Welsh referee Nigel Owens has been given the marquee quarterfinal assignment between New Zealand and France in the Rugby World Cup.

Owens whistled three matches in the pool stage, including France's 24-9 loss to Ireland last Sunday that dropped the Tricolors into a quarterfinal with the defending champion on Saturday in Cardiff.

Wayne Barnes of England will control the first quarterfinal on Saturday between South Africa and Wales.

Jerome Garces of France, who officiated in major pool games South Africa vs. Japan, England vs. Wales, and Ireland vs. Italy, has the Ireland-Argentina quarterfinal on Sunday.

That's followed by Australia vs. Scotland, which will be whistled by Craig Joubert of South Africa, who sin-binned two Wallabies and a Welshman in their match last Saturday.

The match officials:

Saturday:
South Africa vs. Wales, Twickenham:
Referee: Wayne Barnes (England). Assistants: George Clancy (Ireland), JP Doyle (England). TMO: Graham Hughes (England).

New Zealand vs. France, Millennium Stadium:
Referee: Nigel Owens (Wales). Assistants: Jaco Peyper (South Africa), John Lacey (Ireland). TMO: Shaun Veldsman (South Africa).

Sunday:
Ireland vs. Argentina, Millennium Stadium: Referee: Jerome Garces (France). Assistants: Romain Poite (France), Chris Pollock (New Zealand). TMO: George Ayoub (Australia).

Australia vs. Scotland, Twickenham:
Referee: Craig Joubert (South Africa). Assistants: Glen Jackson (New Zealand), Pascal Gauzere (France).

TMO: Ben Skeen (New Zealand).

Nigel me ol' mate, great to have you as our ref as we have an "understanding".
Boks get Barnsey, that shouldn't be a problem, right

Barnes is a good ref. Abs had him againgst Argentina, and they got through that unscaved haha. All this hysteria over 8 years ago is obsurd. NZ has since dominated France, and beat them twice at the last wc. It is just pure coincidence, that its at Cardif and Barnes is reffing , in reality the Abs are far more prepared, and experienced.

It would be interesting to see whether McCaw plays on Saturday - Owens will not put up with his tricks like tripping a player.
Enjoyed Owens' comments to Hogg in the Scotland - SA game after Hogg took a dive in the game:-
"if you try that again you will be gone and can come back in fourteen days time."
The next soccer game at the stadium would be 14 days after that game.

...not so clever mike even more interesting is having a yarpy ref the Scotland game with all those SA players in their team...hardly a neutral ref anymore than Peyper was in the last Scotland game - those 20 penalties he awarded benefiting Scotland won them the game ...very suspect mate...do the Aussies stand a chance..??? hope not..

 Brycy
The Aussies has by some distance the easiest quarterfinal game of all the quarters and they should in with ease,   Not so easy thereafter.

It depends entirely which teams are in the finals - no campaign would help in any event.
If both SA and the AB's go through they may end up with Barnes as the ref in the semis.
Won't be lucky for the AB's and get Poite again.  The choice would be between Barnes and Garces for that match-up.

I'm worried that the mini Hitler Peyper is on the sideline for the ABs game. Can just see him stepping in and recommending a "red" for a key AB player to keep him out of the potential semi-final! Paranoia has set in already. Boks will have to be on best behaviour otherwise whistle happy Barnes will march them!Off to Cardiff Friday to get ensconced in bar at 4pm for Bok game and then to Millennium for ABs vs Nemesis IV. Can't wait!!!

Boks beware, if you do manage to get the ball to the backs Barnsey will be particularly tough on forward passes. Apparently he messed up badly in a game in the past & is out to rectify public perception.
Barnsey's new glasses

Is that a wee "barking do g" happily yapping? Wee Beeno is thinking of Fitzie's ear again & is oblivious
