flyhalf of his club.   A club bench player good enough to be a Springbok in a critical position - definitely not.

Ok Mike

I am not in the habit of writing players off before they take to the main stage

Let's see how he does

A bit of support would go a long way, instead of all the negativity

Morne is one of the worst Bok 10's we have ever had......utterly devoid of rugby talent other than being able to hoof the crap out of the ball. Has no attacking skills and is a liability in defence.

I sincerely mean it when I say that Pollard, Jantjies, Lambie, Goosen, Catrakillis, Coleman and Swiel are all far better options.

Morne would not make my Bok squad of 150 players.

But Meyer is such a fucking useless coach that no doubt he will have him starting for the Boks

More attacking talent in his little finger than Morne had in his whole body.......you have to be one sad conservative rugby follower to find any favour in a useless plodder like Morne.......it has to be a toss up between Morne, Koen and Braam v/Straaten as the worst Bok 10's since readmission

It would not be a toss-up.   Morne was the worst Bok flyhalf since re-admission, since he showed no flair and his attacking of the gain line borders on the non-existent - the only flyhalf boo-ed by the spectators because of rank incompetence.  He would be followed by Braam van Straaten and Koen third in the race between incompetents.
The three have one thing in common - an inability to read games and take decisions,  ie they have no ball sense.

Well Morne is certainly a kicking flyhalf, but also a fine long passer and crisp handler. Not a runner though.
Still I think most sane commentators would take Morne, a proven winner, over your two best picks of this time last year,  Swiel and Goosen. talk about egg city.

Morne a crisp handler - what a farce.  Morne standing so deep in the pocket he might be in the car park - has never been a crisp handler.  It takes too long for him to decide on anything to make him a crisp handler.   By the time he passes the ball the recipient is surrounded by defenders - who ignore Morne and go for the unlucky recipient of the ball.
A Long passer - very few of those in five years - maybe on average one every year in evidence.   His defense is sh!t poor as well.
The main problem with Morne is that he is robotic - and utterly predictable.   If he is told before the game he must pass balls - he cannot decide on his own that it may not be wise to pass - rather to make a relieving kick.
Other than kicking at goal Morne's performance is problematic  - his out of hand kicking is in the main aimless and inaccurate.    Opposing teams and their coaches know exactly what to expect from Morne and they take counter-measures with ease, making him a non-factor in rugby games.

Lambie had one kick last year, was very average to poor in every game. Nothing was excellent. We are still waiting for that big game.
If you want a reminder of how poor Lambie was against England, here it is again:

For someone that who is supposedly devoid of attacking ability, and for not being an innate runner, Morné sure has more successful individual attacking moments than both Lambie and Goosen and Swiel put together... literally. Just his tests alone outdoes everything these three have done combined at all levels of the game! And then to boot, there has never been a successful attacking backline with Lambie. None. Even the high attacking 2013 Boks scoring tries for fun, their play stuttered every time Lambie came on. Every single time. Even with a back injury Morné lead the side wonderfully against Wales in 2013, but the instant Lambie came on the test fell apart and we nearly lost the game.

Morne - the complete failure at flyhalf - who managed to lose more matches than any other flyhalf since re-admission gets his normal praise song from Desert Disaster.   The mediocre one is obviously Morne.
The following definitely does not apply to Morne Steyn - the most hopeless defender in the no 10 position:-
"you need to play anything more direct and target the inner channels - which is what happens at test level."

Lose more matches than any other flyhalf since readmission? Name them. You are deluded at best, horrendously prejudiced at worst. So much so that you actually thought you could rearrange past tests and concoct an entirely new history. Boy was that a laugh when the video came out! So we have it, the record breaking Morné is the worst defender and attacker in the history of test rugby. Has there ever been a more ridiculous statement?

It is no use discussing Morne with you - he remains too poor to elaborate in any event. Take an example of tests Morne lost or tried desperately to lose and despite him the Springboks won or drew:-
Port Elizabeth  -  England : Draw (Morne got rightly boo-ed)
Argentina       -   DrawDunedinEllis Park 2013Argentina      -   Managed to win despite MorneArgentina      -   Managed to win despite MornePerth
Morne is a disaster waiting to happen in any test he played in.

Morras had a bad patch, but has done enough to be in contention for the RWC larger squad, and depending on how he goes in the tests prior to the WC, he might even get a starting berth. Pat has been out for too long just to walk back into the starting 23.

Mance, if you want to back Lambie, that is certainly your right to do so. You don't need to justify it. But when you start calling people a stupid effing doos, insulting their family and the like you are inevitably going to bring a certain level of scrutiny upon yourself. That's the road Michael took, and I am bringing the facts so this fool and deceitful liar won't lead others astray with faulty information. He has a very strong, compulsive tendency to fabricate events entirely if he thinks he can get away with it. He is reckless enough to make me wonder if he is sociopathic. So no, I am not going to critique your opinion.

How could Morné have lost the Dunedin test if scores were equal when he was subbed for Goosen?
We lost that first Aussies test of 2012 because our front row kept getting penalized. We had no platform up front, and that was a problem throughout the first few games under Meyer, a completely revamped pack!
As per the Ellis Park test? I have visited and revisited that test so many times. It is done, you were flat out wrong. Move on.
The two Argie games last year? Well, the first was in horrendous rain, and in the second Morné created the winning try!
